For years many libraries have relied upon Meebo as a tool to provide virtual reference services through instant message (IM) chat reference. The free service allowed libraries to respond to chat reference queries from a number of  IM service providers including Yahoo Messenger, MSN, Google Talk, AIM, and many more. Earlier this month Google acquired Meebo and soon after announced that the service will be shutting down as of July 11, 2012. Many libraries and librarians are now looking into alternative options to continue their IM reference services. While one solution will not work for all, the links below provide an overv...

Abstract I suspected I would not find this paper useful as soon as I read the purpose of the study stated in the abstract: ” . . .to better understand the use of whole bowel irrigation (WBI) in pediatric patients”. This goal is so vague and unfocused that it is essentially useless as a research question or basis for scientific inquiry. Generation of Plant Small RNA cDNA Libraries for High-Throughput Sequencingemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) are non-coding regulatory RNAs that play an important role in development and genome stability in plants. Conventional cloning and sequencing approaches have identified hundreds of miRNAs and a large number of siRNAs, but are no longer the best choices for identification of new miRNAs which are generally expressed at low abundance. The development of next-generation sequencing technologies has provided a powerful platform for the discovery of these small but vital RNA molecules. This chapter describes a protocol for the construction of small RNA cDNA libraries suitable...

Our increasing understanding of virus–host interactions is revealing a complex role for host factors during virus replication. Besides the role of some host proteins in defense against viruses, it is becoming clear that viruses also hijack several host functions to utilize them for their multiplication. Genome-wide screens using high-throughput methods are being conducted to identify most of the host factors affecting virus replication in a number of host–virus systems. For selected plant viruses, such as bromo- and tombusviruses, yeast has been developed as a model host, thus greatly accelerating genome-wide s...

Gene silencing has been used widely in gene function studies and crop plant modification. Long hairpin RNA (lhRNA) results in high efficiency of gene silencing; however, constructing multiple lhRNA vectors using traditional approaches is both time consuming and costly. Also, most of the existing approaches are based on sequence-specific cloning of individual sequences and are therefore not suitable for preparing hpRNA libraries from a pool of mixed target sequences. The rolling circle amplification (RCA)-mediated hairpin RNA (RMHR) construction system is suitable for generating hairpin libraries from any gene of interest o...
