Prevalence of low back pain in children and adolescents: a meta-analysis
Background:
Low back pain (LBP) is common in children and adolescents, and it is becoming a public health concern. In recent years there has been a considerable increase in research studies that examine the prevalence of LBP in this population, but studies exhibit great variability in the prevalence rates reported. The purpose of this research was to examine, by means of a meta-analytic investigation, the prevalence rates of LBP in children and adolescents.
Methods:
Studies were located from computerized databases (ISI Web of Knowledge, MedLine, PEDro, IME, LILACS, and CINAHL) and other sources. The search period extended ...

Tibia shaft fractures: costly burden of nonunions
Conclusions:
Nonunions in TSF's are associated with substantial healthcare resource use, common use of strong opioids, and high per-patient costs. Open fractures are associated with higher likelihood of nonunion. Effective screening of nonunion risk may decrease this morbidity and subsequent healthcare resource use and costs.

Sulfated small molecules targeting EBV in Burkitt lymphoma: from in silico screening to the evidence of in vitro effect on viral episomal DNA
Abstract
EBV infects more than 90% of the world population. Following primary infection, EBV persists in an asymptomatic latent state. Occasionally, it may switch to lytic infection. Latent EBV infection has been associated with several diseases, such as Burkitt lymphoma (BL). To date, there are no available drugs to target latent EBV and the existing broad spectrum antiviral drugs are mainly active against lytic viral infection. Thus, using computational molecular docking, a virtual screen of a library of small molecules, including xanthones and flavonoids (described with potential for antiviral activity against EBV), was...

The Royal Institution building should be saved for everyone | Tania Browne
Arguments abound at present over whether the financially troubled Royal Institution's historic premises should be saved. "It's OK," the Archbishop would say, "we'll still take the Church to the people who need it, it's only a building. We can just move. A novel aminoacid determinant of HIV-1 restriction in the TRIM5α variable 1 region isolated in a random mutagenic screen.
Abstract
Human-derived antiretroviral transgenes are of great biomedical interest and are actively pursued. HIV-1 is efficiently inhibited at post-entry, pre-integration replication stages by point mutations in the variable region 1 (v1) of the human restriction factor TRIM5α. Here we use a mutated megaprimer approach to create a mutant library of TRIM5α(Hu) v1 and to isolate a mutation at Gly330 (G330E) that inhibits transduction of an HIV-1 vector as efficiently as the previously described mutants at positions Arg332 and Arg335. As was the case for these other mutations, modification of the local v1 charge towa...

Polycyclic Peptide Therapeutics.
Abstract
Owing to their excellent binding properties, high stability, and low off-target toxicity, polycyclic peptides are an attractive molecule format for the development of therapeutics. Currently, only a handful of polycyclic peptides are used in the clinic; examples include the antibiotic vancomycin, the anticancer drugs actinomycin D and romidepsin, and the analgesic agent ziconotide. All clinically used polycyclic peptide drugs are derived from natural sources, such as soil bacteria in the case of vancomycin, actinomycin D and romidepsin, or the venom of a fish-hunting coil snail in the case of ziconotid...

Chromosomal Microarray Impacts Clinical Management.
Abstract
Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) is standard of care, first-tier clinical testing for detection of genomic copy number variation (CNV) among patients with developmental disabilities. Although diagnostic yield is higher than traditional cytogenetic testing, management impact has not been well studied. We surveyed genetic services providers regarding CMA ordering practices and perceptions about reimbursement. Lack of insurance coverage due to perceived lack of clinical utility was cited amongst the most frequent reasons why CMA was not ordered when warranted. We compiled a list of genomic regions where ...

Automatic Identification of Wet and Dry Cough in Pediatric Patients with Respiratory Diseases.
Abstract
Cough is the most common symptom of several respiratory diseases. It is a defense mechanism of the body to clear the respiratory tract from foreign materials inhaled accidentally or produced internally by infections. The identification of wet and dry cough is an important clinical finding, aiding in the differential diagnosis especially in children. Wet coughs are more likely to be associated with lower respiratory track bacterial infections. At present during a typical consultation session, the wet/dry decision is based on the subjective judgment of a physician. It is not available for the non-trained per...

Affinities of recombinant norovirus P dimers for human blood group antigens
Noroviruses (NoVs), the major cause of viral acute gastroenteritis, recognize histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) as receptors or attachment factors. To gain a deeper understanding of the interplay between NoVs and their hosts, the affinities of recombinant P dimers (P2's) of a GII.4 NoV (VA387) to a library of 41 soluble analogs of HBGAs were measured using the direct electrospray ionization mass spectrometry assay. The HBGAs contained the A, B, H and Lewis epitopes, with variable sizes (2–6 residues) and different types (1–6). The results reveal that the P2's exhibit a broad specificity for the HBGAs and bind ...

Evolution of Multisubstrate {beta}-Lactamase Activity [Enzymology]
The extensive use and misuse of antibiotics during the last seven decades has led to the evolution and global spread of a variety of resistance mechanisms in bacteria. Of high medical importance are β-lactamases, a group of enzymes inactivating β-lactam antibiotics. Metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) are particularly problematic because of their ability to act on virtually all classes of β-lactam antibiotics. An engineered MBL (evMBL9) characterized by low level activity with several β-lactam antibiotics was constructed and employed as a parental MBL in an experiment to examine how an enzyme can evolve toward increased activ...
