You are absolutely right, you don’t work in primary care. I defer to your superior clinical knowledge, but I don’t think it’s necessary to deal with this scalp laceration. When it comes to prehospital medicine, scene safety, crowd management and the operation (including ‘fend off) of emergency vehicles? I am way better at this than you. So to that end, please step away from the crashed vehicle, stop harassing me to pick up the bloody tissues (”It’s an HAI risk…”) and before you end up crushed to radiologist coulis under the wheels of a rubbernecker’s vehicle, kindly ge...

In the debate over how to make our EMS systems and ourselves better at what we do, there is an underlying danger that’s worth mentioning. After we’ve examined the research, explored the systems and best practices, fought to advance our scope of practice, supported competence, raised minimum standards and advanced ourselves as a profession, there is an underlying danger that we should mention. There’s a pitfall that we should take care to avoid. The danger is that we may begin to do our work for the sake of the work itself, instead of for a deep and abiding respect for life. Life in general and the lives w...

Last Wednesday evening I was sitting eating dinner with the Digitals, watching DigitalLouis do his “How Much Mucus Can One Child Produce?” cabaret when DigitalKatie said to me. “If he’s like this tomorrow, he’s not going to nursery. Can we call you?” So it wasn’t with much surprise that I answered my phone to her the next morning - can I look after a snotty wee boy for the day? Does Rose Kennedy own a black dress? So Louis and I spent the day watching CBeebies, doing paperwork, learning about cocaine’s anaesthetic properties and nibbling on chocolate biscuits. The whole ...

It's getting harder for me to blog because I'm trying to not lose my sanity. You see, this blog has been a place for me to tell stories but it has also been a place for me to get angry - to shout about crappy social care, uncaring and criminal nursing homes, the misuse of our service and, indeed, the mistakes that I think the government and our own management have made. But of late I've come to realise that getting angry about things doesn't matter, not really. I can shout all I like, rant and rave, fill in paperwork and publicise things on this blog - and the net result of all that energy, strain and anger is precisely ni...

When we think of currency we tend to think of money. Some of the more intellectual or business minded in the group may also ponder time, resources and commodities as well. Anything that can be traded between humans that has value or worth is a currency. If it holds mutual value and can be offered or denied, it’s a currency. Trust is a currency. You may not have ever thought of it that way, but it is. It’s the currency that underlies all others. Take away trust and the dollar becomes worthless, our time becomes meaningless (to others) and our resources don’t matter. Power and authority are currencies as we...

As the shift came to an end tones dropped. Surprisingly, it was our unit that was called to service. Dispatch advised a vehicle had run off the road on the interstate, but the dispatcher stated that she had just come on shift and was unfamiliar if maybe this was an abandoned vehicle that had crashed the night before. We went en route, assuming that someone had consumed a few too many, wrecked, then taken off on foot. We see that a lot- if they don't get caught behind the wheel, then leaving the scene of an accident is a lesser charge than DUI. We had to go north then turn around to get to the advised location, and as we cr...

We would fight to scrape the pan and eat the melt-in-your-mouth fudge bits left after mom was done.  After it cooled, the fudge squares were dumped over a huge bowl of popcorn which four small children devoured during the annual playing of “The Wizard of Oz,” on television in the days before VCRs or streaming video. As an adult, who moved back home against all odds, my life is now more about reliving the traditions created for my siblings and I by my mother. This winter, I spent countless hours with Ben trying to remember the names of the birds which swarmed our feeders.  With my mother’s cancer treatme...

Many months ago, my blog came into question. It didn’t come into question because of something I wrote, or someone I offended. It was, however, under scrutiny by the powers-that-be. That process, quite frankly, took the wind out of my writing sails. From day one, my writing centered around how much I loved my job, where I worked and the people I work with. It was difficult feeling as thought I needed to defend myself, my writing, and in some ways, who I am. I am thrilled that after the recent publication of the social media policy, I can now say that I work for Aero Med in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I have, as you will ...

