UCL or Threshold Discomfort Testing
Does anyone know the procedure for UCL or threshold discomfort testing for speech and tones that doesn't involve the Cox Contour Test? For example, what frequencies are tested, is the signal presented constantly then increased? How the patient is asked to respond, etc? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

More job questions
To all the sage PP guys: Firstly, thank you for all the wonderful advice you have given all of us. Secondly, I ended up not taking that job in TX for several reasons. Now, I'm in my fellowship in beautiful southern CA and considering staying in PP here. One practice here has an offer but I don't yet have all of the fine details. But the premise is to come on as an independent contractor rather than employee or partner. No salary. Straight up take home 50% of net collections from the beginning. Fah-Q had advised previously that this was the way to go. I'm not shy about doing it but I think that's all it is. There's no par...

Life Insurance Buying Tips
Buying life insurance policy is beneficial for you and your family. Few people approach to life insurance. They start thinking about life insurance after they have had a brush with death or when a life insurance professional brings up the subject. Life insurance is perceived differently by different people. Depending upon an individual’s age and lifestyle, it can either be taken for granted or considered as critical provision for a family’s financial security. The life insurance official contract comes under two classes that are, protection policy and investment policy. In case of protection policy, it is typically pla...

Kangaroo Joey Feeding pump

Hey Everyone,

I just switched over to a newer version of the kangaroo Joey pump a few weeks ago. I used to have the old model (it was tan) Some things I like about it, some I don't. One thing I don't like is the screen. It's all digial so it's really bright! I already found a solution to that issue. I taped a post it note over it and that helped a lot. It blocks most of the brightness. The other thing I don't like is how loud it is! It actally doesn't bother me when I'm sleeping because I have my cochlear implants and I sleep without them so I can't hear t...

Audiologist Salary in Canada
Ok, looking at some of the US Audiology salary threads has got me a bit worried. I know salaries are different depending on the states but are they that low in some states? Alright, on topic now, how are the audiologist salaries in Canada? According to UBC audiology, average pay is $77000. And according to Alberta stats, starting median is $33/hour and the average median is $45/hour which doesn't sound too bad. But when, I look at the US stats: http://www.asha.org/uploadedFiles/10...alaries(1).pdf , the salaries aren't as bad as most are reporting. Thoughts? And how accurate are the stats? Would UBC lie to attract more peo...

Should I take a month off for research? (MSIII)
I am currently a third year contemplating whether or not it would be necessary to do any research. I got a 230 on my Step I and honored my neurology rotation. I did do biological research for a year in my senior year of undergrad and with the same guy for my elective in third year. The most I got out of it was presenting a poster at an ENT national conference in LA (the paper was on pathways of hearing and cochlear implants so it was neurology related) Now I want to try to get in as competitive a program as possible (doesnt everyone :p), but I don't know if the *time* I spent with research mattered as much as not getting...

Is it even worth mentioning these non clinical volunteering activities
1) for a full semester, I volunteered to take notes for student in my history class that was deaf. 2) I play rugby for my college. During the off season (fall semester) for the past two years, we would volunteer our time about twice a month to help organizations around our city. This included cleaning upthe shores of a section of river, helping setup and dismantle community events, repairing the youth rugby leagues field, etc. essentially, organizations would ask us to do manual labor for themwhen they needed hands. My concern with this is while I did not consistently volunteer for the same entity over and over, I am par...

Question about physics class
Hi everyone, just needed some advice about my physics class I'm taking at a community college at the moment...I've decided to apply for schools this year, and I wanted to take physics since I thought it would help for grad school (I was not a CSD major, I majored in mass communications for my BA in 2009)...but I'm not doing well in the class at all. If I continue in the course I'm pretty sure I will get a C. Would it look terrible if I withdrew from the class since it will appear on my transcript? If I'm not doing well in physics does it not bode well for me in an audiology program? I've taken psychology classes, A&P...

Hello everyone. I have never posted in this forum before, but I have lurked and read for a while. I have been in a predicament where I need advice whether or not I should pursue Audiology and perhaps where I would find the best program. I have recently completed my first year of medical school. I found myself disliking my decision to attend early on in school last year, but I stuck with it hoping for things to change. However, I have become disinterested in the field and nothing can keep me from leaving. I currently wear Oticon Epoqs XW and need to find an FM system that is compatible with my hearing aids and will work well in a multitude of settings. I know several different audiologists and they have told me all different things: One recommended the Phonak EasyLink with a neckloop. (I didn't like this recommendation) One recommended the Phonak ZoomLink with the adaptable receivers. I liked what the Zoomlink could do for me. One recommend the Oticon Amigo with receivers because apparently the Phonak receivers with the ZoomLi...

How to distinguish between the congenital TORCH infenctinos?
These diseases keep coming up Qbank... and I feel like I'm missing easy points. How do you distinguish among the congenital infections? It seems a lot of them have things in common, i.e. deafness, cataracts, calcifications, etc... What is your strategy for answering these questions? So far I have just been trying to figure out the "unique" features of each... I.e. rubella and PDA. Can someone help me out and help me sort out this overlap? Thanks!!! Sensitivity to Sound with TOBI?
Thank you for your replies. As you know, it is so difficult and scary trying all these new medications because there are so many side effects and it's hard to tell what is causing what. I'm not starting multiple meds at the same time for this reason, but it's still hard. I stopped the TOBI because of the chest tightness and further decline in breath, but now that I've been off for four days and the chest pain has lessened, it seems that it had already cleared some of the thick mucus--and I have a lot of that--so it was doing something positive. But, is it worth weeks of chest discomfort and compromised breathing every othe...

To out of field potential AUD students..
It appears that not having a background in speech and hearing sciences is a major concern for quite a number of potential AUD students. My professor who is on my school's graduate admissions committee told me that they LOVE out of field students--because they can think outside the box and can offer insights from their previous fields that speech and hearing science students may not be able to do. As long as you did well enough in your upper level undergrad classes (and yea the GRE, letters, etc.), you may have a chance. Ok, but let's be realistic--a 4.0 in recreational leadership may not work. The truth is, many speech...

Pug with Meningitis vs mass?
OK, I'm an ER attending (human doctor!) and have a problem with my family dog (living with my mom) who is a 5 year old pug with a history of seizures (on potassium bromide). She's also deaf and I think has some congenital defects (she was the runt of the litter, and is very small for a pug). Anyway, my mom took her to to vet a several weeks ago because she was limping (back right leg) and they gave her an injection of "something" which didn't really help. Anyway, 5 days ago, she was very lethargic and bumping in to things, and seemed depressed (tail not in it's normal curl) and didn't want to eat anything. So my...
