Golf after Hemipelvectomy
He was 41 years old with a great job and a loving family. Then doctors gave him the horrible news. Cancer. To survive they would have to take his entire left leg and part of his pelvis. The man you're about to meet refused to let this stop him from living a full life. Seven years after the diagnosis and surgery, he's not only healthy, but he's also playing golf. Medicine: Mind the Gap - Helping Smokers With Behavioral Health Comorbidity Requires a National Effort
Medicine: Mind the Gap is a lecture series that explores issues at the intersection of research, evidence, and clinical practice—areas in which conventional wisdom may be contradicted by recent evidence. From the role of advocacy organizations in medical research and policy, to off-label drug use, to the effectiveness of continuing medical education, the seminar series will aim to engage the National Institutes of Health community in thought-provoking discussions to challenge what we think we know and to think critically about our role in today’s research environment.
Dr. Williams will be speaking about the fact that ...

New Insights into Tumor Suppressor Gene Networks
Special Monday WALS Lecture
Cancer arises through an evolutionary process whereby normal cells acquire mutations that erode growth controls, leading to the inappropriate expansion of aberrantly proliferating cells. Such mutations can involve activation of oncogenes or inactivation of tumor-suppressor genes, each contributing one or more new capabilities to the developing cancer cell. However, cancer is not an inevitable consequence of oncogenic mutations; instead, cells acquiring such mutations can be eliminated or kept in check by innate tumor-suppressor programs that can be activated in these damaged cells. The Lowe lab...

Color Blue Detects Colon Cancer
Sleuthing. Looking for clues. That's what doctors do when they search for signs of colon cancer. One of their main tools is the endoscope. They use it to look at the colon for signs of disease. The technology can detect cancer early when it's still curable. Now, doctors at Mayo Clinic are modifying the test to hopefully make it more effective for high risk patients. Medical Radiation and cancer risk: assessing the price of progress
Radiation exposure to the US population from diagnostic imaging has increased 6-fold in the last three decades, primarily due to the rapid increase in CT scans from 1 to 80 million per year. Despite the great medical benefits there are concerns about the potential future cancer risks from CT and other higher dose imaging tests such as nuclear medicine cardiac stress tests. Dr. Berrington's Radiation Epidemiology Branch conducted the first study to directly assess the cancer risks after CT scans in a historical cohort study of 200,000 children in the UK. Dr. Berrington will discuss the first results from this study and also...

Cancer Treatment Related Cardiotoxicity (Day 2)
Cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity is a leading cause of treatment-associated morbidity and mortality in cancer survivors. The gaps in knowledge related to cardiotoxicity are large, including mechanisms of cardiac injury, clinical prediction, screening, prevention, and treatment, as well as the similarities and differences between cancer induced cardiotoxicity and primary cardiovascular disease. There is an increasing interest in studying cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity by both the cardiology and oncology specialties.
The goal of this two days conference is to bring together multiple disciplines within cardi...
