Concerned about getting g-tube for son
<p>I have a 15 year old son with autism and cf. He has been struggling to gain weight since he was 7. He is 5ft. 3in. and weigh 72lbs. Recently the dietician said he may benefit from a g-tube to use at night to help. I am curious how this has helped with your children and what to expect with the surgery if we end up doing it. Even though he is 15, he is not that age developmentally. I am wondering how long of a hospital stay, how painful was the surgery and recovery, are they good about pain management? Any information or suggestions would be great...

What are my chances MOT/ MSOT? current students please answer!
Here is my "academic/career" profile, those of you that have been accepted to MOT/ MSOT programs, please let me know what you think and if I have any chances. I'm worried because OT has been a recent discovery of mine, it hasn't been a dream of mine since a little girl, and to be honest-- I just stumbled upon this field about 6 months ago when I had my "quarter life" crisis after being rejected from clinical psychology programs. I plan to apply to programs beginning this August and into fall for admissions into programs beginning in 2013.
1)Graduated cum laude from UCSD in 2010 with a BS in Psychology...

Advice for an Arts graduate beginner, if you'd be so kind :)
Hi everyone,
I've been scouring these forums for about 6 months now, and I can't deal with the denial any more! I was hoping the desire to do medicine would fade, as the road seems so long and arduous. However, I really do think it's what I want to do, and it's time to make a plan - and your advice would be amazing :)
I have an English degree (starred First, top 10 uni) and am going to do my Master's (with a full scholarship) at Oxford next year. I applied for this last September, whilst still in the denial stage! However, I do enjoy English still, it is fascinating and I'm not going to turn down the opportunity to go to...

Best route for me?
Hey all,
So to get straight to the point, I've been strongly considering going after a career in medicine for the past 7-8months after I started doing some volunteer work at the children's hospital near me.
Now I've always loved working with people, and helping people but I don't have the grades to match what the university's want.
At school I wasn't exactly the best student, and only came out with some B's and rest C grades. B in Maths and English Language, C in English Lit, Science double award, Spanish and other unrelated subjects.
I also studied Software Development at college for 2 years, but towards the end of t...

All about autism.
I saw one article a year ago in newspaper titled autism indiana and I still remember something about it, which I would like to share here.
Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. Basically parents know about it when their child reaches two years of age, even so it's symptoms can be fairly noted at the early 12-14 months of their birth. Basically following types of symptoms can be noted in those children having autism.
1) Never smiling.
2) Difficulty in speaking fluently or late speaking.
3) Lack of interest to...

Advice Please.
Hi. I'm new to this site so please bare with me. I'm 27 years old and married with children. I will be starting college at a four year private college in September for the fall semester. Ever since I was young, I have always wanted to be a Dr. and I really can't see myself doing anything else. I love to take care of people and I'm just overall interested in the human body and how it works. The issue I'm having is knowing whether or not if Medical school and residency is doable while having family. I really want to eventually go to medical school and be a Dr., however at the same time, I don't want to miss soo much time wit...

the latest news on vertex 770
In this study, children with CF treated with VX-770 showed the same profound improvements in lung function seen in the recently-announced STRIVE study among an older group of people with the G551D mutation, said Robert Kauffman, M.D., Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Vertex. “We are committed to making VX-770 available as soon as possible and are moving ahead quickly with our U.S. and European applications for regulatory approval that we plan to submit in the second half of this year.

BBC Hospital Documentary (widening search to non doctor couples)
Hi,
I am writing from the BBC's Factual Entertainment Department. We make programmes like The Restaurant, Dragon's Den and, more recently, Junior Doctors (for BBC3).
A few days ago I posted about a new hospital documentary for BBC One that our department is currently developing for the channel. We are now looking to speak to all doctors (not just those who are in a relationship with other members of the medical profession) about how they balance a social/ home life with a demanding career.
We are keen to try to represent a rounded view of a doctor's life, so I am looking to speak to people about their everyday e...

CF Article for our local news letter
The Invisible Enemy
A normal morning, the sun rises and it's time for cereal and cartoons. The birds are singing and the dew settles onto the sharp blades of grass. Everything seems normal and peaceful. Normalcy is the illusion that keeps the family that is on the battlefield squaring off against CF sane. Cystic Fibrosis is an incurable genetic condition that dramatically shortens the lives of children and young adults by allowing thick mucus to form in their lungs. The thick mucus allows bacteria that do not affect normal lungs to colonize and create infection that slowly destroys lung tissues. Consequently, those affect...

Adopting a child with CF
Thank you all so much for your encouragement and support. This is a great group of people! I will look for those other discussions Chris, sounds interesting. I would love to connect with your friend Gemma. I will look into that. My thoughts exactly Liza! I want to go for it. His medical issue is rated as moderate, and she has a mild rating emotionally. Otherwise there are no developmental or psychological issues. I don't know all their history yet though.
Thanks again everyone!!! Oh, one more thing. I do work nights 7p-7a, full time right now, hoping to go part time soon... Any suggestions on how to do our treatment regim...

What do you do to discourage pseudomonas while keeping your child happily "normal"?
Hi Edan,
This is such a tough question and there are opinions about this across the board. But I can give you my ideas about what has worked for us and what I know about healthy child development.
So, first of all, as much as we try, we can't avoid our child getting pseud. My son got it at age 2, even though we were quite paranoid about bugs early on with him as many "newly diagnosed parents" understandably are. And my daughter, now age 9, has never had a culture with it yet and we were alot more relaxed with her. Go figure. Pseud is everywhere. That being said, we can certainly be prudent about what we allow our childr...
