Fragility Fractures: Preoperative assessment and optimisation
Z Gerontol Geriatr. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1007/s00391-024-02299-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFragility fractures are associated with high morbidity and mortality. An interdisciplinary collaboration and an individualized, patient-centered approach are essential to ensure an optimized preoperative period and to improve perioperative safety. Preoperative responsibilities of trauma surgery include in the first step the identification of fragility fractures and the necessity for geriatric involvement. Orthogeriatric co-management (OCM) focuses on the identification of the medical, functional and social needs of the patient. ...

Sustainable age(ing) in the context of climate change: state of research and conceptional considerations
DISCUSSION: Climate change can only be dealt with together. Research on age and ageing can support this on the basis of the model of sustainable age(ing) by providing important contributions to handling climate change and (re)actions regarding environmental crises.PMID:38664241 | DOI:10.1007/s00391-024-02302-7 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Gerontologie und Geriatrie)

Suicide prevention in old age : Importance of depressive disorders and implications for the discussion on assisted suicide
This article gives an overview of possibilities for suicide prevention in old age, with an emphasis on depression. A broad range of approaches are available, which are described differentiated into universal, selective and indicated strategies. In Germany the working group "Old people" of the National Suicide Prevention Program (NaSPro) has worked out these strategies in a differentiated way and with respect to the international discussions. The influence of the debate on assisted suicide and the influence of cognitive changes on suicidal ideation in old age are discussed. A further large need for concrete measures and als...

Risk and complication profiles of orthogeriatric patients in elective hip and knee joint replacement
CONCLUSION: Due to the high risk and complication profiles the routine use of orthogeriatric co-management models for elective orthopedic surgery should be considered in the future.PMID:38639823 | DOI:10.1007/s00391-024-02295-3 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Gerontologie und Geriatrie)

Positive aging-How does it work? : Contribution of resilience to the prevention of depressive disorders in old age
CONCLUSION: Age-specific aspects of resilience can be specifically used for the prevention of depressive disorders in old age. They enable a framework to establish resource-promoting and activating interventions, to counteract the deficit perspective on ageing. At the same time, there are clear limits to individual prevention and resilience. The responsibility cannot be seen solely for each individual but above all social structures and framework conditions must enable successful implementation in old age.PMID:38634908 | DOI:10.1007/s00391-024-02296-2 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Gerontologie und Geriatrie)

Health and sociodemographic determinants of excess mortality in Spanish nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic: a  2-year prospective longitudinal study
CONCLUSION: Almost half of this sample of nursing home residents died in the 2‑year period, and one fifth were attributed to COVID-19. Functional impairment was a risk factor for overall mortality and COVID-19 mortality, independent of age and risk of sarcopenia.PMID:38625391 | DOI:10.1007/s00391-024-02294-4 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Gerontologie und Geriatrie)
