Screening for illness is based on a simple concept: catch the disease early and more timely treatment will (inevitably) lead to better outcomes. And sometimes tests can detect things that [...] (Source: Dr John Biffa's Blog)

 Q. I was told that adding protein powder to hot beverages can deactivate the protein. Then I read something about adding it to hot oatmeal. What's the deal? A.  Let me start with the quick and dirty answer:  Simply stirring a protein powder into a hot beverage or bowl of oatmeal doesn't involve enough heat to substantially affect the protein configuration. And even if it did, it wouldn't have a significant effect on the nutritional value. If you're interested in the biochemistry, here are some more of the technical details:Nutritionally speaking, there's no such thing as a "...

If there is anything I regret not doing for my daughter when she was young, it's not investing the money needed to have a couple of her wayward teeth aligned. We are among many who have been affected by the flooding in the Northeast, many areas are still flooded here in New Jersey, not to mention power outages and trees down, sometimes on top of cars and homes. I've included a picture, it is dark and a small photo, so hard to make out, but the property drops off to the house, and the area up against the house had about 10-12" of water up against it several times that night...amazingly with lots of ingenuity, kept almost all of it outside.  ...

It’s a chance to show them how eating well with their kids can be fun and help build life long habits. If there is only one piece of advice I have for all parents, it’s easy: serve fruits and vegetables often. So much of our food preferences are formed right at home. Kids learn to enjoy the tastes and flavors of a variety of foods when parents put them on the plate. It might take time to find out what your kids like and certain fruits...

It turns out that humans have a taste receptor for fat--similar to the sensors that detect sweet, sour, salty, and bitter tastes.  According to a new published study, this sensor responds to the presence of fatty acids in foods. I'm guessing that this is what we sense when a food tastes "rich." However, people's sensitivity to this taste varies. A dish may be palatable to one taster but "too rich" for another.  Not surprisingly, people who are more sensitive to fats tend to eat fewer fatty foods and to weigh less.  Although the study did not address this, researchers wonder w...

Q. I am on high blood pressure meds and have noticed a lot of cramping in my legs. How much potassium in mgs should I be taking a day? A. The Institute of Medicine established 4.7 grams (4700 mg) of potassium as the adequate intake (AI) for most healthy people.   The average American gets between 2300 mg (women) and 3100 mg (men) from their diet. However, I wouldn't recommend that you start taking potassium supplements. First of all, the general recommendation may or may not be appropriate for you.
