Hidden Heart Attack
A heart attack at age 35. That's not supposed to happen. The woman you're about to meet suffered what's called a spontaneous coronary artery dissection, or SCAD. It's a condition that's hard to diagnose and there's very little information available about it. Experts at Mayo Clinic have results from studies aimed at learning more about this life-threatening condition. (Source: Mayo Clinic - Medical Edge Video)

Genotype to mechanism to therapy: molecular insights in rare genetic vascular diseases.
Director's Seminar Series
Injury and remodeling of blood vessels occur as a direct result of cardiovascular disease, as in atherosclerosis or myocardial infarction, and also in response to therapeutic interventions, including stenting and vein graft bypasses. Dr. Boehm studies vascular injury and remodeling in order to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms and to develop new treatment methods. His laboratory develops animal models of disease and derives cellular models from patients with rare and even undiagnosed cardiovascular diseases.Air date: 5/3/2013 12:00:00 PM (Source: Videocast - All Events)

Molecular Mechanisms Regulating Mammalian Aging
The Geroscience Interest Group (GSIG) cordially invites you to the seminar listed above. Dr. Finkel is Chief of the Center for Molecular Medicine in the Division of Intramural Research at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Dr. Finkel’s lab investigates the role of cellular metabolism and oxidative stress in aging and age-related diseases. His research has included studies on oxidative homeostasis in stem cell biology, cellular senescence as a model for aging, the role of autophagy in age-related diseases, and interrogating pathways in model organisms to understand their role in mammalian aging. Dr. Finkel is ...

5 Years on a VAD
You have six months. Maybe a year. That was reality for heart failure patient Verna Schrombeck. Her condition had deteriorated to the point where treatment no longer helped. Because of her age, she was not a candidate for a heart transplant. Doctors at Mayo Clinic implanted a device that would hopefully keep Verna alive, at least a little while. Years later she shares her story. (Source: Mayo Clinic - Medical Edge Video)

Intro: Cookies, candy, eggnog and gravy. Those are some of the goodies we often can't resist at holiday gatherings. But for patients with an underlying heart condition, such as heart failure, a few days of eating the wrong foods can cause some real problems. Cancer Treatment Related Cardiotoxicity (Day 2)
Cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity is a leading cause of treatment-associated morbidity and mortality in cancer survivors. The gaps in knowledge related to cardiotoxicity are large, including mechanisms of cardiac injury, clinical prediction, screening, prevention, and treatment, as well as the similarities and differences between cancer induced cardiotoxicity and primary cardiovascular disease. There is an increasing interest in studying cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity by both the cardiology and oncology specialties.
The goal of this two days conference is to bring together multiple disciplines within cardi...

Stem Cells 101
Intro: Stem cells and their use in regenerative medicine have been in the media a lot lately. But, what exactly does it mean? Physicians and researchers in the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Mayo Clinic say it has to do with developing completely new ways to treat and manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart failure or even degenerative nerve, bone and joint conditions. Experts worldwide will meet this December for the World Stem Cell Summit, where they'll explore and share ideas about regenerative medicine. Here are the basics of how this research benefits patients. (Source: Mayo Clinic - Medical Edge Video)
