Risk factors for lymph node metastasis in superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1810-1814. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1810.ABSTRACTIn this editorial, we comment on the article by Wang et al published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology in 2023. We focused on identifying risk factors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC) patients and how to construct a simple and reliable clinical prediction model to assess the risk of LNM in SESCC patients, thereby helping to guide the selection of an appropriate treatment plan. The current standard treatment for SESCC is radical esophagectomy with lymph...

Molecular insights into clinical trials for immune checkpoint inhibitors in colorectal cancer: Unravelling challenges and future directions
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1815-1835. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1815.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) is a complex disease with diverse etiologies and clinical outcomes. Despite considerable progress in development of CRC therapeutics, challenges remain regarding the diagnosis and management of advanced stage metastatic CRC (mCRC). In particular, the five-year survival rate is very low since mCRC is currently rarely curable. Over the past decade, cancer treatment has significantly improved with the introduction of cancer immunotherapies, specifically immune checkpoint inhibitors. Therapies aimed at blocking imm...

Growth differentiation factor-15 serum concentrations reflect disease severity and anemia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
CONCLUSION: For the first time, we demonstrated that serum concentrations of GDF-15 are elevated in patients with IBD in comparison to healthy controls, and the results imply that GDF-15 might be involved in IBD pathophysiology. Yet, it remains elusive whether GDF-15 could serve as a prognostic indicator in these patients.PMID:38659482 | PMC:PMC11036493 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1899 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Inhibition of hepatitis B virus < em > via < /em > selective apoptosis modulation by Chinese patent medicine Liuweiwuling Tablet
CONCLUSION: Preliminary results suggest that LWWL exerts a potent inhibitory effect on wild-type and drug-resistant HBV, potentially involving selective regulation of apoptosis. These findings offer novel insights into the anti-HBV activities of LWWL and present a novel mechanism for the development of anti-HBV medications.PMID:38659485 | PMC:PMC11036500 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1911 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Cellular strategies to induce immune tolerance after liver transplantation: Clinical perspectives
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1791-1800. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1791.ABSTRACTLiver transplantation (LT) has become the most efficient treatment for pediatric and adult end-stage liver disease and the survival time after transplantation is becoming longer due to the development of surgical techniques and perioperative management. However, long-term side-effects of immunosuppressants, like infection, metabolic disorders and malignant tumor are gaining more attention. Immune tolerance is the status in which LT recipients no longer need to take any immunosuppressants, but the liver function and intrahepatic histol...

Hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumors: The importance of preoperative diagnosis
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1926-1933. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1926.ABSTRACTAccurate preoperative diagnosis is highly important for the treatment of perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) because PEComas are mainly benign tumors and may not require surgical intervention. By analyzing the causes, properties and clinical manifestations of PEComas, we summarize the challenges and solutions in the diagnosis of PEComas.PMID:38659487 | PMC:PMC11036502 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1926 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Real-world efficacy and safety of tofacitinib treatment in Asian patients with ulcerative colitis
CONCLUSION: TOF was more effective in UC patients with mild activity at baseline and its efficacy was not affected by previous treatment with anti-TNF-α agents. Most relapsed patients responded again after re-increase of TOF and nearly half relapsed after tapering off TOF. Special attention is needed for tapering and HZ.PMID:38659488 | PMC:PMC11036499 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1871 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)

Recent clinical trials and optical control as a potential strategy to develop microtubule-targeting drugs in colorectal cancer management
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1780-1790. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1780.ABSTRACTColorectal cancer (CRC) has remained the second and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide and in the United States, respectively. Although significant improvement in overall survival has been achieved, death in adult populations under the age of 55 appears to have increased in the past decades. Although new classes of therapeutic strategies such as immunotherapy have emerged, their application is very limited in CRC so far. Microtubule (MT) inhibitors such as taxanes, are not generally successful in CRC. There may ...

CONCLUSION: This exploratory study conducted in a real-life setting revealed high adherence to the GFD. The AN-PEP treatment did not significantly reduce the overall GIP stool concentration. Routine utilization of machine perfusion in liver transplantation: Ready for prime time?
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Mar 21;30(11):1488-1493. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i11.1488.ABSTRACTThe last decade has been notable for increasing high-quality research and dramatic improvement in outcomes with dynamic liver preservation. Robust evidence from numerous randomized controlled trials has been pooled by meta-analyses, providing the highest available evidence on the protective effect of machine perfusion (MP) over static cold storage in liver transplantation (LT). Based on a protective effect with less complications and improved graft survival, the field has seen a paradigm shift in organ preservation. This editorial fo...

Efficacy of radiofrequency ablation combined with sorafenib for treating liver cancer complicated with portal hypertension and prognostic factors
CONCLUSION: Patients suffering from liver cancer complicated by portal hypertension benefit from the combination of RFA and sorafenib therapy because it effectively restores liver function and increases survival rates. The prognosis of patients suffering from liver cancer complicated by portal hypertension is strongly associated with factors such as high Child-Pugh grade, tumor size (6-10 cm), history of hepatitis, lack of sorafenib use, liver cancer at stage IIIC, and prior splenectomy.PMID:38617449 | PMC:PMC11008421 | DOI:10.3748/wjg.v30.i11.1533 (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterology : WJG)
