Los Angeles City Council to rush vote on medical pot law
The draft ordinance currently being urged would severely restrict the operations of medical marijuana dispensaries, which have exploded across the city in the absence of permanent regulation.
By John Hoeffel
October 20, 2009 | 10:25 p.m
With its moratorium on new medical marijuana dispensaries declared unlawful, the Los Angeles City Council is now poised to act quickly on a strict ordinance that it has struggled with fitfully for more than two years.
On Tuesday, the city attorney’s office delivered a draft that some members want the council to take up within a ...

Medical Pot Is Bringing L.A. Together
In the increasingly acrimonious pot wars, all sides agree City Hall is incompetent
By PATRICK RANGE MCDONALD AND JILL STEWART

When Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James C. Chalfant ruled on October 19 that the Los Angeles City Council’s two-year moratorium on medical-marijuana dispensaries was illegal, invalidating the ban, few legal experts seemed surprised — including City Attorney Carmen Trutanich, whose aide promptly admitted that the City Council had indeed been in the wrong.

SAN FRANCISCO — A new Obama administration policy loosening guidelines on federal prosecution of medical marijuana on Monday signaled to users that they had less to fear from federal agents but still left their suppliers to contend with a tangled mesh of state laws and regulations.
The Justice Department told federal prosecutors that targeting people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state laws was not a good use of their time.

Hi, I’m Justin Eusebio. While tuberculosis is one of the world’s oldest surviving plagues and HIV-1 infection is one of medicine’s newest challenges, there is an undeniable relationship between HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Independently, Mycobacteria tuberculosis and HIV are formidable pathogens but in concert, the prospects for controlling either epidemic are jeopardized. TB-HIV coinfection and interaction complicate all aspects of each disease: pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and even social and economic issues. Not only are individuals more likely to undergo tuberc...

I have grown to dread hospitals and the medical industry in general "and it is an industry". Medical care has become a joke in this country, even in some of the best hospitals which are under staffed, over worked, unprepared and chaotic. Insurance and drug companies, plus other bean counters dictate what, when, how and who gets treated and who gets sent away. A lot of the under staffing and overworking of hospital and clinic staff comes from mandates in hospital admin (bean counters) and from HMO's and insurance companies.Over the past 10 years I have been rushed to the ER more times than I'd like to remember. In all but o...

Ok, I lived through SARS in Toronto, and not for one minute was I worried. Meanwhile the world was freaking out, conferences were cancelled, concerts were cancelled, and the cities economy took probably a bigger hit than the recent recession. People became so stupid that it reminded me of when HIV first hit on the scene and how people lost all sense of rationality.
When H1N1 came on the scene, and personally I like to call it Pig Flu, I wasn’t too concerned. However over time my concern has risen. This was mostly due to the numbers of people being exposed to this virus compared to those who came in contact with SARS....

In 2006, then-U.S. Senator Barack Obama and his wife Michele traveled to Kenya, Obama’s father’s homeland where many of the senator’s extended family still lived. The Obamas publicly took an HIV test during their trip, an important moment as sub-Saharan Africa is the region most affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis, with more than 2/3 of the world’s infections.

This is from a blog post at the Center for Global Development about a new working paper available at CGD. Sorry it’s been so long for me to post here again, but I hope to channel a few new pieces here periodically.
Our research on the political economy of antiretrovirals (ARVs) is motivated by a key puzzle: why were AIDS activists and AIDS policy entrepreneurs successful in putting universal access to treatment on the international agenda when so many other global campaigns–whether in health care or other issue areas like climate change–have either failed or struggled to have much impact. HIV: USA - is a
collaborative effort of several HIV+ people who gave their permission
to share a very intimate part of their life. By ignoring stigma,
HIV:USA is meant to shed light on the reality of living with the virus
that causes AIDS. It is meant to give hope and inspire others to come
together in the fight against HIV/AIDS, to know one’s own status and to understand that if you are HIV positive - You are not alone. For more info, visit www.hiv-usa.com

My pan-Canadian quest to get laid has been a poor attempt, but I’ve been sort of beentrying.
For a few weeks, maybe even longer, I’ve been chatting with this one guy on line. The first time we were supposed to be in touch he was on the road sans charger, and his cell battery died.
After two hours I said to myself, “F. this, I’m heading out for dinner” Along Davie St. I wandered contemplating food, and how much I hate, no loath, eating in restaurants by myself.
This negative feeling around restaurants stems from my Kaletra days, the time of my life when I was on a mission to throw up in all the finest restaurant...

Welcome to this installment of the AIDS Pandemic, a podcast hosted by Dave Wessner of the Department of Biology at Davidson College. I am Sarah Bertram. This past summer, I traveled to Mwandi, Zambia through a Davidson biology and pre-medical program. Mwandi is a predominantly Lozi village of about 7,000 people and the catchment area totals about 25,000 people. We spent 5 weeks in Africa, 3 of which were spent working in the Mwandi Mission Hospital, the Mwandi AIDS clinic, the Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s center, and the Mother and Child Health Center. We all went with a research topic to study that was based on som...

Last night someone must have snuck into my bedroom and given me a Scatter Perm while I was asleep, as it’s been one of those days so far.
All is not lost as long as the my plane doesn’t do a crash landing. So far it’s a bit bumpy, and how knows maybe I’ll be able to use a barf bag for the first time. I knew I should have brought my Marinol with me (anti-nausea pills).
For some reason I looked at my e-ticket and read my arrival time in Vancouver and thought I was my departure time. When I printed my boarding pass just before the taxi came, I realized that I wasn’t going to make it to the gate in 15 mines.
My iPhon...

Ryan White funding extended for 30 days
Senate committee passes measure to renew HIV program for four years
By LAURA DOUGLAS-BROWN
Sep 30 2009
The U.S. Senate voted 62-38 late Wednesday to approve legislation that will extend funding to the U.S. government for 30 days after the Sept. 30 end of the current fiscal year. Included is a measure to maintain HIV/AIDS programs funded by the Ryan White CARE Act for the next month.
The U.S. House passed the measure Sept. 25. The legislation buys time for Ryan White, but does not permanently renew funding for the programs. At stake is at least $2.1 billion in funding that props up H...
