Pain Scales For ER and Hospital Patients Must Be Adjusted For Allergy History
Pain is the 5th vital sign. Questions about patients' perception of how well their pain was controlled in the emergency department or hospital are part of patient satisfaction surveys that determine whether hospitals get paid or not.  Some hospitals will use the AIDET method to try and get patients to  forget about how painful their ruptured appendix really was and how it took the overworked nurse 2 hours to get them their shot of morphine.  However, other hospitals have taken a new approach and have begun using modified pain scales to try and accurately predict real pain from drug seeking pain.  I...

Your Child May Get This Deadly Allergy After Being Vaccinated
Vaccines containing latex may be triggering allergic reactions to common products, like baby pacifiers. Millions of children worldwide are being injected with latex allergens over and over again in connection with vaccination schedules, often starting with the Hepatitis B vaccine when babies are only a few hours old. Is it any wonder that latex allergy affects millions and that the numbers are increasing? The presence of latex allergens in vaccines is due to leaching from syringe tip caps, plungers  and  multi-dose vial stoppers. Many suffer from latex allergy According to WebMD, In the US  1 – 5% of the population su...

Pharmalot… Pharmalittle… Good Morning
Hello, everyone, and how are you today? Once again, a shiny sun is hovering over the Pharmalot corporate campus where, surprisingly, things are rather quiet this morning. However, we have a very long to-do list that will keep us busy all day. So to fortify ourselves, yes, we are brewing that mandatory cup of stimulation. But we also plan to take a midday constitutional (otherwise known as a stroll) to recharge. Hope you get to do the same. Meanwhile, here are some tidbits to get you going. Have a successful day and do stay in touch… FDA May Take More Time To Review Pfizer’s Tofacitinib (Dow Jones) Hospira Resum...

A short letter and “patience, grasshopper” – some principles for improving health care
Please read Sanjay Gupta's excellent op-ed today as an introduction – More Treatment, More Mistakes Certainly many procedures, tests and prescriptions are based on legitimate need. But many are not. In a recent anonymous survey, orthopedic surgeons said 24 percent of the tests they ordered were medically unnecessary. This kind of treatment is a form of defensive medicine, meant less to protect the patient than to protect the doctor or hospital against potential lawsuits. Herein lies a stunning irony. Defensive medicine is rooted in the goal of avoiding mistakes. But each additional procedure or test, no matter...

Mass Tragedy Boilerplate and Rebuttal
By Jim HarperOn the road last week, and allergic to getting too heavily involved in the issue de l’heure, I only today saw Holman Jenkins’ Wall Street Journal commentary: “Can Data Mining Stop the Killing?” After the Aurora theater massacre, it might be fair to ask what kinds of things the NSA has programmed its algorithms to look for. Did it, or could it have, picked up on Mr. Holmes’s activities? And if not, what exactly are we getting for the money we spend on data mining? Other than to collect it in a great mass along with data about all of us, the NSA could not have “picked up on...

Toxic Cosmetics
Methylparaben, ethylparaben and propylparaben, oh my! After seeing what food changes (i.e., going gluten free and dairy free primarily, plus buying organic and non-GMO) could do for lupus, fibromyalgia and other ills (Foodie Alert), I started to think of my body as a chemistry project…and then I began to wonder what everyday products were doing to me. I started my research. After reading controversial findings about parabens cancer risks and parabens from a few sources, I put certain products back on the shelf and chose other options, like ones that said “paraben free.” I also began to run specific produ...

Going Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Part 1
This is still ALLC.com, but it will morph into a bit of a foodie site. Why? Because food is now medicine. One of my pain management doctors, Dr. H, bluntly told me at the start of summer 2011 that it was time to commence a full commitment to eating gluten-free and dairy-free. This news did not give me a happy face. I was immediately trying to picture what my grocery trips would entail and whether I would ever enjoy chocolate again. Prior to this moment, I had confessed to Dr. H that I realized a few things about the impact of food on my symptoms: too much dairy triggered increased joint pain, and too much gluten-y deliciou...

