Are plant stem cells good for hair and skin?
Kris’s question…I am noticing that plant stem cells are popping up in a number of skin and hair care products recently. I cannot find much info as to any efficacy beyond marketing information from the companies of said products. Any information is appreciated! The Beauty Brains respond: Like bow ties in Dr. Who, stem cells are cool. Why stem cells are cool Stem cells are unique because a) they are able to create more of themselves (they have the property of self-renewal) and b) they are able to turn into other cells (they have the property of differentiation). Therefore these cells are able to play a major role...

Physician Payment Sunshine Act: Fraud and Abuse Implications of Sunshine
A recent article written by Kelly M. Cleary, a lawyer from Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, discussed some of the potential federal and state healthcare fraud issues that may be implicated by the Sunshine Act.  We previously wrote back in 2011 about these risks, but this update is timely and provides added analysis about potential implications for physicians, teaching hospitals, and applicable manufacturers.   Fraud and Abuse Implications of Sunshine  The Sunshine Act or “transparency initiative” is supposed to “allow patients to better understand the financial relationships their doctors may have with the d...

A Look at the OAS Report on Drug Policy in the Americas
Juan Carlos Hidalgo Last Friday, the Organization of American States released a groundbreaking report on the future of drug policy in the Americas. The OAS received the mandate to produce this document at the Summit of the Americas last year in Cartagena, Colombia, where some presidents aired their frustration with the war on drugs and even suggested legalization as an alternative to fight the cartels.   The document is based on solid premises: Drug violence is one of the greatest challenges facing the Americas The current approach is a failure isn’t working New policy alternatives need to be discussed and impleme...

I Hate to Say "I Told You So" II (Web Wiretap Edition)
Julian Sanchez I wrote recently in Wired about the many problems with an FBI proposal to require Internet providers to render their services more wiretap-friendly. Perhaps chief among these is the deleterious effect such a mandate would have on cybersecurity. This is so, first, because it would tend to push companies away from design choices that make a system more resilient or secure but harder to intercept. If you risk massive fines when you can’t cough up user communications, that’s a powerful incentive to prefer server-side over end-to-end encryption, centralized routing over peer-to-peer, and closed over ...

According to author Laura Vanderkam in her newest e-book What the Most Successful People Do At Work: A Short Guide to Making Over Your Career, the secret to “astonishing productivity” lies in daily disciplines. How To Know What You Really Want To Do In Life
For the past month I have been reading a book based on the life of Tulsidas, one of the greatest religious poets of India. He is credited with rewriting the Ramayana in "khadi boli" – the language of the common folks – so that people could easily sing the hymns and awaken the spirit of the great classic. The Ramayana is originally written in Sanskrit. In the book there is a disciple of Tulsidas, named Benimadhav, who himself is trying to write the story of his guru but somehow he is neither able to capture the true spirit of the story he is looking for, nor focus on the divine Rama. He is sulking and depressed all the...

They define working memory as “the conscious processing of information.” And in addition to inventing incredible innovations, working memory is critical for our daily lives. Conclusion  The increased regulation and requirements to disclose FCOIs creates a tremendous burden for researchers and institutions that are repetitive, overlapping but not-identical, and time-consuming.  Nevertheless, institutions that receive PHS funding can manage FCOIs in a number of ways: (1) public disclosure of the FCOI (e.g., when presenting or publishing the research); (2) disclosure of the FCOI directly to human participants; (3) appointment of an independent monitor capable of taking measures to protect the design, conduct, and reporting of the research against bias resulting from the FCOI; (4) modification ...
