Chronic pain, opiates, and working?
I have a unique situation being that I'm 28 years old and suffering from chronic pain. I have confirmed bulging discs in my neck with bone spurs, degenerative disc disease, torn right hip labrum, post-op for left hip labral tear, and hypermobility syndrome. If you've never torn your hip labrum, it can be incredibly painful and disabling. It has made me couch-bound for the past few years. I could barely walk around to even do the household chores :(
I've had two surgeries on my hips, and will be needing another one in a few months. I have been going through this for the past 4 years, so I'm hoping this is the last hip sur...

Rank these Ec's from most meaningful to least meaningful:
These aren't necessary my Ec's. These are just common ones. This would be a good reference to pre-meds.
1: Volunteering in a free clinic and having patient interaction
2. 2 published papers in a medical journal (2nd author)
3. EMT certification with hours
4. Shadowing
5. Long community Health screens-Blood pressure/sugar, cholesterol and consulting patients about their health based on those stats (Direct Patient interaction)
6. Laboratory assistant for a professor (published paper; not the first/second author; not a big contribution to the paper).
7. Multiple physician (5+) letters of recommendation from your work in t...

Is cardiac rehab a soft target?
I was at a meeting recently and learnt that the commissioning of cardiac rehab is moving to Health and Wellbeing boards - I can see some logic in this but for me the commissioning of a complete patient pathway should be overseen by the same group. I'm disturbed therefore to see this articlehttp://heart.bmj.com/content/early/2013/02/05/heartjnl-2012-303341.full?ath_user=nhsskhan016&ath_ttok=%3CURK%2FyKMVgLP6Hua5kw%3Ewhich seems to suggest that cardiac rehab as we know it is not fit for purpose. As someone who spent a few hours trying to get patients to do the same times on a treadmill within a few days to include ...

Continued knee pain after arthroscopic surgery
Hello,
I am a 26 year old male (and competitive athlete) and had surgery over a year ago to remove a piece of torn meniscus on the medial aspect of my left knee. Surgery went well and after I spent about a week or so gently walking around, trying to break up scar tissue and get back my ROM. However, the pain never seemed to fully subside. After months of constant, nagging pain I continued to do rehab and strengthening exercises. I went to another sports medicine/ortho doc and x-rays/movement tests were performed. From the x-rays, he believed it to just be an onset of early arthritis. He never performed an MRI and told me ...

UVM Post-Bacc
Just got my acceptance to UVM's post-bacc program and I'm looking into that along with Hopkins and Northwestern. I am really interested in going D.O, mostly because I believe that OMM has a place in medicine today and can be really beneficial to patients. I am a recent grad, will be going post-bacc right after a health and business degree and spending my entire undergraduate career working as an EMT (which is what really drove me to medicine). I have a 3.3 GPA in one a top-ranked business school, ECs in philanthropy, greek life and campus EMS, and only 1 science course to boot. Anyone have an opinion on whether UVM would b...

Should I send a Psych GRE score to schools that don't require it?
I have a bachelor in music and will have only taken six or seven psych courses (most at community college) by the time I apply for clinical and counseling PhD programs this winter. I am planning on taking the psych GRE because I think that if I do well, it will (hopefully) prove that I know my stuff. My question is whether I should send the psych GRE scores to schools that don't require them (nor even say that they recommend them). Does anybody have any thoughts on this? I realize that it will be expensive, but I think that lacking BA/BS in psych puts me at a bit of a disadvantage.
And for those who are interested, I'm pa...

Sharp temple pain and blurred vision
Hi! I am a 27 year old female. Healthy, to my knowledge. I am a server in a very fast paced fine dining restaurant. Last night while working, I started to get a sharp pain in my left temple, accompanied by blurred vision. I was seeing white, as if I was going to pass out. It continued for about an hour followed by severe nausea. It is now over a day later, and I woke up from a nap with blurred vision again. My eyes are extremely watery, but not dripping. It's more of a discharge at the bottom of my eye. The pain is just now coming back. I'm very concerned, and wondering if I should go see an eye doctor or my regular md? I ...
