Relationship between neuroimaging findings and auditory and metaphonological abilities in students with developmental dyslexiaemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study evidenced correlation between auditory memory tasks and syllabic and phonemic manipulation, and association between auditory and phonological abilities, suggesting that auditory processes interfere directly in the perception of acoustic, temporal and sequential aspects of sounds to form a stable phonological representation, and that this might be caused by the presence of blood flow changes on the temporal lobe. Vlog by FireflyCalisthenics? We are so up for it! At the beginning of YLC, most of us didn’t like morning exercises, but today it started to grow on us. The campers will return to home and continue their morning calisthenics, we hope! Morning exercises rock our socks off!We had a guest speaker today! From Rochester, New York, we welcomed Dr. Peter Hauser to YLC! Peter graduated from Central Connecticut State University in 1994. He then went to Gallaudet University, where he obtained his MA degree in 1998 and his PhD degree in 2000. He currently works as the Director of Deaf Studies Lab at NTID and as Director of Neurocon...

CONCLUSION: The results indicate the need for audiological monitoring and neurological follow-up in children with previous history of pyogenic meningitis, especially those infected in early ages, seeking to identify possible hearing impairments and to intervene as soon as possible, through specialized intervention, prothetization, and oral language rehabilitation. Cochlear implantation in a profoundly deaf patient who also suffers from multiple sclerosis - a case studyemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
We present a case study of cochlear implantation in a post-lingual adult having bilateral profound hearing loss for over 30 years in addition to multiple sclerosis unrelated to his deafness. Assessment of benefit in terms of speech-perception ability and quality of life reveal that long-term auditory deprivation and co-incidental multiple sclerosis are not a contraindication for cochlear implantation. This morning we did something different with the campers. We had a wrap up session for the campers with the camp director. The campers were given the chance to give feedback on the program so we can improve for next year! We truly value the campers' input and opinions, there is always room for improvement! YLC is, after all, all about the experience of our campers! Today we had two very important guests visit us here at YLC. Melissa Draganac-Hawk, who is a member on the NAD Board, and Michelle Lapides, Miss Deaf America 2008-2010! Melissa gave a workshop to the campers about NAD, Jr. NAD, and state associations. Investigating the Technical Adequacy of Curriculum-Based Measurement in Written Expression for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearingemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
This study investigated the technical adequacy of curriculum-based measures of written expression (CBM-W) in terms of writing prompts and scoring methods for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Twenty-two students at the secondary school-level completed 3-min essays within two weeks, which were scored for nine existing and alternative curriculum-based measurement (CBM) scoring methods. The technical features of the nine scoring methods were examined for interrater reliability, alternate-form reliability, and criterion-related validity. The existing CBM scoring method—number of correct minus incorrect word sequences&md...

Multisensory interactions in primate auditory cortex: fMRI and electrophysiology.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Recent studies suggest that multisensory integration does not only occur in higher association cortices but also at early stages of auditory processing, possibly in primary or secondary auditory cortex. Support for such early multisensory influences comes from functional magnetic resonance imaging experiments in humans and monkeys. However we argue that the current understanding of neurovascular coupling and of the neuronal basis underlying the imaging signal does not permit the direct extrapolation from imaging data to properties of neurons in the same region. While imaging can guide subsequent electrophysiological st...

The Role of Sign Phonology and Iconicity During Sign Processing: The Case of Deaf Childrenemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
To investigate the influence of sign phonology and iconicity during sign processing in deaf children, the roles of these sign features were examined using an experimental sign–picture verification paradigm. Participants had to make decisions about sign–picture pairs, manipulated according to phonological sign features (i.e., hand shape, movement, and location) and iconic sign features (i.e., transparent depiction of meaning or not). We found that phonologically related sign pairs resulted in relatively longer response latencies and more errors whereas iconic sign pairs resulted in relatively shorter response la...

Semin Hear 2009; 30: 287-305DOI: 10.1055/s-0029-1241129ABSTRACTBenign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a peripheral vestibular disorder that manifests as sudden, short-lived episodes of vertigo elicited by specific head movements. BPPV is one of the most common causes of dizziness or vertigo, and almost 10% of the elderly population experiences BPPV. It is often self-limiting but can become chronic and recurrent with considerable effects on a person's quality of life. Most cases result from the migration of free-floating canalith particles into the posterior (more commonly) or horizontal (less commonly) semicircular...

Phonological awareness and decoding skills in deaf adolescentsemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
This study investigated the phonological awareness skills of a group of deaf adolescents and how these skills correlated with decoding skills (single word and non-word reading) and receptive vocabulary.Twenty, congenitally profoundly deaf adolescents with at least average nonverbal cognitive skills were tested on a range of phonological awareness tasks, and a non-word and real-word reading task, and their speech intelligibility was rated. Scores on a receptive vocabulary measure were gathered from existing records. All participants met an inclusion criterion of scoring within one standard deviation of the mean on a non-ver...
