I heard the term "Freegan" for the first time tonight, and immediately pronounced myself one, falsely assuming that it meant I was a fan of Morgan Freeman. My mistake was honest. Wikipedia says, "The lifestyle (of a freegan) involves salvaging discarded, unspoiled food from supermarket dumpsters that have passed their display date but haven't passed their edible date. They salvage the food not because they are poor or homeless, but as a political statement." Apparently Oprah did an episode on this last year. It's intriguing, this freeganism. But I like my definition of the word better. Last night, I was farted on. I'll ...

I’m Bevin EnglishSince the early stages of the AIDS pandemic, doctors have known about an important neurological complication of HIV infection. This condition, known as AIDS-related dementia, AIDS dementia complex (ADC), or HIV-associated dementia (HAD), is a complex and poorly understood disease, and has the potential to greatly impact many people’s lives, including HIV-positive individuals and their families and close friends. In the United States, HIV-1 is the most common cause of dementia in adults under the age of 40. Also, neurological impairment affects roughly 60% of HIV-positive patients throughout the world. ...

Where’s Our National Campaign Against Homophobia? from CHAMP’s HHS watch By Walt Senterfitt The long-delayed release of the CDC’s new HIV incidence estimates for the United States coincided with the opening of the International AIDS Conference (IAC) in Mexico City. These two events had one striking common theme: gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) are the core of the epidemic in the US and in many other parts of the world and must be at the core of the response in order to end AIDS. The majority of new HIV infections (more than 57%) are among gay, bisexual and other MSM. [See be...

Since My Pet Virus has come out, I haven't had one big, flashy media appearance... nothing! In these troubling economic times, I sure could use any opportunity to reach the masses through the television, to not only raise awareness about HIV/AIDS but to boost book sales as well. I never intended to embrace media whoredom back in 1996 I launched my little web site. Then I was a young buck from Waynesboro, figuring that people knew everything there was to know about HIV. The main reason for this post is to let readers know about the issue. Drug counterfeiting worldwide is a HUGE problem (less so in the U.S., which still has some effective controls). Apparently this treaty deals with only one part of that problem: counterfeiting a brand name. (In order to ban, say, selling a sugar pill as an antibiotic or malaria medicine, the treaty would have to get into drug testing and regulation, which seems unlikely.) It is unimaginable that pharmaceutical co...

Last fall, a call to action signed by more than 100 HIV/AIDS organizations demanded that the presidential candidates commit to developing a comprehensive National AIDS Strategy that confronts the stigma, homophobia and violence at the heart of the epidemic. In addition to top-level coordination and accountability, we insist that people with HIV and the communities most affected by the epidemic be central decision-makers in the strategy. What have McCain and Obama said and done about the domestic AIDS crisis? What strategies have they proposed? What commitments have they made? Join us to discuss tactics to ensure that a...

Friday I finally made to to one of Canada’s finest contribution to the theatrical scene, The Evil Dead: The Musical. It was born here, then went off Broadway in New York, and I believe they had a run in Montreal as well. Unfortunately we didn’t get close to the splatter zone. It only took 7 months of procrastinating to get there for the second last show. But it as great fun, and my kind of cultural event! The rest of the weekend was a bit of a fog for me. Such as it is when I screw up the happy pills. I’m afraid my brain didn’t know if the serotonin was going or going. So much so that I had no id...

California doctors may be required to explain end-of-life rights to patients The state Senate passes a measure that calls on physicians to provide terminal patients with all options at the time of diagnosis. By Patrick McGreevy, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer August 21, 2008 SACRAMENTO — Doctors who diagnose people with terminal illnesses would be required to immediately tell them about the right to refuse or withdraw from life-sustaining treatment under a measure approved Wednesday by state lawmakers. The proposal, which divided the medical community, was narrowly approved on the same day the Legislature passed a...

Kaisernetwork | Opinion | Marginalized Populations Should Be Focus of HIV Prevention Efforts, Opinion Piece Says [Aug 28, 2008] Although the U.S. has “relatively abundant resources available to those living with HIV,” socioeconomic gaps continue to lead to higher rates of the virus among marginalized groups in the country, Christine Jolly, president of AIDS Care Service, writes in a Winston-Salem Journal opinion piece. For those who do not know what a francophile means it is not someone who fucks French guys. It means, however I love the French language, and I am willing to sleep my way to higher language proficiency. The litmus test for bilingualism in Canada is a simple one. Book a flight to Montreal, and go shopping downtown Montreal and only speak French. If you can manage this without anyone speaking Engli...

I decided to take a break from writing about politics, but fortunately two brave females have stepped up to the forefront to discuss late-breaking matters regarding Vice Presidential pick Sarah Palin. You may remember the greatest cat on Earth, pawsitoid River (living with FIV, aka "CRID"(Cat-Related Immune Deficiency)), whom I wrote lovingly about and who is still in foster care in Connecticut looking for a good home. Nudge nudge. In response to the Palin pick, My Pet Virus's feline reporter wrote this to me: "Meeeoooowww! She wants to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Way to come up with alternative...

Having gotten up early, and probably not had enough coffee, I’m attempting this post. What the hell, I can’t do any worse than I already have! Yesterday I spoke with someone from the Ministry of Health for the province. The are launching an anti-stigma campaign and have asked me to be one of their on line facilitators. This should be an interesting little job. All the facilitators will record a short video discussing whatever related to the campaign. Then we will have a profile somewhere, and then facilitate/respond to questions. It is essentially a social marketing campaign. The launch of the website and the m...

An alleged photo of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin By now, you’ve likely heard that Bristol Palin, the 17-year-old unmarried daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, is five months pregnant. Perhaps you’ve also heard that this bit of news was released to prove that Sarah Palin’s own fifth child, Trig, who is about five months old, IS actually her own child—and not that of her daughter, as some liberal blogs unofficially linked to the Obama campaign (e.g., barackoblogger.com) have hinted. The allegation was that Sarah Palin had faked her own pregnancy to cover up the fact that her te...
