Time for Lunches…
In the forestry trade in the Southeast, you will often find illegal immigrants planting the trees and doing the dirty work on these pine tree plantations that are all over the Southeast. We had this one Mexican fellow named Ernesto who would constantly ask, “lunches?” with a big bold grin, as he was always hungry. I think it was the only English word he knew. The head honchos would buy all of us lunch and it thrilled his soul. I still ask within my family, “lunches?” jesting like that fellow did all those many years ago. Ah, speaking of lunch, the mystery meat express has arrived. The...

A Smorgasbord of Smells…
Maggie and I just returned from our usual and almost thwarted daily walk. We walked just over 2 miles according to my pedometer and now it is pouring rain again and thundering – a very close call. It was another chilly and extremely damp morning – wool sweater or jacket weather as my grandmother would call it. I think the British would also call this rising damp. I carried an emergency poncho in my backpack from my camping days. I tried something different this morning and took my iPod with some new and interesting music I wanted to check out. I tried to enjoy it, but I still have this nagging ...

Clear: The ADD Friendly ToDo List
Recently I have fallen in love with a ToDo list. I hope this won't be too embarrassing for you, but I have taken it out on dates. In fact, I take it everywhere with me. I even sleep with it. Now, now. I realize I can't marry it…yet…but we are truly inseparable.A good ToDo list gets out of your way and just lets you write things down. Anything that tries to improve too much beyond the pen and paper paradigm becomes a different beast entirely. That's not to say that ToDo apps with recurring ToDos and alarms and Swedish foot massage are bad. I like getting my feet rubbed, but sometimes I find the overhead on those more po...

When "Normal" People Flip Out, Not Us: The Conversation Continues
In a recent post, Ending the Stigma ... , based on your responses to a Question of the Week, we challenged the conventional wisdom that those of us with the bipolar diagnosis are more likely than those with normal to freak out when things go wrong.
What prompted my query was a question I raised in a talk I gave in April to the International Bipolar Foundation in San Diego. The audience naturally assumed that they - those living with...

Can you really believe they said this – 2012 reprise
They say hindsight is 20/20 vision.
Well, here are a bunch of quotes I’ve posted over the years for you to consider with the gift of hindsight.

Drat! Thwarted Again…
I got down on one knee a moment ago and put on Maggie’s leash while she wiggled anxiously and wildly. I always start to laugh jovially and heartily when she does this. She was really excited this morning and her exuberance was extremely contagious – excited to get out and about on the mean streets of the Valley. I opened the front door and it was raining steadily and softly. It caught me completely by surprise and dashed our hopes for a walk. You have never seen Maggie so very dejected looking in your life When I took the leash off and locked the front door. I am happy for the rain, though. Even...

What I Got Mom for Mother’s Day…
We won’t tell her it was on sale and made in a laboratory! Mom loves jewelry and collects it even though she doesn’t wear it very often. She fears she is coming across as ostentatious and vainglorious. It reminds me of a time my father bought mom a fur coat and she never wore it. Too shy. It stayed in one of those climate controlled storage places for years. She thought she would look pretentious. 1.95 cttw Original Star K(TM) Lab Created Heart Shaped Sapphire Pendant was: $199.99 $79.99 save: $120.00

Why did this mental health service user have to wait a year for physical pain relief?
Reblogged from If you can keep your head:
For the past year or so I have been largely confined to bed. I have been laid low by feelings of exhaustion and pain. My GP had given me one type of pain killer but these pills did not work so I asked for a change of pill. I could not seem to find the right words to get through to him.

Put the Cornbread Down, Now! Now Show Me Your Hands…
I have no earthly idea what our Helen is cooking today. it will be a surprise to me and I will share it on the blog around 3pm or 4pm. Food is so hard to photograph, though. It always looks like something a cat threw up. The colored butterbeans I photographed last week looked dookie brown.

Helen Fridays…
Helen outdid herself today. I’ve never had the good fortune of eating Helen’s pot roast and it was delicious and fork tender. Helen must have cooked it all morning to get it that tender. The ubiquitous potatoes, onions, and carrots were cooked to perfection as well. I didn’t eat the crowder peas, though. That’s one of the few peas I do not like. Maggie seemed to enjoy them so that food didn’t get thrown away, and yes, Maggie got some pot roast as well. The yellow side dish is summer squash and sweet Vidalia onions. Not pictured is a green salad with ranch dressing and cornbread.

Bullying and Ostracizing Tied to Depression and Anxiety in Special Needs Children
Children with special needs have always been a favorite target for bullying and teasing. It’s easy to see why - they’re different. Except for the occasional rebel, most children don’t want to be stand out from the crowd. Being different is generally not seen as a good thing. Certainly, no child wants to be different because they have special needs. In a small study presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting on...

Family double death horror
I’ve just seen this terrible story in the Daily Mirror:
A father is believed to have returned home yesterday evening to find his two young children murdered and his wife with her wrists slit.
Emergency services were called to the home in Wandsworth, south west London, but the 10-week-old baby boy and one-year-old girl were pronounced dead at the scene.
A post mortem is due to take place today although reports have suggested the children showed no signs of injury and may have been smothered.
A woman in her mid-30s, believed to be the man’s wife, was arrested over the deaths and is being questioned by detectives toda...

Sleepless in the Valley…
Maggie woke me up extremely abruptly at 2am barking her fool canine head off. My heart was racing with fear as I wiped the sleep from my eyes and sat up in the bed. Dad came at 8pm last night so I was in the bed at 9pm so I just decided to get up after five hours of sleep and spend some time on the computer. I turned on the myriad of outside house lights I have and she has calmed down somewhat. Something really got a wild hair up her arse this morning, though. She sounded absolutely vicious as if there was an imminent threat. It scares me when she does that. It could have been an errant cat or a possum, o...

When is Enough, Enough?
I'm so emotional today, I'm so unsure of myself, and I don't really know what's going on. It's not that time of the month, what do "normal" feel on a regular basis? I wish I knew. There's some history with my sister-in-law. I don't like her, she has a very unpleasant personality and I'm sure I've talked enough about her in my blog. She doesn't seem to wish her brother or us well at all, nor does she seem to wish good things for us. But she's like her brother, very passive agressive. So she sends this message in facebook to my other sister-in-law, Mark, and myself. I don't check face...

Thinking Deeply Again
The Goblin is in happy Netflix Land in the other room, and in a few moments the Leprechaun & Elf will be home. My time alone will be over. I've been rethinking how I spend my time lately and wishing I had tighter control of it. Of course, my brain's a freely spinning frisbee heading to parts unknown, but perhaps with a bit of effort I can rein it in and have more to show for my day—other than errands and work. I need to live with greater purpose. I'm not as distracted as I am unfocused at the moment. I have goals, but I have to admit that my depression and this divorce have buried much of the enthusiasm I usually have fo...

Glaxo – a simple challenge for you…
It’s been a while since I wrote anything as I’ve been very busy with my day job.
Happily, others have continued to write – I’ve just read a post over at Seroxat Suffers about Glaxo in New Zealand and the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with Aropax (Seroxat).
According to Glaxo (only in New Zealand, though):
Depression is longer lasting or more severe than the low moods that everyone has from time to time. It is thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in parts of the brain.
AROPAX corrects the chemical imbalance and so helps relieve the symptoms of depression.
Sorry, but I have to throw t...
