Endothelial Progenitor Cells Bind and Inhibit Platelet Function and Thrombus Formation.

Conclusions-Peripheral blood mononuclear cell-derived EPCs bind platelets via CD62P and inhibit platelet activation, aggregation, adhesion to collagen, and thrombus formation, predominantly via upregulation of cyclooxygenase-2 and secretion of prostacyclin. These findings add new insights into the biology of EPCs and define their potential roles in regulating platelet function and thrombosis.

Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is superior to medical management for stroke prevention in patients with symptomatic and, to a lesser degree, asymptomatic internal carotid artery stenosis. However, large-scale registries have shown that the adverse event rates following CEA are commonly higher than observed in the trials. In the last decade, carotid artery stenting (CAS) has emerged as a less invasive alternative to surgery. In order to address the efficacy of CAS, we performed a meta-analysis of 10 randomized trials comparing CAS with CEA in 4648 mainly symptomatic patients. ...

The 4 year incidence of ST after DES implantation is low. A relevant number of ST occur early after discontinuation of clopidogrel therapy. The dependence of ST on discontinuation of clopidogrel therapy seems to be mostly confined to the first 6 months after DES implantation. However, specifically designed randomized studies are required to establish the optimal length of clopidogrel therapy after DES implantation.

However, when the balance is altered and the body absorbs too much selenium, such as through taking selenium supplements, it can have adverse affects.
