Moving day
discuss this article
Today I beg your indulgence, because today is packing day. I mentioned on Wednesday that Caryn and I are moving. I’ve lived in this flat for longer than I have anywhere in my adult life – nearly five years. I guess I just have feet that need to get up and move now and again. I’ve lived in three different countries, 10 states and a plurality of places within most of the states (even cities).
Caryn (my fiancée) moved into my flat last February. I must say that I have loved this apartment. It is half of the first floor of a 105+ year old house in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. The owners of the house live in the oth...

In my younger days, I would have looked at the person and perhaps thought the spiky dog collar looked somewhat cool. I may even have considered the symbolism of the collar representing the restrictions society is placing on that person.
But now. Well, now I just think it looks silly.

We like it sweet. Too sweet - and I can't help wondering how our obsession with sweetness is tied to our expanding waists.
Food mega-giant Kraft recently scored a hit in China with Oreos cookies - but not the kind that Americans eat. According to the Wall Street Journal: "Kraft learned that traditional Oreos were too sweet for Chinese tastes".
So they reformulated the flavor - and Oreos are now the No 1 cookie in China.

History lessons
discuss this article
One of my favorite coping mechanisms is to observe history. I guess it makes me feel less isolated, less alone and more connected. I find strength in the connection with our ancestors, their problems and their triumphs. There are two kinds of history. There is, of course, our own personal and family history, which is more and more revealing as DNA plays an important role in what we are learning about our health. The other kind of history is that which is recorded about the human condition in this country and throughout the world.

We are in the midst of a very exciting and important presidential election, so I thought that we could spend some time discussing what we think should be done about healthcare. Instead I hate and avoid cooking them.
There are lots of reasons for this. I don’t think I cook them very well, we often run out of necessary condiments etc, etc.

Via random phone dialing, they attempted to call 10,700 subjects to gain information about individuals with pain. They talked to 3,982 individuals and reached some interesting conclusions. Overall, they concluded that 27% of the people in the U.S. are experiencing pain.

Our new book is Dawn Baliff’s “Notes from a Minor Key.” If you recall, we already decided how we would divide this book up for easy digestion and discussion. Therefore, today we’ll discuss chapters 1-5.
The first thing that strikes me about the book is Dawn’s style and tone. This is not a tiptoe around subjects with a withering flower kind of book. This is an east coast born and br...
