Columbia combined program
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Columbia's PRS program. I know they have a fellowship, but I am confused as to if they have a combined program for a PGY-1 spot. All of the integrated match lists only refer to NY Presbyterian-Cornell, with no direct mention of Columbia (FREIDA is the same way, no Columbia mention). The the Columbia website says they have one PGY-1 spot each year though. Is that part of the NYP-Cornell program? I'm asking because I would like to know if doing an away rotation there would be an audition rotation, or just an experience where I could learn some things and get a letter but not pote...

Plastic surgery before interviews?
Hi there. Happy New Year.
I'm considering getting cosmetic plastic surgery after I finish school in June and when I turn my apps in, so around July/August. It might not fully be healed by the time the interview rolls around, so my question is whether or not bruising/swelling in the face would be a red flag during interviews? Would the interviewer even ask?
I feel like it's either now or wait until after residency to do it, it's still going to be tough when I'm 35 and married to your job. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

PRS Subscription & blog info
hey everyone!
just found out that if you call the publisher for PRS (Wolters Kluwer I think?) you can get a medical student rate for PRS, where you get the printed copies and online access for ~$200. I don't remember the exact amount. I wish I had known this before sub-internships because I like having the actual journal available to read, and easier access online than the way our library does it.
also the resident blog on the PRS website is pretty cool and has some good insight into resident life.
just sharing these discoveries with those out there interested in PRS! (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Other Help & advice needed
Hi all
I have completed my MBBS from a medical college in Saudi Arabia and ive started my internship last month. I have almost a year to go and in the meantime I am going crazy coz i dont know what to do after this.
I have always dreamed of being a plastic surgeon and it was my mothers dream as well (May she RIP) I have spoken to a few people and they have given me mixed views and keep saying its competitive and I should choose something easier like medicine or pediatrics. I dont want to compromise in life especially when it is related to such a huge thing ! I had thought of giving my USMLE exams after 6 months but I don...

Some advice
Hey all,
I'm a FMG re-applying for this year's match asking for some advice on what I need to do for this year's match.
My stats:
Step 1-244, Step 2CK-261, Step 2 CS pass first time. Yet to take Step 3. Good scores in medical school. 8 weeks of clerkships at Mount Sinai in General and Plastic Surgery. 3 good(but definitely not stellar) letters of recommendation from US surgeons. Graduated in August 2011. ECFMG certified.
Basically I applied for 99 G Surg programs in last year's match and got 3 prelim invites from Community hospitals. I turned them down as I did not want to do a prelim year. I was not ECFMG certified l...

STEP 1 Score for Harvard and John Hopkins
Hello there!
I was wondering about the score, that would most certainly lead to a match in neurology, internal medicine, psychiatry or plastic surgery in either Harvard or John Hopkins...Does anybody know what the minimum score might be? I am an international student from Munich! I have some research and pretty good grades, but unfortunately no paper yet...How important is a paper or a journal entry actually for the match system?
Thank you very much in advance for your responces :) (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Need Help Finding proper course
Hello all,
I am currently doing my third year of surgery residence in Mexico. I am interested in doing my postgraduate residency in England, on plastic and reconstructive surgery. I have recently started doing research online, but I honestly am having a difficult time finding universities with such a program. I am guessing I am not using the proper terms. For example the first search result was Queen Mary University of London, which has an Aesthetic Plastic Surgery course. The requirements say you have to be a plastic surgery graduate, but then which course would that be? And what is the name of it?
Can someone please hel...

How Much Do Plastic Surgeons Make ?
When it comes to a question such as how much do plastic surgeons make? There are some factors that affect the amount of money these surgeons can make. Plastic surgery is getting more and more popular. Most people are not satisfied with their appearance so that they want to enhance their appearance through this procedure. Speaking about plastic surgeons, this profession is known as the highest paid doctor. However, people should realize that the path of becoming as a plastic surgeon is demanding and long. Those who want to become as a plastic surgeon should complete many levels of training and one of them is to get a bachel...

Why can't foreign students do plastic surgery residency?
''Foreign Medical Graduates must have full training in general surgery, i.e., Board Eligible, as determined by the American Board of Surgery, before starting training in Plastic Surgery. ''
Why is that? Does it mean that the only option is to do GS and then plastics in Usa, GS in my homecountry and then plastics fellowship Usa, can't FMG's take the intergrated route? (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Making decisions for my college admissions result 2011-2012
Hi, I am a newby to SND, and I was wondering if anyone of similar career track help me clarify my decision for the 2011-2012 college admission result.
Accelerated Medical Track
I've recently got an offer from RPI-AMC 7yr Physician-Scientist Program, and it was the only accelerated medical program I have been admitted from 8 different programs I've applied this year. Supposedly the RPI-AMC program admitted 20 students this year, and it requires 3.4 GPA maintenance and no MCAT to continue to the medical track at AMC. I am thinking of becoming a plastic surgeon once I get my M.D.

I have gone back to school, and am taking pre-med classes. I also volunteered for a few of months, after which the hospital offered me a job and hired me on. Here are my stats:

Most Competitive Residencies and Why?
I couldn't find any post recent enough that was of the same content, so I felt it was acceptable to start a new thread on the issue. If I overlooked one that is recent, then I sincerely apologize and please direct me there.
First off I want to preface the question and my interest by saying I am a long shot for getting into a med school, and therefore I expect I would be a long shot for any competitive residency. Obviously if I can't get into medical school, this topic is worthless in relation to me, but I am going to assume that I do get in/I want to take it into consideration with applying to medical school and consideri...

I want to be a plastic and reconstructive surgeon
I’ve always had an interest in medical stuff. Even as a little kid I loved to watch surgery on TV. My mother thinks being a surgeon is gross. She had a couple bad nose jobs. She also had a deformed ear “fixed” but it looks exactly the same. When I was 15 she tried to make me get a breast reduction, I’m a F cup. She drug me to a bunch of surgeons. I never got it and I hated that she was trying to force me to have it. But during all this a part of me still found it fascinating. I don’t care about making 6 figures. I would be perfectly happy just making 30k a year. I’ve always just found st...

Can a foreign trained plastic surgeon practice in the UK?
I'm currently doing a graduate degree in burn and plastic surgery at the West China Medical School in Sichuan. Would I still have to go through F1,F2 and general surgery to get into my field back in the UK? (I am a UK citizen, with a Chinese medical license)
I'll probably end up coming back to China, but I would like the experience of working/training in the UK while hopefully making at least enough to live on. What sort of options are there? (Source: New Media Medicine)

Interested in a career as an ENT surgeon.
Hi all,
I'm a graduate student applying to GEP programs in the U.K.
As a pre-med, I undertook a surgical internship and most enjoyed ENT surgery, and shadowed a great ENT surgeon, getting as much O.R. time as I could during thyroidectomies etc.
One aspect of the field that also appealed to me was superficial facial reconstruction (i.e. not mxf) bordering on plastic surgery. I was wondering whether in the U.K. a surgeon can specialize in ENT as well as Facial Plastic Surgery?
Any advice on how to try and secure a career in ENT surgery from the very start would be very helpful to me. Thanks! (Source: New Media Medicine)
