Mammograms after Mastectomy and Breast Reconstruction - Are They Really Needed?

"Do I still need to have mammograms after my mastectomy and breast reconstruction?" I'm asked this question quite often. The truth is there's a lot of ongoing debate about this. Some doctors feel that since there is no "natural" breast tissue left, there is no need to continue monitoring patients. I disagree with this strongly. Breast cancer can come back after mastectomy - there's a 6.7% chance in fact. Breast reconstruction does not increase or decrease the risk of recurrence at all - the recurrence rate is the same whether women have reconstruction or not. Since the risk of breast cancer recurrence is a real one, surely...

Even gold winning Olympic athletes desire to look young forever. Bruce Jenner is the representation that no matter how physically fit you may be, the aging process does catch up to you. Twenty five years ago, Bruce was ill-advised to have a partial facelift and rhinoplasty. The results from the procedures were not what Bruce desired and as a result he recently went in for a correctional surgery. This time he received a full facelift and is pleased with the results. Cosmetic surgery is not something to take lightly and patients and physicians should strive to get it right the first time. Many cosmetic surgeons have patients...

Question
My girlfriend is absolutely determined to increase her bust size because she feels she is too small. She has been planning to get implants for some time.
I want to know if there are any safe ways to improve bust size without invasive surgery. What is your opinion of 'miracle' herbal growth pills (hormone regulators)?
Do they need to be taken indefinitely or do they have a lasting effect afterwards? What is the most effective and trustworthy of these products?
Answer
There are no herbal pills, cereal bars or creams and lotions that increase bust size.

New York doctor comrades, I feel your pain! On July 14, all medical offices in New York performing surgery requiring anything other then local anesthesia will have to be accredited by one of the major ambulatory surgery regulatory boards. While this is imminently logical, it does create special problems in an older city like New York with mostly preexisting structures and high real estate costs. Many physicians are scrambling to find places that can be brought up to code when they get the sticker shock for potential remodeling costs, assuming their current space can meet code at all (which may not be possible in some build...

I was inspired to choose a picture of the two-faced Roman god, Janus, to place next to this post. In ancient Rome, Janus was used to symbolize change and transitions, but also associated with the later metaphors of being two-faced or speaking out of both sides of your mouth. Our silver tongued commander in chief managed to do that very well in an anticipated speech before doctors today. In thee speech before members of the American Medical Association (AMA) today, President Obama was booed. What set that off? His position that any element of true tort reform for medical malpractice was off the table. Up to that point he was...

Wear sunblock and avoid excessive sun2. Don't smoke3. Hope that you inherited good genesSome other suggestions include: Apply Retin A or Retinol creams, drink lots of water, avoid too much alcohol and fast food, and exfoliate. So many classic childhood movies (Dumbo) and sing-a-longs (Do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro….) emphasize large and protruding ears. But it turns out that having protruding ears is often one of the most humiliating features for a teenager.According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery’s 2008 Procedural Survey, we found that 27.7% of otoplasties (a reshaping of the ear by placing small incision behind the ear then shaping or trimming the cartilage to define how and where the ear cartilage bends) are performed on those ages 13-19. Additionally, the survey found that otoplasty has the youngest mean a...

McAllen, Texas - America's failing experiment in health care cost control.

There's a collision course of sorts that's been playing out in medicine for the last 25 years. As the costs of health care have consumed more and more of GDP, the system has become unsustainable. Physician salaries bore the brunt of early cost containment with effective pay cuts of 50-60% in real income since the mid 1980's. More recently it's been the patients on the receiving end, with more employers dropping coverage and more people enrolled in high deductible/high copay plans. An article in the New Yorker Magazine, "The Cost Conundrum - What a Texas town can teach us about health care" profiles McAllen, Texas. The Times Publication has an outstanding article chronicling the story of Dr. Peter Normann, an Arizona-based Internal Medicine and Emergency Room specialist who masqueraded as a plastic surgeon. In a span of seven months three unsuspecting patients died under his care. The article highlights the unfortunate and shocking stores of several of his victims. It's a fascinating read. From the article:While the cosmetic horror stories described by the patients of Peter Normann represent some of the most egregious in the state's history, research shows they are part of a larger and growing danger of ill-equipped and inadequately ...

Has Haylie Duff had plastic surgery recently? It appears so. Check out the new photo on Celebrity Smack, and compare it to the photo here. She appears to have had a reduction genioplasty, or surgery to reduce the projection of the chin. Her nose also appears to have been tweaked via a rhinoplasty. Overall I think the nose looks great, but the chin may have ended up a bit on the smaller side. I'll be interested to see how she looks when more photos come out. Hopefully it won't be a PR disaster like her sister Hillary Duff's veneers. For the Celebrity Smack article, click here.Photo credit: prphotos (from 2007)Thanks for read...
