Article: "Shadowing: Thinking outside the [clinical] box."
The interviewer solemnly looked down at the papers scattered before him. Interrupting his own seemingly deep thought, he quickly glanced up at the nervous applicant, "I see that you have 10 hours of formal physician shadowing." After taking in a breath that was perceivably deeper than before, he continued, "So, tell me, do you feel that was enough exposure? Are you confident that those 10 hours were representative of the profession, representative enough for you to validly spend the rest of your life on this journey through medicine? Did those 10 hours render the entire spectrum of medicine [from the highest...

"Why dentistry?" Question
Okay, so I decided to make a separate thread about this. I couldn't find a thread that really matched what I'm going for, so bear with me.
I'm always hearing that people should come up with good reasons to answer the question "Why dentistry?"/"Why not medicine?" but I really don't think that's the case. I honestly think that there's no real answer to "why dentistry" that cannot apply to some specialty in medicine as well.
What I mean is, other than the whole "I love teeth!" or "I don't want to have to do a residency" thing (obviously!), but who is really going to say tha...

Would you recommend chelation therapy?
I sometimes get asked the question about the benefits of chelation therapy and my standard answer is that I have no knowledge that it works. A study has just been presented at the AHA however that does suggest a benefit but I wonder from the reporting of it whether it is fatally flawed and should never even have reached abstract stage?sadianhttp://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/05/health/chelation-therapy-shows-slight-benefit-in-heart-disease-clinical-trial.html?_r=0

Advice Please. Frustrated. Regret.
I do not know what to do anymore about my situation. In the beginning of my college career, my grades were not that great. This was due to my health problem. Now my grades have been better and my health issue hasn't been affecting me. I still have it but it isn't deterring me in school So I had put that in my pharmcas application and in some of my supplemental essays. I regret doing that now. I wanted to be honest, but that has been a huge mistake for me. I have gotten a few rejection letters already and when I call the schools they say that my health problem will not let me handle the stress of pharmacy school. I do not k...

Usefulness of a MD/MPH degree?
Hi everyone,
I was recently accepted into the Tulane University School of Medicine, and I am trying to decide whether or not to pursue the four year MD/MPH degree program there. I know a MPH degree will be useful to me because my future goal is to work with the WHO in developing countries to improve the health of rural communities. However, I also want to make sure I get into a good residency program (I'm thinking Emergency Medicine or Surgery at the moment) and I'm worried that the extra time needed for the MPH degree will take away from my regular MD studies and then later on hurt my USMLE Step 1 score. As well, I know...

Deadlines?
I know SOPHAS take 4-6 weeks to process an application, but does this mean I have to submit my SOPHAS application 4-6 weeks before the deadline, or I can submit the application to SOPHAS until the deadline?
i.e. If the deadline is Dec 1st, can I submit the application to SOPHAS any time before Dec 1st? Or do I have to submit it now, since it's four weeks until the 1st?

The Research Agrees: Smoking Is Really Bad for You
Four new studies offer powerful evidence of the dangers of smoking and the health benefits of quitting or not being exposed to secondhand smoke.
Smoking in the U.K. — Between 1996 amd 2001, the Million Women Study started following more than one million women aged 50 to 65 years of age. In a report published in the Lancet, trial investigators, including renowned epidemiologist Richard Peto, found that 12-year mortality was significantly higher in women with a history of smoking compared with women who never smoked (rate ratio 2.76, CI 2.71-2.81). Smokers, the authors calculated, lose 10 years of life. The good news ...
