My Story.
Basically, I'm an undocumented 26 year old that graduated from college in 2008. During my senior year in college I was in application mode for Dental school. That year I took the DAT twice with average to above-average scores. However, at the last minute I decided not to apply to dental school b/c of my immigration status.
Four years later, President Obama passes an executive order(http://immigrationequality.org/issue...n-basics/daca/) so undocumented kids like me can get a work permit. The executive order doesn't give me legal status, but it does give me a temporary relief for 2 years with chance to renew for another 2 ...

Sorry, but Romney destroyed Obama tonight. He just did.
He just did. He really did. Even MSNBC was depressed over it. I actually felt a little bad for him. It was sort of painful to watch.

GUN SHOTS at WesternU explained by the president (and elaborated by student)
Hello everybody (this is the University President addressing the whole student body):
Tremendous emphasis is put on campus safety at WesternU (hmmmm, thats debatable). In addition to being patrolled 24 hours a day by Imperial Security (ironically, a fancy name for a lousy service), we have an excellent relationship with the Pomona Police Department (I would hope so after all the calls they get from our campus), which conducts safety seminars on campus (like bullet proof vest fittings?), in addition to being our guests for its own continuing education and training workshops (might as well train where you will have to use...

Obama & Healthcare

Are you concerned with the Healthcare industry becoming socialized in the US?

I have a degree in economics and I have lived in Europe under a socialized healthcare system and frankly I am quite concerned about healthcare in the US and where it will be going.

If it is up to the government to determine if I need Pulmozyme or VX 770 Kalydeco, particularly given their expense I wonder if I will be receiving these meds or all the others I routinely use. I remember a thread here on Cysticfibrosis.com a couple of years ago in which a person living in Britain didn't have access t...

Should creationists be allowed to be doctors?
In this era of evidence-based medicine, does it make sense to tolerate people who hold beliefs not supported by evidence? Do we really want someone prescribing eye of newt, toe of frog, or prayer because they have "faith" they will work? Or do we want real doctors? (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

My thoughts and questions on Massachusetts Universal Health Coverage
In late '06, Massachusetts (MA) started to implement universal coverage for people in MA. In '06, about 7% or so of residents in MA were uncovered. The plan would do the following:
1. Salary < 100% of Federal Poverty Level (FPL) gets totally free healthcare and dental.
2. 100% < Salary < 150% of FPL gets totally free healthcare
3. 150% < Salary < 300% of FPL gets subsidized healthcare based on a sliding scale.
4. FPL > 300%, which is $66K for a family of 4, then I'm not sure if people are still subsidized at this level, but they *MUST* have insurance or pay a fine.
Moreover, companies with more ...

Inspired by medical field, need answers to questions!!
I've done some searches for the questions I'm about to ask, and haven't found much information on the forums.
First and foremost, my family is surprised about my interest in medicine. I come from family and beliefs about natural medicine, holistic, etcetc. While I do have interests in natural/holistic medicine and ideas, I have strong interests in other areas. My interests in medicine are surgery, neurology, psychiatry, plastic surgery, and natural medicine. Quite a range of interests, I know. What are some suggestions you all might have for discovering what field I would be best in? Is there a place for someone like me ...

Asking for prayers for my stepson
I am new to this site. My name is Tammy Ruff and I have a stepson that was diagnosed when he was 5yrs old with CF. He has been doing well and never had to be admitted to the hospital. He is 21yrs old now and he is working a temp job with no insurance and has not been going to see the dr because of worries on the cost. He finally went yesterday and was admitted to KU Med Center. Asking for prayers for him. His name is Jacob Ruff and all this is new to him. I am trying to get him on my insurance due to the Obama change and/or getting financial help from the hospital.

Thank you all an...

Will healthcare reform mean greater access to treatment?
Author: darren

One of my main concens about the gov taking over healthcare will be the millions of people who will be added to the healthcare system. Currently we have long waits to get an appt for a doc visit. with millions add to the system there will be even longer waits. For example. I have relatives who live in canada and they have to wait up to 6mos to see a doc. One of them was told he had cancer and he had to see a specialist. Well the appt. was set. He would have to wait 5 mos. Instead he came into the US and was seen right ...
