Nata clinic makes sure that every child in the village is properly looked after by their parents. Every month the father or mother must visit the clinic to weigh their child. The government will give each family a food basket and baby formula if the child is in good health. Because the village is so isolated jobs are hard to find and travel is to expensive for families to support their children.

At the beginning of August, I was honored to entertain my secondish-cousin, Holly, who was in Virginia for our family reunion.
See, the six siblings of my late grandmother's family were serious about staying in touch. And Holly's grand-or-great grandmother was my grandmother's sister. I'm terrible with family trees. Anyway, each of the six siblings picked a color many years ago, and every summer the extended families get together.
Holly is a Red Shirt from Kentucky, I'm from the Navy Blue shirt clan based here in Virginia.
Holly is 17, and traveled all the way for Louisville ("Lua-vuh", as she says). I was lame and skip...

This report also demonstrates the need for more timely data about HIV transmission so that we can effectively evaluate prevention efforts. Combating HIV/AIDS also demands closing the gaps in opportunity that exist in our society so that we can strengthen our public health. We must also overcome the stigma that surrounds HIV/AIDS - a stigma that is too often tied to homophobia. We need to encourage folks to get tested and accelerate HIV/AIDS research toward an effective cure because we have a moral obligation to join together to meet this challenge, and to do so with the urgency this epidemic demands.” - Statement on ...

H.I.V. Is Spreading in New York City at Three Times the National Rate, a Study Finds
By SEWELL CHAN
August 28, 2008
The virus that causes AIDS is spreading in New York City at three times the national rate — an incidence of 72 new infections for every 100,000 people, compared with 23 per 100,000 nationally — according to a study released on Wednesday by the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
The findings, based on a new formula developed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimated that 4,762 New Yorkers contracted H.I.V. in 2006, the most precise estimate the city had ever off...

Last week God was asked for rain- and lots of it- by James Dobson and his cronies at Focus on the Family. The purpose? To rain on Barack Obama's parade.
Well, Mother Nature bitchslapped the request, and Obama gave his speech as beautiful weather surrounded him, almost in protest to the wishes. Either that or God did listen? He put the requests on a sticky note, got on a serious roll on World of Warcraft, and then scrambled to whip up the storm and get it to Mother Nature in time.
Could procrastination- one of humankind's most abundant traits- also plague the Big Guy? It could be a coincidence, but if Hurricane Gustav is...

Actually, that's Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska... see, I called it! I mentioned Alaska in my last blog. But even I can't steal McCain's thunder on this one. Is the maverick back, or did he just concede one of his biggest arguments- the one on experience?
A lot of attention has been paid to the youthful Palin and the thought of her assuming the White House should the worst case scenario occur. McCain is the oldest guy to run for the office, but I'm not worried about his mortali...

OK, so it wasn't stunning. I mean, the tune was bad. And loud. If Obama loses, it's because that song caused millions of independent voters to turn the channel.

In 2000, the United Nations created a list of 8 Millennium Development Goals to help promote economic growth and development among developing countries. One of these goals is to combat HIV/AIDS by stopping and reversing its spread and providing universal access to drugs for those infected. While this is definitely a worthwhile goal, why is it included among a list of targets to support growth? Well it turns out, that the impact of HIV/AIDS on the economy can be substantial. The first immediate effect of HIV is a drop in household productivity as the working members of the household succumb to the disease. One study by UNAID...

Uninsured pay $30 billion for health care: study
(Reporting by Maggie Fox, editing by Vicki Allen)
Mon Aug 25, 2008 8:39pm IST
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Americans who go without health insurance for any part of 2008 will spend $30 billion out of pocket for health care and they will get $56 billion worth of free care, according to a report released on Monday.
Government programs pay for about three-quarters, or roughly $43 billion, of the bills for these uninsured people, Jack Hadley of George Mason University in Virginia and a team at the Urban Institute reported.

Insurance gap leads some elderly to forgo medicine
By KEVIN FREKING
washington post / The Associated Press
Thursday, August 21, 2008; 10:00 A
WASHINGTON — Many people in Medicare with diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic conditions stop taking their medicine when faced with picking up the entire cost of their prescriptions, researchers say.
About 3.4 million older and disabled people hit a gap, known as the doughnut hole, in their Medicare drug coverage in 2007. When that happened, they had to pay the entire costs of their medicine until they spent $3,850 out of pocket. Then, insurance coverage would kic...

Justice Edwin Cameron calls for a campaign against ‘misguided criminal laws and prosecutions’
AIDSmap report
Edwin J. Bernard, Tuesday, August 26, 2008
“HIV is a virus, not a crime,” argued South African Supreme Court Justice Edwin Cameron during his impassioned call for “a campaign against criminalisation” on the final day of the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City.
Justice Cameron’s plenary presentation was the vocalisation – and culmination – of a growing movement against criminalisation of HIV exposure and transmission that has been supported – and nourished – by organisa...

The Olympics are over and I am spent from having watched. TiVo, God bless his heart, was pushed to his limits, recording up to three six-hour plus blocks of badminton, boxing and my new favorite: BMX.
The Closing Ceremonies blew the final whistle on the event. There was dancing. Flying. Fire. And Smiling. They say that the reason for the big gala is to bring all the athletes together as human beings and not competitors. Here's a photo from the jaw-dropping spectacle:
I think the closing ceremonies has more to do with warding off an alien invasion than anything else. Is it completely out there to think that could be the...

The HIV/AIDS story in India is full of strange and savage contradictions. For years, there was quibbling about the approximate number suffering from it.
Figures veered wildly between 20 million and five million until the National Family Health Survey (2005-06) confirmed a realistic estimate of between two and three million.
The patients are concentrated in certain states and districts and among high risk groups-sex w...

In this study the limiting step to increasing the numbers of people on-treatment was due to low numbers of healthcare workers. Several other presentations talked about ‘task shifting’ which is where, for example, nurses could be trained to prescribe first-line HIV treatment.

Welcome to this installment of The AIDS Pandemic, a podcast hosted by Dr. David Wessner from the Department of Biology at Davidson College. I’m Amy Jendrek. In fiscal year 2005, President Bush requested $270 million to fund abstinence-only education programs in the U.S. While Congress did not appropriate the full amount requested, they did allocate $167 million to support these programs. There are three principal programs that use federal funds to support abstinence-only education. The first of these is SPRANS, Special Programs of Regional and National Significance, which has a sub-program devoted to Community-Based Abstin...

Am about to hop a redeye back home in a few hours, but wanted to post about this afternoon's orientation talk at Cal State San Bernardino: it totally rocked!
The students were great, very attentive and, as is always the case whenever I speak without Gwenn, they were very curious about Gwenn. Near the end, after so much about this Gwenn character, one girl asked. "Where is Gwenn right now?" (I said she's busy managing a rock band, which is true.)
At the end, I got a couple of pics with my cell phone. This is only half the room- the other half didn't turn out. It was funny, just as I snapped it this whole gang of students ...