Giving children and adolescents with egg allergy small but increasing daily doses of egg white powder holds the possibility of developing into a way to enable some of them to eat egg-containing foods without having allergic reactions, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Vaccines: How Would You Like the Truth for a Change?
Parents often have to dig for the truth to protect their child. When I first started writing for Vactruth in February, I wondered how I would be able to continue coming up with new topics. Now I can’t believe that was ever a concern. Every time I start one article, my research leads me in another direction and another and another. Now my problem is choosing what to write about. I have literally dozens of ideas on my laptop. And by the time one article is published, there’s something else to cover. My “dilemma” of picking a topic this week led me to a topic. Spectrum of gluten-related disorders: consensus on new nomenclature and classification
A decade ago celiac disease was considered extremely rare outside Europe and, therefore, was almost completely ignored by health care professionals. In only 10 years, key milestones have moved celiac disease from obscurity into the popular spotlight worldwide. Now we are observing another interesting phenomenon that is generating great confusion among health care professionals. The number of individuals embracing a gluten-free diet (GFD) appears much higher than the projected number of celiac disease patients, fueling a global market of gluten-free products approaching $2.5 billion (US) in global sales in 2010. It's nothing to be ashamed of, and the good news is that this side effect is totally reversible. If you have any 'issues' in the bedroom, don't hesitate to call, and we'll switch you to another type of drug called an ACE inhibitor." OK, you say, you'll keep that in mind...

Breathe Deeply: A Comeback For Primatene Mist?
Six months after the FDA banned Primatene Mist, which was the only over-the-counter asthma inhaler in the US, Amphastar Pharmaceuticals is attempting an unusual gambit to bring the product back, but only temporarily. The drugmaker hopes to convince Congress to pass legislation to allow up to 1.5 million units stored in warehouses to be sold to consumers while approval is sought – and, presumably, finalized – to sell a new version without chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs. Toward that end, an Amphastar official will testify today before a House subcommittee that is considering the Asthma Inhalers Relief Act of 2012 (...

Advanced Medical History Bracelets and Methods
“Check for medical alert tags or bracelets.” Your EMT instructor probably made you repeat this phrase dozens of times through the course of your EMT class. Checking for medical alert bracelets is a staple of the EMT medical and trauma stations. It’s right up there with, “I’m wearing my BSI. Ronnie’s Story: A son’s mysterious illness
By Ronnie and Lamar Tyler. I remember when my son was first diagnosed with asthma. I was a single mom living over 600 miles away from my family and friends. He was in the 2nd or 3rd grade, and it seemed like he was always getting sick. The nurse would call me at work and say, “Please come pick up your son. He has a low grade fever and he threw up on the playground.” Of course any child who throws up at school has to go home. So, I had to leave work to pick him up (it took about 30 to 45 minutes to get to his school). When I picked him up and took him home he was fine. No fever. No symptoms of sickness. No more throwing...

I am Hard on Ankles
About 6-8 weeks ago, I sprained my right ankle. I was out walking the dog in the still-dewy grass, turned my right ankle, and fell. I’ve turned that ankle a few times in recent years, and am convinced that I have a genetic structural instability – my dad’s a big ankle turner, too. Thankfully, I kept hold of the big scary dog’s leash, and she came over and licked my face while I decided whether I could just sit in the grass until Joel woke up, figured out I was gone, and came to find me. Eventually I hauled myself inside, where I proceeded to RICE but also to wait 3 weeks before seeing a doctor and s...

WTF Moment #1007
Mom busts through the doors with her young son. “He’s having an allergic reaction. Someone help!” Everyone drops what they are doing, rushes over, and brings the child into a room. Young child looks up at all the people and gives a big grin. “I was feeding him his bottle and some of it spilled on his chest. His chest got red almost immediately and started developing little blisters.” “What was in the bottle?” “Milk.” “Is this the first time he has drank milk?” “No he drinks it all the time, but it has never spilled on his chest before.” After the...

Solids
I also forgot to mention that we got the green light to start Dylan on solids.  Almost all solids, in fact.  Apparently there was a prospective cohort study done in Finland that came out in 2010 showing that if anything *late* introduction of solids was associated with food and inhalant allergies.  Abstract here.Cool, huh? He loves listening to his country music every day.  Today we went out for a small walk around our neighborhood. This is the entrance to our apartment complex. I like taking a picture of him here because of the pretty flowers. It was really sunny (and hot!) so it made it a bit ...
