Advice on which SMP to choose.. LMU-DCOM or USC-South Carolina
Hi everyone, I am looking at two different SMP's and wondering which would be the best for me, given my stats, to gain admission to a D.O/M.D. program starting Fall 2014. First I will present my stats and then the programs I am looking at. I'm 24 with a B.S. in Biology. My overall GPA is a 3.25 and my science GPA is a 3.11. I have done 350 hrs shadowing physicians with 2 LOR (one MD and one DO) and 150 hrs volunteering in the ED. I have yet to take the MCAT, but am scheduled for June 20th, and plan to take at least 2 more times this summer (july & august). I have been studying through Kaplan test prep for a month and r...

2013 PharmD Interview for Western Univ of Health Sciences
Hellow! I finally got an interview at Western U (seriously after about 4 or 5 years of trying). It'll be in exactly 10 days from now. I'm a bit nervous. I don't know what to expect. I read their prospective student/interviewee webpage as they suggested. It says that there will be 3 people in the panel and that the questions are behavioral-based as opposed to academic. One thing I'm iffy about is whether or not I should steer away from mentioning that I am married with four children. I feel like this will go against me because the interview is their chance to find a student that will fit their hectic curriculum.
In those ye...

Should I retake Gen Bio I or wait until the Fall?
I'm so lost on what to do. I received a D in General Biology I lecture this fall. I passed all my other courses I took and got B's and A's in them. I feel like I'm such a disappointment for receiving that grade. I just don't know if I ruined my chances for getting into pharmacy school now.
The only General Biology I offered is 'online' around me because I live in the middle of no where right now and the private colleges are NOT offering it in the Spring. I really want to get into Wayne or University of Michigan and I'm wanting to apply for Fall 2014. I talked to a few colleges and they sounded like it was okay to take the...

Which Biology Labs Count?
Sorry, I've asked this question a few months ago, but I think people misinterpreted the question at the time.
For biology, I completed Molecular Biology and Cell Biology. However, due to high demand, the associated cell biology lab is impossible to get into (think about asking 2 years in advance) and the molecular biology lab is poorly taught (has awful reviews). Would some random labs in the biology department like "Nucleic Acids Lab" or "Electron Microscopy Lab" or something else fulfill the 2 biology lab requirements? How about "Microbiology", etc. I can take the "Molecular Biology La...

Cell Biology versus Biochemistry II for medical school prep
I am a senior (non-science major), and next semester I am planning on auditing either Cell Biology or the second semester of Biochem in preparation for medical school. I have already taken the MCAT, so this would be just for "fun," so to speak. I am in Biochemistry I right now. Which course do you recommend me taking that will serve me better in med school? Low GPA - What can I do?
Hi everyone,
Just found this board and after some time going through the wealth of information available already, decided to ask for some advice for my situation. I've recently decided that I want to pursue medical school without any reservations and am willing to do whatever is necessary to get to that point.
I attended a top 20 ranked university in the United States and graduated in 2012 with a degree in Molecular Cell Biology with a specialization in Neuroscience (cGPA 2.69, sGPA 2.52). Understandably, my GPA is a huge deterrent to getting into medical school, but I do think that there are a number of factors that ca...

2014 MCAT, do I only need the Few Four?
I'm wanting to take the MCAT in summer 2014. Since I'm not taking the updated version, should I only need the classes General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology, and Physics going to be enough to get me a good grade if I know those four subjects well? Assume I'll get a 15 on the Verbal Reasoning.
What do you think? If anything I will take a Genetics and Cell Biology course as well regardless. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

"Vinegar test" as alternative to cytology
I just heard a story on NPR about a clinical test that involves application of acetic acid to the cervix to identify precancerous lesions. The gist of the story was that this screening method was somehow more accurate than traditional cytology. Usually NPR is pretty good, but I have doubts about this claim. Anyone hear of this test? TPRH Science Workbook Topics
Hey guys,
So sometimes I see people posting that it's annoying that the TPRH workbook doesn't list what questions are for what topic in each subject, so I figured I'd post it. This is for the most recent edition of the workbook, but I suspect it's basically the same for the old ones.
q = questions, p = passages

US College Student Wants to Study Medicine in UK
Hello. I am currently in my third year at a prestigious university in the US and I am studying Biology. I am thinking of studying medicine in the UK since I am going to move there after I graduate from college (college and university is the same thing in the US). Now my question are:
1. How should a US applicant prepare to apply to medical school in the UK?
2. What should the gpa be?
3. I know that the medical schools expect US applicant to take AP exams but my high school did not offer the courses. However, I have taken upper level biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and calculus. I am also working on a Biol...

So, I thought it would be best to start a new thread rather than resurrecting a thread from the great beyond. I sincerely hope some of can provide me with your input in regard to what is discussed here.

