Background:
Resistin, secreted from adipocytes, causes insulin resistance in mice. The relationship between resistin and coronary artery disease is highly controversial, and the information regarding resistin and ischemic stroke is limited. In the present study, the association between serum resistin concentration and cardiovascular disease (CVD) was investigated in a general Japanese population.
Methods:
A total of 3,201 community-dwelling individuals aged 40 years or older (1,382 men and 1,819 women) were divided into quintiles of serum resistin, and the association between resistin and CVD was examined cross-sectionally...

J Clin Hypertens (Greenwich). Arm size can affect the accuracy of blood pressure (BP) measurement, and "undercuffing" of large upper arms is likely to be a growing problem. Therefore, the authors investigated the relationship between upper arm and wrist readings. Upper arm and wrist circumferences and BP were measured in 261 consecutive patients. Upper arm auscultation and wrist BP was measured in triplicate, rotating measurements every 30 seconds between sites. Upper arm BP was 131.9±20.6/71.6±12.6 mm Hg in an obese population (body mass index, 30.6±6.6 kg/m2) with mean upper arm size of 30.7±5.1 cm. Wrist BP was high...

This Commentary article in JAMA discusses how the use of digoxin in the treatment of patients with chronic heart failure has decreased considerably, and argues that it is time to 'remember a forgotten drug'.
Digoxin was licensed for this use based on the results of the Digitalis Investigation Group trial, which found that it reduced hospitalisations when added to standard therapy (diuretics and ACE inhibitors), although there was no effect on survival. Available data suggest that digoxin use has decreased considerably in the last 10 years; the author postulates several factor...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common tachyarrhythmia, with a prevalence of 5% in people over the age of 65. Three-dimensional (3D) electroanatomic mapping systems were introduced into catheter ablation of AF more than a decade ago. The 3D tool has the benefit of reducing the radiation exposure time, as well as voltage and fractionation mapping in order to identify the critical substrate during the ablation, prevent the formation of gaps, guide the ablation of post-ablation atrial tac...
