Am about to hop a redeye back home in a few hours, but wanted to post about this afternoon's orientation talk at Cal State San Bernardino: it totally rocked! The students were great, very attentive and, as is always the case whenever I speak without Gwenn, they were very curious about Gwenn. Near the end, after so much about this Gwenn character, one girl asked. "Where is Gwenn right now?" (I said she's busy managing a rock band, which is true.) At the end, I got a couple of pics with my cell phone. This is only half the room- the other half didn't turn out. It was funny, just as I snapped it this whole gang of students ...

Yesterday’s quest was not a complete success. My mission was to get a photo taken with Stephan Dion, to go along with my other political photos, but I had not succeeded. We got there early for the reception in a state of complete starvation. This venue was out in the land of fields in the outskirts of Oakville. Outside of the centre, just beside the entrance, was a woman selling bottled water and chips at a “mom &pop” set up. This was clearly not a good sign for those overcome with peckishness. My friend and I sat down at the table where upon lay the platter of strawberries, melon balls, and other a...

“Turpentine’s a hard line! huh!” And so, with music and magic, the world premiere of “Turpentine Jake,” staged at Loyola Marymount’s Del Rey Theatre, takes off on a smart flight of legendary scope and impact, a skillfully-crafted historical drama of character and social justice that doesn’t depend on a car-chase mentality for suspense. To the contrary, the soaring use of lanuage in gem-like self-narratives, poetry and songs, accentuates the action. Set in the”debt peonage” system of the Florida Turpentine camps in 1937, the story is dramatized by the grandson of one of those workers, James E. Hu...

Knights of Columbus tip the balance with big anti-gay marriage donation 3:49 PM, August 20, 2008 It’s official — opponents of gay marriage have raised more cash in support of Proposition 8, the anti-gay marriage initiative, than gay marriage supporters, who have vowed to defeat the Nov. 4 ballot measure. A contribution by the Connecticut-based Knights of Columbus of $1.25 million on Aug. 14 put Proposition 8 supporters within striking distance of opponents. Yesterday, another infusion of cash from groups and individuals who oppose same-sex marriage put them ahead in the money race. Our own Maloy Moore is fo...

Why I Love the Olympicsemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
My last fake outrage post about the Olympics has been haunting me- especially since I've been watching the Games every night before I go to bed. How can you not cheer for that swimming dude who has inspired a nation to believe? No, not Phelps- I'm referencing the Korean swimmer, Park-Tae-hwan, who, at the age of 14, was disqualified in the 2004 games when he lost his balance and fell into the pool. He didn't even get to race! Well, he ate nothing but glass for four years and came back to win Korea's first Gold Medal in swimming this year... triumph! And what the controversy over China's female gymnastics team? Everyone i...

I probably won't be posting the weekly links to articles and videos much any more. Something inside has clicked and I have reached a tipping point where I am at total overload; about my age, HIV status, lack of success at life and making friends and position in the human social food chain.I stopped by the Conspiracy Cafe yesterday to let them know I won't be around much any more, may drop by to say hello, but not much more. I know what I know, and have come to the conclusion that over 90% of the population does not see the world as I do, know the things that I know, and has no desire to do so.What's pushed me over the edge...

Whew, I am back at home, what a trip. My last full day in Mexico City was insane. As much as I love my Rwandan friends, I never want to try to do anything with them again in a western environment. We went to the pyramids on Friday with a gang of Canadians, Norwegians, and Rwandans. In Africa, they concept of time and structure is very different, or almost non-exisitent. It takes 30 mins just to end a meeting that never starts on time. It must have taken up 30 minutes just to round everyone up and walk them over to the bus! The day, as interesting as it was, was like pulling teeth very slowly in terms of getting the tour to...

by Keith Orr and Michael Shankle This past week what we suspected was confirmed: HIV still affects our community more dramatically than originally projected. The first news came from the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, where the CDC reported a dramatic increase in reported HIV infections in the U.S. But more jolting health news hit closer to home with the governor’s and Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s (MDPH) report Inequitable Impact: The HIV/AIDS Epidemic Among Gay and Bisexual Men and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in Massachusetts (See “DPH: No decrease in HIV infection rates among g...

To escape the impending clot-fest of the Olympics, I ran off to Richmond to see a screening of Engine Down's new DVD- "From Beginning to End". Here's the trailer: Watching the documentary gave me a lot of insight into the band, whose music is still among my favorite. It also brought back a lot of memories, how I came to know their music and their bass player, Jason, the gentleman who open the trailer above with a toast to his friends. I always assume the bands of mutual friends suck, because statistics back up such an assumption. So I wasn't eager to check out this "great band" my friends, Kelly and Jeff, kept telling ...

Today marks the end of the 17th International AIDS Conference. 25,000 delegates were in Mexico City this week to discuss the current state of the pandemic. While I was not able to attend this year’s conference, I have been following the proceedings online. What were some of the major themes? The infection rate in the US is higher than previously thought. We need to do a better job reaching out to men who have sex with men. We need to develop an effective microbicide. We need to serve our children more effectively. New media – blogs, podcasts, twitter, mobile phones – may help us get the message out.Because of AIDS co...

But before you think that I am about to move to California where Pato works with AIDS Project Los Angles and get gay married to him (where gays can now get married…for now), I should say that I don’t really know him beyond having heard him speak at the ART/AIDS.WORK conference in NY and at the MSM Global Forum here in Mexico city. It is his cultural work that make...

Yes, the sound of the beat marching to over twenty thousand people, and frayed nerves as one has to constantly crisscross the grounds to get to the next event going on. It is none stop all day. However, on my way to the posters area I came across this transgendered display so I had to get a photo. What do you think? This day I choose to look at some international MSM stuff, an area I don’t have a lot of knowledge, and of course I was too sick when I got here to take in the pre-conference MSM forum. Before I came to this conference, I had a conversation with one of the editors of a local gay mag. We were talking about...

Today, POZ made the backpage of La Voz Global, the daily newspaper of the International AIDS Conference! We have a space in the Global Village where we are collecting photographs and videos of people living with, and those affected by, HIV from around the world (for those of you who are here in Mexico City at the conference...please come see us at booth #200). A very special friend of POZ, photographer Joan L. Brown, is snapping some of the most amazing photos of those visiting the conference. Every four years the greatest athletes of the world gather to compete for gold and glory. The way I see it, they are just rubbing my bleeding disorder in my face. "Hey, look at me! I can do flips and land on my feet- no knee hemorrhages!" "Look at this! I'm launching myself through the air with this sharp pole. If I land on it? No problem, that's what band-aides are for!" Ironically, the only athletes that make me think a thinblood has a chance at the Olympics are the boxers, who have to wear that ridiculous looking headgear.... OK, maybe not. Unless the cornermen are allowed to inject their boxers with clotting facto...