I messed up my grades/future at a German university
Hi everyone. I have been "lurking" on SDN for several years now and finally decided to post something in case anyone has the time to give some feedback.
I have always wanted to be a doctor. I started college when I was 16 through a state-funded dual enrollment program but was a bit immature, and intsead of focusing on my biology classes, got a 4.0 in every single German course I took. I was obsessed with Germany. I kind of checked out and decided that I would just go to a German university once I graduated high school with two years of university under my belt and study "whatever." :thumbdown

Advice needed regarding LORs
So, I am currently having a dilemma about the Letter of Recommendation requirements.
It seems like most schools require you to have at least 2 LORs from science faculties that have taught you, and 1 LOR from non-science.
I have 1 from an English professor, 1 from a science faculty, and 2 LORs from doctors who I do clinical and research for.
What do I do with that 2nd LOR from science professor required for most med schools?!? Should I go ahead and ask LOR from a professor (upper division cell biology) who doesn't know me at all but I got an A+? I go to a UC school so every single one of my class has at least 150+ studen...

Spring 11: 3.78
Fall 11: 4.03
This spring and following semesters I am aiming for 4.0, and hopefully reaching around mid 3.8 by graduation.

Calling all Murdoch Vets and Pre-Vets :)
Hi everyone.
I'm enrolled in the pre-vet at Murdoch. Im currently in QLD and was wondering if the students currently enrolled in vet could tell me a bit about the campus and the program. What they enjoy/dislike, teaching, facilities, you name it I want to know about it :). I am getting most of my pre-vet courses exempt except for Cell Biology, the biology course I took doesn't meet their requirements...so I wont be heading to Murdoch until second semester.
This is the first forum I have really read with Murdoch vets in them. So I would really love to hear your experiences/thoughts about Murdoch :) (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Will these courses prepare me for the MCAT?
I'm a freshman in college majoring in biology. I want to make sure I'll get all the right courses in before the end of my junior year to be prepared for the MCAT. Per advice, there's lots of English in my schedule before the MCAT so I can keep up with the critical thinking involved on the MCAT. I'm aiming for a 32 at the least. I've compiled this schedule to be in line with my college's core curriculum, my major's curriculum, the MCAT suggested courses, and my medical school's required and suggested courses, so if something looks out-of-place, its for a pre-requisite (like Standard English Grammar), or my school's core (li...

Schedule difficulty -- possible to get As in all of these classes?

an undergrad research course -- i get 3 hours credit, but perform 15 hours of research per week.
Do either of these look particularly difficult? I'm mostly concerned with summer.

Books for sale
Hey guys,
Firstly, congratulations on securing a place at Leicester! Although there will be time for play, unfortunately you do have to read a few bits and pieces from time to time and that's where I come in; I've got loads of books from phase 1 (I'm now in phase 2, so they helped me get there), that I'm wanting to sell. Most are on the reading list or are pretty standard text books for most medical students e.g. crash course books which tbh, is all you need at that stage. If you are interested in any of the following, then let me know and we can negotiate prices. I know it seems too early to be thinking about books etc...

neglected Bio, Do the TBR books really help?
So, I am a bio major about to finish my senior year and prior to taking the mcat I had just finished a semester with biochem, biochem lab, human physiology, and neurobiology. Previously, I had also taken classes in cell biology and microbiology and bio was definitely my strong point (SO I THOUGHT) for the mcat. I was scoring highest on my practice tests in the bio section and at times I neglected studying to do more PS and VR since those were my weak areas but I ended up getting crushed on the real thing (8).
I was wondering how I should approach studying this time around. I used the TPR science book for PS, which I str...

For Sale Object Marker - Cell Dotter
Nikon makes an Object Marker/(Cell Dotter) for microscopes.
This is a cool little tool that allows you to place a small 1.8mm removable ink circle over the particular area of the specimen you are pinpointing. The Object Marker screws into your microscope's Nose piece like an objective, and spins into position when you're ready to use it.
The Object Marker is popular amongst Cytologists and is available online at the following link:Nikon Microscope (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

MD & DO Apply now or wait a year?
Hi guys,
I am currently building my application for the Spring 2011 application (Fall 2012 admission) and am contemplating whether it would be better to continue with the current application cycle or wait a year (or two). I would greatly appreciate your input in regard to this matter.
I had a poor experience with science at high school; therefore, I started off as a business major in college. During sophomore year, I decided to give science another try (so I do not have any regrets later in life), and I loved it. I continued to follow through with science classes while satisfying the requirements for my business major.

Just as background, last semester I had to deal with an unexpected medical issue and missed the week of classes just before my finals. I was already taking three heavy sciences including Organic and Physics.
Along with that I had to put several hours into two clubs (6-8 hours a week) and I was doing research. The illness was just the final blow and I had a pretty rough semester. I was able to frantically catch up in a few days and barely got through my finals. My GPA is stil...

Anyone else having regrets about this program? The program doesn't seem at all interested in making you a better applicant. Its just like theyre funneling students through as another means of income. It's almost impossible to find an advisor who would actually help you out or give you advice, they all seem to give one sentence replys and direct you elsewhere.
There's 100+ students in every graduating class, and about 3/4 will do the 1.5 year route... meaning 175+ people in the program each year and a LOT of people applying to dental/medical schools each year. I don't know what the success rate is... but from what I'm seei...

Right now I have planned out my courses so that I can finish all of my pre-reqs by the beginning of summer of my sophomore year.
