After running a query you will see a 'Filter' link to the right of the search results, underneath the sort by Date/Relevance link. Clicking on the Filter link will give you a break down of the categories available within your search results. To view the results for any one of those categories click on the hyperlink of that category. Alternatively, to view combined results, select the check boxes of the categories that you wish to view and then click on the Filter button at the bottom right of the list. Filtering results will also automatically create an RSS feed for your filtered search, which you can subscribe to via your favourite feed aggregator, or via the free online MedWorm aggregator. The link provided here demonstrates a search on aids/hiv across all data sources, including blogs. Click on the Filter option to the top right of the results to try out the new functionality.

Medical Blogs Now Available by Category

It is now possible to view and get rss feeds for medical blogs by category on MedWorm. Blogs include those from both physicians and patients. Patient blogs have been categorised by their medical conditions or illnesses, which are the first listed categories; new categories related to particular conditions will be added over the coming weeks. Blogs by medical professionals are found mostly under the categories related to career titles, ie. Anesthetists; Family Physicians; Surgeons; etc., which follow the patient conditions categories, but some have been placed in the patient conditions categories, where say a physician is focusing on a particular medical condition in their blog. The blog categories cover a wide scope, since for example a surgeon may not always blog about surgical matters. If anyone feels that their blog should be placed in a different category, please use the MedWorm Contact Us form on the website to let us know so, that we can re-categorise it. Should you like to submit a medically related blog for MedWorm inclusion, please create a free MedWorm account to get access to the feed submission form. Apologies for the requirement to create an account - this step is to help combat spam - you only need to provide a user name, password and email address, which only takes a minute, and you can easily delete your account afterwards should you prefer.

It is now possible to search MedWorm and create RSS feeds by data type. All MedWorm data sources have been given one of the following types: news, consumer, journals, organizations, info(medical websites that do not fall into any of the other categories), blogs. You can search within any combination of these types by selecting or deselecting the check boxes alongside to the search button. By default, all types are selected apart from the Blogs category. Alternatively, should you wish to search within just one of the data types, after entering your search text in the search box, click on the hyperlink of your chosen category.

A new 'Speciality' link has been added below each item returned when searching MedWorm, or browsing its categories, to let you know from which of MedWorm's specialities each feed item belongs. The only place where this link has not been implemented is in the Specialities category itself, since such information would be redundant there.

MedWorm Tip for Getting the Best RSS Feeds

Many MedWorm users are now taking advantage of being able to create their own RSS feeds from their MedWorm searches. However, we have noticed that more than half of the feeds created could be improved upon since many searches include spelling mistakes, redundant words, or do not include all variations of words. Before generating your own feed, first have a look at MedWorm's pre-generated feeds that have been created for the following categories: Medical Specialities, Conditions, Therapies, Cancers and Vaccinations, which have been optimised using more advanced queries with boolean operators, for the best results. You can browse all the categories via the MedWorm menu. If you do not find the subject that you would like, you can complete the category suggestion form at the bottom of each category page, and we will create the new category for you if we think it would be of use to other MedWorm users.

MedWorm Starts to Include Medical Blogs

Additional blog functionality that has recently been implemented on LibWorm.com is now been rolled out to MedWorm.com. This will include the addition of medical blogs, which will be categorised, with each category having its own outgoing RSS feed, and the implementation of tag clouds. The first step now taking place is that medical blogs are being added to MedWorm data sources. You will not see any of the blog items in the outgoing Medical Specialities RSS feeds, but will start to see them filtering through to all other feeds: Medical Conditions, Cancers, Therapies, Infectious Diseases and Vaccinations, in addition to the user created feeds, where the search terms are met. There will shortly be the option to exclude the blogs from your feeds, as some people would prefer to receive only officially published items. However, please be assured that all medical blogs added to MedWorm are manually verified to help ensure that they come from only medical professionals, and that all blogs, whilst they will contain some general chat, do also include medically relevant information. It is now becoming widely accepted that medical blogs are playing an important contribution to advances in medical communications, hence the decision to add medical blogs to the database. If you would like to submit a medical blog for MedWorm inclusion, please first register on MedWorm, which just requires your email address, username and password, which will then give you access to the feed submission form. This step is necessary to help avoid spam and if you do not wish to keep your account afterwards, you may easily delete it should you prefer.
