ADAMTS-1 and ADAMTS-4 Levels Are Elevated in Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms and Dissections [ORIGINAL ARTICLES: ADULT CARDIAC]
Conclusions
Increased expression of ADAMTS proteins may promote thoracic aortic aneurysm progression by degrading versican and facilitating macrophage invasion.

The Role of Head Computed Tomography Imaging in the Evaluation of Postoperative Neurologic Deficits in Cardiac Surgery Patients [ORIGINAL ARTICLES: ADULT CARDIAC]
Conclusions
This study reviewed the utility of early postoperative noncontrast head CT in cardiac surgery patients. With focal neurologic deficits, this imaging modality was positive for approximately one third of patients, but rarely positive for NFD. Its use in this setting has limited utility.

Prophylactic Magnesium Does Not Prevent Atrial Fibrillation After Cardiac Surgery: A Meta-Analysis [ORIGINAL ARTICLES: ADULT CARDIAC]
Conclusions
This meta-analysis, restricted to well-conducted trials, does not support the prophylactic use of Mg to prevent AF after cardiac surgery. Prior meta-analyses have drawn conclusions from simple random-effects models with significant heterogeneity. However, this approach leaves important residual heterogeneity and overemphasizes the strongly positive effects of smaller studies.

Mechanical Circulatory Support Pathways That Maximize Post-Heart Transplant Survival [ORIGINAL ARTICLES: ADULT CARDIAC]
Conclusions
The LVAD supported HTx recipients have better posttransplant survival than patients after all other mechanical support pathways. Survival after HTx is optimized when ECMO or biventricular assist device support can be transitioned to LVAD-only support. Our findings should aid clinical decision making and inform organ allocation policy development intended to maximize societal benefits of HTx.

Feasibility and Safety of Nonintubated Thoracoscopic Lobectomy for Geriatric Lung Cancer Patients [ORIGINAL ARTICLES: GENERAL THORACIC]
Conclusions
Nonintubated thoracoscopic lobectomy is technically feasible and was as safe as thoracoscopic lobectomy performed with tracheal intubation in the geriatric lung cancer patients. Thoracoscopic lobectomy without tracheal intubation during anesthesia is a valid alternative for managing selected geriatric patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Nutritional Status and Postoperative Outcome After Pneumonectomy for Lung Cancer [ORIGINAL ARTICLES: GENERAL THORACIC]
Conclusions
The frequency of malnutrition detected by biological markers was dramatically high. Malnutrition, as well as recent active smoking and extended resection, is a predictive factor for infectious complications and mortality after pneumonectomy. Nutritional assessment with appropriate markers should be considered before pneumonectomy.

Minimally Invasive Transhiatal Esophagectomy After Thoracotomy [CASE REPORTS]
Patients with end-stage achalasia may not be candidates for a transhiatal minimally invasive esophageal resection because of anatomic challenges and adhesions from previous interventions, namely, thoracotomy. A Primary Pulmonary Glomus Tumor Complicated With Hyperpyrexia and Anemia [CASE REPORTS]
Pulmonary glomus tumors are extremely rare, with only 19 cases having been reported worldwide. The glomus body is considered to be related to the regulation of body temperature, but the reported cases were not associated with hyperpyrexia. Here, we describe a 28-year-old man with hyperpyrexia and anemia complicated with a coin lesion of the right lung. After resection of the upper lobe of the right lung by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, all of the patient's symptoms disappeared. The pathologic analysis reported a rare pulmonary glomus tumor. The disease had not recurred by 1 year after operation.

Drospirenone‐containing oral contraceptives and risk of adverse outcomes after myocardial infarction
Conclusion:This is the first study to evaluate the myocardial infarction risk and its subsequent clinical sequelae in women having a STEMI while taking the OC‐Yasmin. History of carotid artery stenting.
Abstract
The history of carotid artery stenting (CAS) was made by brave men and women who believed in a less invasive treatment modality than carotid endarterectomy (CEA) to treat carotid stenosis despite the risk - which was obviously present also with surgery - to cause a stroke, the very event that the procedure aimed to prevent. The bulky equipment, the lack of knowledge about the appropriate antithrombotic regimen, and the impossibility at early stage to influence distal embolization added to the pressure on the investigators. At times, the confrontation with the surgical community has been hard. The technique...
