I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the historical value of this fine day: Bush's last on the job as the most powerful man in the universe. (Sorry, He-Man.) I just hope we all learned our lesson on this one. And that next time we elect a "Washington outsider", we make damn sure he isn't secretly the son of a former president. (Who knew?!) And also, if we elect someone because they'd be cool to have a beer with, let's make sure they didn't swear off alcohol due to a lack of self-control. Positively Yours, Shawn PS... I voted for Obama because I'd like to shoot pool with him... does he even shoot pool???

It’s almost twenty-four hours of Buster’s poo protest. He’s not happy with the winter and he just doesn’t want to do it. The only thing I can to do is wait until he starts to shake to the core and I know he’s desperate and then get home out. I’m so excited now that my plans to see Kathy Griffin with my friend are coming to fruition. That is, after I got over the sticker shock of the lower Canadian dollar. My money exchanging headspace was still back a few months ago when it was much higher. So tack on another 90 bucks on an already expensive ticket, plus 41 dollars to get the bloody things delivered. Now tell m...

Poz magazine and NAPWA (National Association of People With AIDS) have teamed up with the American Psychological Association to make sure that mental health issues for positoids are not overlooked. There's a brief, anonymous survey here, if you are HIV positive, or a "positoid", as I say, consider filling this out. I did- it was quick and easy. This is not an aspect of our health that we think about as much as we should, and in filling out the survey I recalled an instance shortly after I'd been on HIV meds, where I felt like I was depressed, mainly because of the confusion I was feeling as a result of certain side effect...

As millions of people descend on D.C., Gwenn are I are escaping to witness a coronation of a different kind: the crowning of a new Miss America in Las Vegas! Of course, I'll be watching all the Obama highlights on television, but we can't lose sight of how important Miss America is going to be once we hit the full depths of the "deprecession." We're going to need a symbolic figure who is somewhat aloof to distract us while the administration is doing all the heavy-lifting behind the scenes. Oh, and that's a photo of Miss America 1998, Kate Shindle. My favorite of all-time. She wasn't aloof- she supported clean needle exc...

I just can’t seem to help it. I’m become compulsively playing Grace Jone’s new CD, Hurricane, over and over. She finally went back to collaborate with Sly and Robbie for that unique reggae sound infused with her strong edgy authoritarian voice. Grace put together the art of good music, pushing boundaries, and combining it with visual arts of photography and video to create controversy long before Madonna. Her covers of Demolition Man and Warm Leatherette rocked (this video is circa 1980). She interlaced androgyny, dominance and fashion into a web which produced such creativity. You may remember that back in June I wrote a blog entitled New Book "Finished". Thankfully, I had the intelligence to put the word "finished" in quotation marks. I wasn't finished- I sent the book to my agent, then wrote him back later telling him not to read it. Then I had a deadline set for November, but when I spent most of the month sick, the deadline got bumped until after Christmas because I didn't want to screw up the book by writing when I was under the weather. For some of us who didn’t figure things out after a marriage, messy divorce, and pissed off kids, in retrospect it was pretty obvious about the gay thing. Here were a few of the non-subtler clues: Even though I have no desire, but admire those who do it well (drag), my mother was quite concerned as a seven-year old always wanted to put on women’s clothes out of the dress up box. For some reason I had the faint recollection of it. For me it was we were becoming something we were, and that was a girl. Little did I know I already was. Who came from little-to-no expectations and then shocked an unexpecting world? Of course, Michael Phelps dominated sports, setting an Olympic record for most medals won. I like to think it's a pound of rock hard muscle that, for now, is invisible to the naked eye. Aside from the menage a trois love affair with the Wii Fit, I have also been working away at the second book. The deadestline is two weeks from today, just before Inauguration Day. We'll be heading out of town for a week- a vacation that doesn't involve speaking about having AIDS- so I have to finish before we depart. Oh, and here's what a friend sent me for inspiration, courtes...

She had this attitude not that she was better than us, but that she was as good as us –and that simply was not true. David Sedaris, “When You Are Engulfed In Flames” Recently I picked up David’s — ever since I saw him at Massey Hall, I feel as if we are almost on first name basis — latest book, and this line jumped right out at me. I knew there would be a post that would be perfect for this quote. I know this is really juvenile, however, this is this one guy who once spoke to me. Emphasis on once, and then ever since then it’s like he stares right through me as if I never existed. At first I took ...

Brian Finch, the South African performer Whilst cleaning out my bookmarks, I guess at some point I googled my name. In some respects it is great that I’m buried a few pages into the search. There are far more interesting Brian Finchs hanging around. One of them is a Brian Finch car dealership on London, Ontario. I must get down there as this truly will be the only way I’m going to see my name in lights. I stumbled across this one in my bookmarks that I don’t even remember seeing. Nonetheless you can imagine my horror of seeing that this Brian Finch is a country music singer! I’d take my life over th...

make & wear a white knot on inauguration day On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama will be sworn in as our next President. Rick Warren has been asked to provide the invocation. U.S. Declines to Join Resolution for Global Gay Decriminalization by Kilian Melloy EDGE Contributor Friday Dec 26, 2008 Anti-gay conservatives have delineated their opposition to the international conversation on the human rights of gays and lesbians by framing the issue as one of homosexuality in and of itself being a right. A CNS article posted on Dec. 24 referred to homosexuality as being sought as a “human right” of its own accord (rather than addressing the human rights of homosexual people) and slammed France as being the nation that has “fired the opening salvo” in what the religious-right si...
