Advice Please. Frustrated. Regret.
I do not know what to do anymore about my situation. In the beginning of my college career, my grades were not that great. This was due to my health problem. Now my grades have been better and my health issue hasn't been affecting me. I still have it but it isn't deterring me in school So I had put that in my pharmcas application and in some of my supplemental essays. I regret doing that now. I wanted to be honest, but that has been a huge mistake for me. I have gotten a few rejection letters already and when I call the schools they say that my health problem will not let me handle the stress of pharmacy school. I do not k...

Usefulness of a MD/MPH degree?
Hi everyone, I was recently accepted into the Tulane University School of Medicine, and I am trying to decide whether or not to pursue the four year MD/MPH degree program there. I know a MPH degree will be useful to me because my future goal is to work with the WHO in developing countries to improve the health of rural communities. However, I also want to make sure I get into a good residency program (I'm thinking Emergency Medicine or Surgery at the moment) and I'm worried that the extra time needed for the MPH degree will take away from my regular MD studies and then later on hurt my USMLE Step 1 score. As well, I know...

Deadlines?
I know SOPHAS take 4-6 weeks to process an application, but does this mean I have to submit my SOPHAS application 4-6 weeks before the deadline, or I can submit the application to SOPHAS until the deadline? i.e. If the deadline is Dec 1st, can I submit the application to SOPHAS any time before Dec 1st? Or do I have to submit it now, since it's four weeks until the 1st?

The Research Agrees: Smoking Is Really Bad for You
Four new studies offer powerful evidence of the dangers of smoking and the health benefits of quitting or not being exposed to secondhand smoke. Smoking in the U.K. — Between 1996 amd 2001, the Million Women Study started following more than one million women aged 50 to 65 years of age. In  a report published in the Lancet, trial investigators, including renowned epidemiologist Richard Peto, found that 12-year mortality was significantly higher in women with a history of smoking compared with women who never smoked (rate ratio 2.76, CI 2.71-2.81). Smokers, the authors calculated, lose 10 years of life. The good news ...

Applying to Dental School during Sophomore Summer
Hey guys, I was thinking of applying to dental schools in my state (Pennsylvania) during my sophomore summer. I understand that there's very small minority of 3rd years that get accepted, but thought it would be worth a shot and was wondering whether Temple / Pitt / UPenn accepted such applicants. If I can get in, then that would be great, but realistically, I know that I should be prepared to apply again my junior summer and am willing to do so. I've tried speaking with my pre-health advisor, but he stated that he the above dental schools do not accept 3rd year applicants and strongly advised against doing such as den...

Master's in Biology or Masters in Public Health before applying?
I just graduated, and for most of my undergraduate time I didn't care about anything/mostly wasted my time playing video games. My entire last year I sort of cleaned up my act and was able to get a +3.5 GPA for all 4 quarters, but that still doesn't bring up my total GPA to a 3.0 (its more of a 2.94). Now I am debating on: 1.) Getting an M.S. in Biology with a focus in ecology/marine biology mainly because that's the only thing I can do right now with the coursework I have taken. 2.) Getting a Master's in Public Health I also need to take some pre-req coursework like organic chemistry because my undergraduate major di...

MPH International MPH @ UQ, Australia
I am an American currently residing in Australia with my Aussie boyfriend on a one year student-work visa, which expires in two months. I was going to apply to medical school, but have had a change of mind -- during the last eight months I've spent studying for the MCAT here in Australia through an online Kaplan course-- which has lead me to the MPH degree. I'm currently terrified and skeptical about going to medical school, even though I've spent the last five years after undergrad taking pre-reqs. MPH just seemed to fit right in the middle of sacrifice and completely giving up, and I just felt excited about the lecture t...

Ineligible to volunteer and questions about my clincal ECs
So I just found out I might possibly have an active form of TB. If I find out I need to take the drug treatments this may make me ineligible to volunteer for up to 6 months aka the rest of my last and senior year and before I apply in June. If this is the case, I might have to depend on my past clinical ECs, but I'm wondering if they're "clinical enough." I worked at a primary care practice and did the following: -Entered in patient and lab information -Talked to patients about accessing their health records and results -Greeted patients and told them where to check in and when they were ready to come in -Re-sto...

I don't know what to do
So I woke up this morning, and the right side of my mouth is weak. I have no idea why, when I tried to brush my teeth and hold water in to swish in my mouth, it comes spurting out the right side because my lips can't hold it in. I'm sorta freaking out. I made a doctors appointment for 3 hours from now, but I needed to ask somewhere. This forum doesn't seem too active so I have no idea if I'll even get an answer today or before I leave but I needed to say something. I do hope someone can tell me if it could be something minor or serious.
