‘Why few dare tackle the #psychology of #ME.’ #disability #ukmh #stigma
“Last summer I wrote a column here about ME, after researchers had revealed the systematic abuse they had received from a group of ME protesters, who objected to the scientists’ suggestion that there might be a psychological component to the condition. The scientists, including highly respected clinicians, told how they had been subject to intimidation and even death threats. I suggested that perhaps the reason the protesters felt so strongly was because of the way society views mental illness…..” Read on:  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/9559261/Why-few-dare-tackle-the-psychology-of-ME.html Filed un...

A Kentucky Fried Bento Box…
Charlie brought me last night what would best be described as a KFC bento box. Maggie went nuts at the smells. I gave Maggie a drumstick and Christmas had come early. The plate had chicken fingers on it as well and they were exceptionally good. I also love KFC’s potato wedges which were in the box. Maggie in the Middle… Charlie and my father got in a heated argument last night. It’s not uncommon. My father said that Charlie gives Maggie too much food every night. Profanity was flying loose and fast. I thought I was going to have to step in and referee. Charlie always says he fights with words and my father fights with his fists,

While You Were Sleeping...
Ok, so, I've been away for a while.  Yes, you've probably noticed that I don't post anywhere near as often as I used to, but I check in on other blogs even less often than that.  So tonight I am awake (for a change), and bored, and curious, so I clicked on a few links in my side bar.  And what do I find?  That blog land is not how I left it!  It's like returning to an abandoned memory and finding there is nothing even remotely familiar about it at all!First I find that Random Acts of Reality doesn't even exist any more, NeeNaw is off-line, and Mike hasn't posted for 2 years after finding out that a...

You’re Blessed Says the Boss Dawg…
“Maggie! You’re blessed for me walking you in this weather!” I told Maggie on the last leg of our shivering cold journey this morning. We were just rounding the corner down the street. Maggie was as happy as a clam as she trotting along beside me.  It was absolutely freezing this morning for me.  I think the temperature was 47 degrees when we left the house this morning. I had quite a few trepidations about walking this morning, but I would have a good little dog’s broken heart to contend with if I didn’t go ahead and walk.  Maggie’s feet and my shoes were soaking wet with a heavy dew when we go...

Spicy Hot Sport Peppers…
Summer asked what sport peppers are.  They are diminutive little yellow and very hot peppers similar to cayenne peppers that make for a good and spicy vinegary hot sauce. It is especially good on turnip greens, rutabagas, and collards. We’ve just always called them sport peppers around here. I am guessing that it must be a regional name.

Cannabis and Bipolar: The Medical Marijuana Question
Back in January, I posted Marijuana for Bipolar: Treatment or Self-Medication. This is a topic well worth revisiting.   In my earlier piece, I framed the topic this way:    I’m all for legalizing the drug, but this is an entirely different issue than endorsing its use for treating mania or easing stress.    This snippet from a response to a reader query accurately reflects my position four years...

The drugs don’t work: a modern medical scandal – by Dr Ben Goldacre
This study found 192 trials in total, either comparing one statin against another, or comparing a statin against a different kind of treatment. They found that industry-funded trials were 20 times more likely to give results favouring the test drug. These are frightening results, but they come from individual studies. So let’s consider systematic reviews into this area. In 2003, two were published. They took all the studies ever published that looked at whether industry funding is associated with pro-industry results, and both found that industry-funded trials were, overall, about four times more likely to report pos...

A Vignette…
My sister’s here while her husband goes to the ballgame.  Mom, dad, Mary, and her two Children were on the back deck.  The were all having wine, cheese, and crackers. “Have some crackers!” my mother said. “He just can’t have any wine,” my father said with a stern smile. That used to would have pissed pissed me off, but I am so jaded now that it doesn’t bother me.  I had a few crackers and pepper jack and before long didn’t realize I had eaten four crackers.  They were delicious.

The Grand Arterial Test…
Unranked Auburn plays #2 LSU at seven tonight.  I am sure my father and brother-in-law will be going and torturing themselves in the process as a huge loss unfolds.  I told my father last night that it will be a grand new arterial test for him.  He didn’t laugh.  That won’t daunt him though.  Sometimes I think the call of football is greater than that of crack cocaine and it will sweep all its fans into a furious drug crazed frenzy.  Maggie is Recovering… Maggie is home safe and sound from her annual veterinarian visit yesterday.  They cleaned her teeth again and she was drunk as a...