Some of you who are familiar with wildland firefighting are already well versed in the safety acronym L.C.E.S. It was developed in 1981 and continues to be taught in wildland firefighting curriculum as a handy checklist of things we should have in place when operating in dangerous environments where conditions can change fast. L.C.E.S. came about when retired U.S. Forest Service Superintendent Paul Gleason looked at fatal fires over the previous 20 years and identified the four elements most likely to save your butt when stuff goes really wrong. The acronym he created is simple and it works. In wildland firefighting change...

The Happy Medic (THM) recently posted a fantastic topic on his blog. I love diving into controversial decisions that we have to make every shift. Here’s one of those questions that we need to answer on just about every call. Should we walk the patient to the pram or carry them? This is one of those things that we have no choice but to address in every system on just about every call. How to we get the patient to the pram? When is it OK to walk them? It seems like this subject got rolling on Justin’s (THM) blog when EMS types from around the country started sending him feedback about his role in the documentary...

Not this coming summer, anyway… Rockingham Park is not going to have any live harness racing for the 2010 summer season. I’m sad about that. This would have been my eighth season working on the EMS crew there. And there are a lot of people I will miss. The reason is because the NH Legislature voted not to fund regulation or enforcement of live racing in the 2009 session. And for Rockingham Park to pay for it would cost in excess of $500,000.00. Who can afford that? So – approximately 100 people – including myself – will be out of jobs this summer. And it’s not even that I really need the work; I don’t. There ...

The first job of the day was to 'female slipped on ice - police on scene'. 'It's not that cold', I said to my crewmate - although years of working in all weathers mean that I'm perhaps not best placed to judge, 'I bet she's found the one tiny patch of ice in Newham and fell on that'. It's the end of the financial year, and so there are roadworks and temporary traffic lights everywhere, unbeknownst to us there was also a 'fun run' in the area - no-one had told us road staff about it. On the day he was assassinated he was celebrating Mass and he was reportedly shot to death during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. His blood was said to have spilled on the altar. Pope John Paul II named Romero a “Servant of God” in 1997. This is the first step on the road to sainthood. For him to be beatified and later canonized, he would have to be declared a martyr and hero. The investigation into these issues continues to this day. Should he be declared either a martyr...

If it seems strange that a firefighter would create a blog called The EMT Spot, consider that the fire service employs more EMTs than any other agency or industry. (Including private ambulance service.) I didn’t begin my career as a firefighter but I’ll certainly end my career as one. I think I always knew that was the case. I’m a firefighter for a lot of good reasons. I’m a firefighter because I believe in the honor, the history and the tradition of the American Fire Service. I’m a firefi...

The sun is shining and a woman in Greece just fixed all my iPhone worries. Have me, O and N, kicking it happy-style. (Source: Trauma Queen)

As I am a complete nerd, I have email alerts set up for various topics spoken about in government. Often I don't have the chance to read them but, being stuck alone on station last night, I had the time and the good luck to read on such discussion. This was a discussion about encouraging people to 'self care' their minor ailments. There was no mention of ambulances, the discussion centred mostly on the role that Pharmacists, GPs and Practice Nurses have to play. After all the government has no idea what us ambulance people do - I'm sure they think we only go to car crashes, heart attacks and the sort of thing you see on 'C...

(Slept too late - so no time to blog for both Paper Not Included and here - so here is what I've written over there) Publishers are missing the two important things that they should have for every ebook release. Ease of access and wide access. ][][][][ Ease of Access Why do I use iTunes to download my music instead of torrent sites? Why do I pay for albums instead of typing "band name + torrent" into Google? First - because it is wrong and illegal, but secondly and perhaps, for many people, more importantly it's because iTunes is easy. I can buy an album with one click - I don't have to worry about it being in an odd...

Sixteen years old, just round the corner from these clowns a month ago. I shivered when the name of the district came up on my screen - working alone in a Rapid Response Unit I’m supposed to think a little harder before storming into less desirable areas. No mate behind you to watch your back or second set of six senses letting you know that things have turned south. I park up at a six-in-a-block, this corner of the estate small and clear enough for my back-up crew to see the vehicle from the passing road, no need to leave the roof lights and red strobes to guide them in. From the boot I swing the response bag over my...
