This study used pooled data from a large number of prospective cardiovascular risk factor studies to assess the overall risk of coronary heart disease and stroke associated with various lipid factors. The data were obtained from the Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration (ERFC), which includes shared individual records from 112 prospective studies of cardiovascular risk factors, involving a total of 1.2 million participants. For this analysis, participants were selected who had no known cardiovascular disease at baseline and had complete information at baseline on lipid ...

Heart rate variability, a sign of a healthy heart, has been shown to be higher in yoga practitioners than in non-practitioners, according to research to be published in a forthcoming issue of the International Journal of Medical Engineering and Informatics. The autonomic nervous system regulates the heart rate through two routes - the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The former causes the heart rate to rise, while, the parasympathetic slows it.

Patients with atrial fibrillation taking vitamin-K antagonists and undergoing invasive interventions or large surgery procedures are at highest risk of bleeding complications. Therefore, the temporary interruption of vitamin-K antagonists and bridging with heparin is a frequent clinical need, particularly in patients with high risk for stroke. The management of such patients is challenging because of the lack of randomized clinical trials assessing different periprocedural anticoagulation approaches and inconsistent recommendations from consensus groups. Recent non-randomized trials have helped to estimate the risks of thr...