Trauma
I just listened to this very short snippet from an interview with David Nutt on BBC Radio 4's "The Life Scientific", and suddenly I couldn't stop crying. It just seemed to come from nowhere, as it often does whenever anyone mentions the word "trauma".I've never actually been allowed to talk about what happened to Mr Man in hospital and how it made me feel. Even my counsellor didn't want me to focus on that, but to talk about my mundane everyday problems, such as paying bills and getting enough "me time". Maybe that's why it is still effecting me 10 years later. No one wants to hear it. "That was all in the past", "It's time...

The Other "You" - The Bipolar Question of the Week
Continuing where I left off: Last week, I introduced to you my other persona, Funk Barkley, who leads his own World Famous International Didgeridoo Orchestra. My post was entitled, “Being Ourselves.”   Some major paradoxes are in play. There is a wild and crazy and wonderful person inside all of us, and we need to give this individual expression. What happens, instead, is we tend to place the poor guy (or gal) in five-point...

Unlimited Refills!
When my parents had much more control over my life and money, I would always about die for a Coca-Cola and going to the Waffle House was a windfall as they had free refills.  “Need some more Coke?” the waitress asked me this morning with a porcelain smile as she took my glass after I nodded yes. It brought back a flood of good memories. I can always use some more Coke!  Ah, the luxury of freely flowing cola. I tip freely when I get a waitress like the one this morning. I am certainly a creature of habit and got the ham and cheese omelet platter again.  I also got an extra order of buttered toast. I got...

(Small starting note, because I fear people took my post the wrong way - again. I reread my post from the other day and realize that it had somewhat of a whinny tone. That was not my intention. My sister and I got a long when I was younger (for the most part, all siblings argue). Nor was I trying to imply that I played no role in her not speaking to me.) I would like to remind my readers

Her Face A Cadaver-like Gray
Thursday - Entry 3: Earlier yesterday, as I settled down to turn keywords into scintillating text that would entertain not only Google but web users for generations to come, I got a call from Nana. The school had called her to let her know that the Brownie was having a seizure. For some reason Nana’s number was at the top of the schools contact list. For a moment, that concerned me more than the seizure. The Brownie has had seizures at school before. They’ve become an infrequent but routine part of life with her, but this time she had stopped breathing. Not quite a tonic-clonic, but scary nonetheless. She loses control...

Johnnie’s List of Things…
This morning is volunteer time in the lab, but this day will heap more responsibility on me as the day progresses. My father has a ton of things he needs to do like a doctor’s visit in Opelika and he also needs to go by his former pharmacy and then to the bank.  I am just going to drop him off for the doctor’s visit and have him call me when he is done. We will take care of the other errands then. “I am not riding in a car with your mother driving ever again,” my father said sternly repeating himself this morning over the phone. Whoever would have thought that my esteemed father would be dependent and relying...

Truths - Forgive & Forget
So here it is, the truth. I took a big break from writing my blog for a number of reasons, all of them true, but I didn't tell you the biggest one. My blog no longer felt like a safe place for me to write my thoughts. I started to continually worry about who of my friends or family might be reading it and who I might accidentally offend. You see back when I first started blogging I had a post

A Base of Tranquility…
Ah, the house is eerily quiet and calm. My only sound is that of being serenaded by Sarah MacLachlan at the moment.  Charlie and my father have already left after another whirlwind visit from the dynamic duo. Tonight, Charlie put up all the dishes he washed yesterday in my dishwasher. I can now envision a transition from my computer room to my bed. Going to bed doesn't necessarily mean getting off the Internet. I have an iPad remember?

Sadly, I Live Out of my Clothes Dryer…
I had just gotten my last load of laundry dry for the day when Charlie and my father arrived for their nightly visit. I had about run out of clean clothes to wear. Charlie immediately got to folding my clothes after getting Maggie some fresh food and water.  “I am going to get you some fabric softener,” Charlie told me. “There he goes again,” I said to my father with the chuckle. I had a wide eyed look on my face as I rolled my eyes in an exasperated way. . “You are probably going to have to start tipping him soon,” dad said as we both laughed. “I hear you all in there laughing and talking about me,”...

Situation Mayer…
I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know John Mayer through his music. Sometimes, I can be late to the musical ballgame as they can say. I had gotten in a rut of movie soundtracks.  My last movie soundtrack fixation was John Barry’s Dances With Wolves. Ever hear the John Dunbar theme? I started to listen to Mayer’s latest album Born and Raised and I was off on another musical tangent. Strut Yer Stuff… Maggie was very visibly relieved as she wagged hair tail wildly when I got her leash off the piano. It was time for the grand walk of the day – Maggie’s grand procession.  Let me be the first to say that ...
