Stem cell-like human endothelial progenitors show enhanced colony-forming capacity after brief sevoflurane exposure: preconditioning of angiogenic cells by volatile anesthetics.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: Sevoflurane preconditioning promotes growth and proliferation of stem cell-like human endothelial progenitors. Hence, it may be used to promote perioperative vascular healing and to support cell replacement therapies. PMID: 19762739 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrate that isoflurane inhibits CaM translocation and P-CREB formation. This most likely occurs through isoflurane inhibition of Ca(2+)entry through L-type Ca(2+) channels. PMID: 19762740 [PubMed - in process]

CONCLUSIONS: The HMD helped anesthesiologists detect events when physically constrained, but not when physically unconstrained. Although there was no conclusive evidence of worsened inattentional blindness, found in aviation, the perceptual properties of the HMD display appear to influence whether events are detected. Anesthesiologists wearing HMDs should self-adjust the focus to minimize eyestrain and should be aware that some changes may not attract their attention. Future areas of research include developing principles for the design of HMDs, evaluating other types of HMDs, and evaluating the HMD in clinical contexts. ...

Impact of multiaccess infusion devices on in vitro drug delivery during multi-infusion therapy.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: Multi-infusion therapy induces perturbation in drug delivery. These perturbations (lag time, backflow, and bolus) could be reduced by using infusion sets including very low dead space volume and an ARV. PMID: 19762742 [PubMed - in process]

An analysis of drug delivery dynamics via a pediatric central venous infusion system: quantification of delays in achieving intended doses.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: Current infusion techniques in the pediatric care setting can result in significant, unrecognized, and potentially hazardous delays in achieving delivery of intended drug doses to the patient. Total flow rate, priming of the infusion system, the dead volume of the fluid path, and the start-up performance of the infusion pump system contribute to delays in achieving targeted rates of drug delivery. Here is a project from the folks at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London, and its Mechatronics in Medicine Laboratory, who are bent on developing an "active robot designed to take blood samples from the ante-cubital fossa..." The Bloodbot identifies the location of a suitable vein by pressing a probe against the surface tissue of the ante-cubital fossa and measuring the force on the probe. The difference in the characteristics of the tissue from its surroundings, in response to the applied force, indicates the presence of a vein. Once a suitable vein has been found, it inserts a needle und...

In this debate, we explore the dilemmas between the law, the ethical issues, the good clinical practice, and the wishes of the family. In the scenario chosen, the issues center around not only the senior family members but also of an older child with some rights to self-determination. There are no absolute rights or wrongs to this case, which is based on a synthesis of other actual clinical scenarios. The maze of considerations are not easy to negotiate, and in the final analysis, the surgeon and the anesthetist must also be comfortable with the decisions as they are the active elements that have to practically manage ...

The debate about the management of pain in the neonate has continued to evolve over the past 30 years. This controversy can be understood as evolving through now three eras of thought about the effect of pain and its management in newborns and infants. The first generation was characterized by a widespread belief that newborns lacked the complete development of the neuroanatomical and neuroendocrine components necessary to perceive pain. During this period, newborns often received inadequate anesthesia and analgesia for painful procedures, if not no treatment at all. The second generation was heralded by research that ...
