Academic Health Center scientists, physicians, and research centers have attracted 128 grants totaling nearly $35 million in federal stimulus money (as of Nov. 10) since the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was approved in February 2009. This will result in a total economic impact of more than $105 million; according to the National Institutes of Health, $1 of research funding multiplies to more than $2 of goods and services in the economy.

Conclusions:
In patients with cardiovascular disease in the community, chronic kidney disease and anaemia occur commonly. The presence of chronic kidney disease carries an increased mortality risk which increases in an additive way with the addition of anaemia. These results suggest that early primary care diagnosis and management of this high risk group may be worthwhile.

A controlled trial found that patients with renal artery stenosis who were assigned to revascularisation in addition to medical therapy had no statistically significant benefits and were at risk of significant complications.
Renal artery stenosis due to atherosclerosis is fairly common and has significant morbidity and mortality. Traditional treatment has concentrated on revascularisation, initially using open surgery and now more often using endovascular techniques. There is, however, limited evidence on the benefits of revascularisation, and this non-blinded trial was intended to inves...

This article reviews the evidence for clopidogrel, prasugrel and ticagrelor in acute coronary syndromes, and provides recommendations on their optimal use in clinical practice.
The authors note that a lack of head to head trials of prasugrel and ticagrelor limits the comparison of these agents; nevertheless the data so far suggest that both are 'potent agents with improved ischemic benefits in comparison to clopidogrel. The improved benefit comes with the price of increased bleeding. As such, careful patient selection and balancing of benefit-risk is warranted to optimise their use in clinical practice.'

The FDA has warned US health professionals of a change to the official (USP) standards for heparin manufacture that will result in a fall in the potency of US heparin by up to 10%. This will mainly be relevant to patients receiving IV heparin as SC bioavailability is more variable anyway.
Health professionals elsewhere are NOT affected by this change unless they are using heparin to USP standards: the new USP potency now matches the World Health Organisation's International Standard unit dose that is used in Europe.
UK practitioners are only likely to be affected if they take over...

Conclusions: PrP(+) cells from beating embryoid bodies (EBs) frequently included nascent Myhc(+) cardiomyocytes. These cells were electrophysiologically functional and able to survive in vivo after transplantation. Combining PrP with a second marker, platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR)alpha, enabled us to identify an earlier cardiomyogenic population from prebeating EBs, the PrP(+)PDGFRalpha(+) (PRa) cells. Reactive oxygen species are ubiquitous signaling molecules in biological systems. Four members of the NADPH oxidase (Nox) enzyme family are important sources of reactive oxygen species in the vasculature: Nox1, Nox2, Nox4, and Nox5. Signaling cascades triggered by stresses, hormones, vasoactive agents, and cytokines control the expression and activity of these enzymes and of their regulatory subunits, among which p22phox, p47phox, Noxa1, and p67phox are present in blood vessels. Vascular Nox enzymes are also regulated by Rac, ClC-3, Poldip2, and protein disulfide isomerase. Multiple Nox subtypes, simultaneously present...
