Researchers at the University of Toronto and the University of California, San Francisco, have revealed new hope for HIV treatment with the discovery of a way to 'rescue' immune cells that are exhausted from fighting off HIV infection. In a recent episode of the television show South Park, one of the main characters is infected with HIV. In an attempt to find a cure, he must continually deal with the public opinion that AIDS is no longer a threatening condition. He is told that his disease is “a disease of the 80s and 90s” and even that he is “retro” for being infected with HIV. But has this retrovirus truly become retro to Americans? If we take South Park as a social barometer, then it seems that the disease has been marginalized in the public eye. Public interest on the Internet regarding AIDS is declining as well. A recent government blog abou...

As we all await teenage vampire drama on the big screen, some real high school drama is unfolding in Missouri, where just last month it was reported that as many as 50 students may have been exposed to HIV. HIV tests were offered to all students, and 97% of the 1,300 took the test. Here's to hoping that they pass. The New York Times reports that students will get the results this week. Thus far, one person has been confirmed as positive, and a health official there said, "We don't feel like we can release anything that would indicate who it was. We don't want witch hunts going on." Amen to that. Positively Yours, Shawn

I said I wouldn't write about writing again. I lied. Currently, I am finishing my second book, which is a vampire story. I've touched on this a little, not giving too many details, as not to spoil the book or get anyone excited before I even have a greenlight on getting it published. I can say, as I close in on another self-imposed deadline, that I am very happy with how it is going. It's my first attempt at writing fiction, and I've drawn inspiration from my own experiences as a teenager, as well as things that have clicked for me in the genre. If you want a taste of the vibe, watch "Fright Night", one of my favorite va...

Those were the words spoken to me at 7am Wednesday morning, November fifth, 2008, by a Muslim lad in Liverpool who sold me two British newspapers. He saw that I'd been crying and he asked me if I was ok. I grinned and pointed to the front-page photos of President-elect Obama. That's all I had to do. He grinned back at me - by now he had tears in his eyes too - and said, "He's given us all hope." Amen, brother. Allāhu Akbar. Amen. But I'm getting a little ahead of myself. What a difference a year makes, eh? This time last year, I was reeling from the betrayal of my long-term sero-different partner (to borrow a phrase ...

It was the first time that it clicked in my head that I could make music for myself, and not have to rely on other musicians when I had my own "machines" at my disposal. How to Protect Your Vote Groups across the country are taking steps to prevent vote problems from marring the vote next Tuesday. Every year, both sides of the aisle let fly with allegations of voter fraud, voting machine problems, and improperly purged voters. Because of technological developments, voters seeking to publicize problems and groups seeking to address them can do so quicker than ever before. Crying foul in elections is an American tradition. Instances from recent presidential elections are obvious — belief that Katherine Harris stole Florida in 2000 and Diebold stole Ohio in 2004 persist to this day — but...

Time reverts to standard time at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time. Twice a year, when Daylight Savings Time begins or ends, make it a habit to not only change your clocks, but do a few other semi-annual tasks that will improve safety in your home… Do these things every 6 months when you reset your clocks: Check and replace the batteries in your sm...

If nothing scared you last night, then this photo should. I have been remiss the last little while. I was supposed to get this up a couple days ago for Halloween. As you can see I didn’t. If you want to read the piece online it’s here, you’ll have to scroll down a bit. It was fun to write, even though we had to do the photograph when it was hellishly busy. Don’t forget to come to the HIV Stigma site. We need your participation. It doesn’t matter if you are in Ontario or not. It’s a great site and the more people contribute to it the better. Fortunately, some tweaking of chemicals has had an effect akin to being...

Children in Botswana culture start learning how to be productive and hard working citizens at an early age. The children start doing house and cattle post chores before and after school. For example, collecting water from the stand pipe to mix with sand and make mud bricks for their adobe homes. Furthermore, children follow their parents to the cattle post and help gather their animals.

From the Canadian Press: Saskatchewan investigating after hospital found to be reusing syringes. It's a terrifying article, but don't make the mistake I did when first reading this. I thought it said "Sasquatch investigating after hospital..." Come to think of it, any hospital that reuses syringes should have to answer to this guy. Positively Yours, ArrrrAAARGHAGH!

Conclusion In the world of HIV prevention, persons over the age of 50 have been called the invisible population. Few prevention campaigns have focused their messages on older adults and their concerns. Moreover, few clinical trials of drug efficacy and safety have included older persons, and persons aged 50 and older have been excluded from most sexually transmitted disease risk-reduction trials [18]. Because more persons are living longer in good health, those over the age of 50 could benefit from HIV prevention efforts.

Prop 5 would impact LGBTs [to the editor:] There’s another initiative on the ballot besides Prop 8 that would have an impact on the LGBT community - Proposition 5, the Nonviolent Offender Rehabilitation Act. It will provide drug treatment for youth, improve and expand treatment for nonviolent offenders, and offer common-sense solutions to California’s grave prison overcrowding crisis. Prop 5 will divert nonviolent offenders into treatment and other services based on their needs, such as education, vocational training, family counseling, housing assistance, and mental health treatment. These services will contin...

Court loosens Ottawa’s grip on access to medical marijuana The Canadian Press October 27, 2008 at 7:11 PM EDT TORONTO — A Federal Court of Appeal decision on Monday that upholds a lower-court ruling loosening Ottawa’s tight grip on access to medical marijuana is being reviewed, the federal government says. A three-judge panel dismissed an appeal from government lawyers who argued Ottawa’s monopoly on medical pot was the only way to provide a safe and reliable supply. The panel strenuously challenged arguments made by Justice Department lawyer Sean Gaudet that there was a lack of hard evidence to back up...

Care homes could face closure By Nicholas Timmins and John O’Doherty Published: October 30 2008 02:10 The credit crunch could force care homes [in great britain] to close unless local authorities can pay bigger fees or the government helps the sector find capital, a leading healthcare practitioner warned on Wednesday. Chai Patel, a former health adviser to the government and former chief executive of the Priory Group and Westminster Health Care, said the string of highly leveraged care home deals in recent years were likely to come unstuck as companies struggled to refinance them. “There is a chance of the social care...

Global banking reshaped This multimedia snapshot brings together coverage of the mounting crisis and its impact on the markets through links to in depth packages, interactive maps, audio, video and blogs.
