Inducing and Breaking Tolerogenic Antigen-Presenting Cell Function
Professional antigen-presenting cells (APC) such as dendritic cells (DC) and macrophages play a critical role in the initiation and maintenance of a T cell-mediated immune response. APC are essential for T cell priming, differentiation and activation in lymphoid tissue and at sites of inflammation. Understanding the molecular mechanisms via which APC function can be controlled may give novel insights into how T cell mediated immunity may be induced or blocked. This meeting will highlight current research aimed at inducing dendritic cells with tolerogenic function in order to treat inflammatory disease (e.g. rheumatoid arth...

Human evolution – plagues, pathogens and selection
Organised by Professor Danny Altmann, Dr Francois Balloux and Dr Rosemary Boyton In this Satellite meeting we aim to bring together an international cohort of academics from highly diverse backgrounds so that anthropologists, historians, geneticists, immunologists, molecular microbiologists and experts on the evolution of language can together bring their knowledge to bear on plotting the timeline of human history and the forces that have shaped it. We will consider the co-evolution of man, our immune system and our major pathogens, taking into account recent evidence from DNA sequencing initiatives alongside the evidence ...

Human evolution, migration and history revealed by genetics, immunity and infection
This meeting offers a journey from molecules to history, bringing together geneticists, immunologists, anthropologists and historians. Infection has been the most potent evolutionary force in human history, eliminating genes offering poor resistance and selecting for new mutations conferring protection against a threat. Can genetics help us understand natural selection, human evolution and migration over the past 70,000 years? Venue: The Royal Society Start date: Mon, 06 Jun 2011 09:00:00 +0100 End date: Tue, 07 Jun 2011 17:00:00 +0100 (Source: Nature Network London - Upcoming Events)

Analysing and moderating the function of regulatory cells in autoimmunity
Autoimmune diseases affect up to 5% of Westernised populations and there is a pressing need to understand the underlying immunological mechanisms in order to design effective, targeted approaches to treatment. A key to such progress will be to determine why self-tolerance is lost in these conditions, and how it can be restored therapeutically. The recognition that various forms of regulatory cell have important roles in suppressing unwanted or damaging immune responses, including those that drive autoimmune disease, now provides an opportunity to achieve these goals. The meeting will discuss the identities and functions of...

Identifying T Cell Subset Phenotype and Function in Infections
A revolution in the basic understanding of immunology occurred in the late 1980s with the discovery that CD4+ helper T cells were not a homogeneous population but could be divided into Th1 and Th2 subsets based on their cytokine profiles. 20 years later the field of T cell subset phenotype and function remains fast moving with the recently demonstrated existence of T regulatory and Th17 cells adding extra layers of complexity. The meeting will explore current ideas about the roles played by these varied T cells subsets in a variety of parasitic infections with presentations from leaders in the field Meeting Chair: Dr Marc...

Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells Sense Nucleic Acid in Viral Infection and Autoimmune Disease
Yong-Jun Liu is one of the best immunologists in the world. He has made significant contributions to several fields of immunology, especially human immunology. In his early work, he identified BCR and CD40 signaling as one of the major molecular mechanisms for selecting high affinity antigen specific B cells in germinal centers, an important mechanism for affinity maturation in antibody responses. He characterized human B cell subsets and identified molecular regulation of germinal center B cell differentiation. Yong-Jun is the one who discovered a new cell type in the immune system: plasmacytoid dendritic cells, which ope...

Triggering murine arthritis by a single commensal microbe
We report that autoimmune arthritis was strongly attenuated in the K/BxN mouse model under germ-free (GF) conditions, accompanied by reductions in serum-autoantibody titers, splenic autoantibody-secreting cells, germinal centers and the splenic T helper (Th)17 cell population. Neutralization of interleukin-17 prevented arthritis development in specific-pathogen-free K/BxN mice due to a direct effect of this cytokine on B cells to inhibit germinal center formation. The systemic immune-system deficiencies of the GF animals reflected a loss of Th17 cells from the small-intestinal lamina-propria in the absence of gut microbiot...

Food allergies - what is there to worry about?
Concerns about food allergies have increased over the last 20 years, with tragic incidents of fatal reactions, often involving young people eating foods like peanuts. The lack of good quality data on how many people suffer from food allergies, which foods they react to, how much of a food can cause a problem, has been hampering the development of effective management strategies to allow patients with allergies a better quality of life. These issues have been addressed through the EuroPrevall project, which is looking at allergies in people all throughout Europe. Data has been collected on doses that trigger reactions, whi...
