It's been several years now since rapid HIV tests entered the market with FDA approval; first OraSure, then MedMira, then Trinity and BioRad and now Inverness. Certainly the CDC has tried to educate the health care market and create rapid testing programs and opportunities. Canada's Public Health Service has been less than pathetic in promoting rapid testing, leaving it to companies like BioLytical to push for testing via NPO's. The public health response to this specific problem - that is, infectious disease transmission via drug use - has been to set up needle exchanges where users can obtain clean needles. These have been in operation for some time, but the next logical step was to provide an environment where people can inject drugs safely and also access health and addiction services [InSite ...

CASH CRISIS
The Legislature has a June 15 constitutional deadline for approving a budget, but it misses that deadline nearly every year. With reserves running low and revenue drying up, a late budget this year could mean the state pays a premium for loans it will need to pay its bills.
• State accounts continue to deteriorate as a result of housing and stock market losses.
• California’s credit rating is already among the lowest of stat...

Caterpillar Girl
discuss this article
If it weren't for the army of caterpillars outside of my door, I'd be more concerned with the Democratic Primaries today.
I'd like to devote my passion to politics, but I got my own feud to deal with. And it involves a fashion mogul and thousands of caterpillars. So great has been my concern that I didn't realize it was Cinco de Mayo until 10:30 p.m., distracted by my paralyzing fear and that I spent all day watching this video, which takes me back to the summer after 8th grade.
After my 63rd viewing of The Cure's "Caterpillar Girl", I received an email from a Kenneth Cole operative: On May 15, Kenneth is having an in-s...

Mabogo member studies carpentry
discuss this article
The Construction Industry Trust recently opened in Nata and they are training almost 100 people in carpentry, plastering, brick laying, and skilled construction. We are so proud that Mabogo member Kelebogile Koboyapula was accepted into the carpentry program. Of the 100 students, only five are women. We are so proud of Kelbogile for taking the initiative to go outside the traditional jobs offered to women. Kelebogile is a single mom and her carpentry skills will be helpful in getting a job here in Nata. Nata is a booming village and people with skills are needed to build the new lodges and stores that are popping up around...

My Grandma what an un-socialized nation you have!

I must admit that I am a Michael Moore fan. I know that he makes a lot of Americans angry. If the shoe fits may I suggest wearing it? After all is their a point in being angry about something you can’t change or you don’t find offense to because it directly affects you? Tonight my housemate and I sat together and watched the movie Sicko (made by Michael Moore). As we sat down to watch it I warned him that usually movies made by Michael Moore make me angry. Not in the violent OMG I just wanna hit something way but in the true blindness of society in regards in injustice one. In 2001 I was diagnosed with breast cancer, ...

Oversight Committee Holds Hearing Assessing the Evidence of Domestic Abstinence-Only Programs:
Chairman Waxman’s Opening Statement
We are all here today because we are concerned about the wellbeing of America’s youth. We may not see eye to eye about policy. But we share the common goal of improving adolescents’ health.
The statistics are shocking. A few weeks ago, the CDC released data showing that one in four teenage girls in the U.S. has a sexually transmitted infection. 30% of all American girls become pregnant before the age of 20; for African-American and Latina girls, the rate is 50%. And thousands of ...

HIV/AIDS in China
discuss this article
In 2006, official estimates put the number of HIV-positive individuals in China at about 650,000. This figure – reached by the World Health Organization – means that China, holding roughly 1/6th of the world’s population, contributes to only 1/60th of the cases of HIV/AIDS globally. However, it has also been estimated that if rising infection rates are not curbed, the HIV-positive population could breach 10 million by 2010. This has sparked a more liberal attitude from Party leadership toward sex education, which until a year ago, made possession of a condom adequate evidence for prostitution charges. In developed na...

I did take the bus into Harvard Square yesterday. The weather was cold, rainy adn raw so May Fair was postponed, but I did drop by the Cafe for a couple of hours, although I felt like crap, back and legs were killing me plus this droning fatigue. I hope most of it was due to the weather, but I have a lot on my mind.Whoever said that Apple's Macs are so easy even a chimp can use them never spent most of their lives on Windoze machines. So far I find the Mac very unforgiving, many sytem hagups that can only be cleared by forcing a cold reboot by holding the power button until the PC shuts down (not a clean way to escape some...

AIDS: Can the Internet Help Combat the Global Epidemic?
Apr 21, 2008 at 1:19 PM
AIDS…with its prominence in American media and culture—from Tom Hank’s Oscar-winning performance in Philadelphia to Bono’s advocacy efforts, from the Broadway smash Rent to Angels in America—I was astounded at the lack of personal and institutional/organizational blogs dedicated to the disease on the global scale. Finding a post here or there on a newspaper or publication’s blog doesn’t prove that difficult a task, but finding sites that look at AIDS’ ripple effect…its devastation — medically, emotionally, financially — i...
