Donor cycle and donor segmentation: new tools for improving blood donor management
ConclusionGood donor management depends on a thorough insight into the flow of donors through their donor career. Segmentation of the donor database is an essential tool to understand the influx and efflux of donors. The DOMAINE donor segmentation helps BEs in understanding their donor database and to adapt their donor recruitment and retention practices accordingly. Ways to use this new tool are proposed.

Computational construction of specialized biological networks.
Abstract Today we have access to more than 1500 molecular database systems inside the internet. Based on these databases and information systems, computer scientists developed and implemented different methods for the automatic integration and prediction of biological networks. The idea is to use such methods for the automatic prediction and expansion of rudimentary molecular knowledge. However, the inherent data deficiency problem concerning the properties of specialized network hampers the database- and text-mining-based network construction. This paper presents the concept concerning the computational network ex...

Subcellular localization charts: a new visual methodology for the semi-automatic localization of protein-related data sets.
Abstract The CELLmicrocosmos PathwayIntegration (CmPI) was developed to support and visualize the subcellular localization prediction of protein-related data such as protein-interaction networks. From the start it was possible to manually analyze the localizations by using an interactive table. It was, however, quite complicated to compare and analyze the different localization results derived from data integration as well as text-mining-based databases. The current software release provides a new interactive visual workflow, the Subcellular Localization Charts. As an application case, a MUPP1-related protein-prote...

Dispom: a discriminative de-novo motif discovery tool based on the jstacs library.
Abstract DNA-binding proteins are a main component of gene regulation as they activate or repress gene expression by binding to specific binding sites in target regions of genomic DNA. However, de-novo discovery of these binding sites in target regions obtained by wet-lab experiments is a challenging problem in computational biology, which has not yet been solved satisfactorily. Here, we present a detailed description and analysis of the de-novo motif discovery tool Dispom, which has been developed for finding binding sites of DNA-binding proteins that are differentially abundant in a set of target regions compare...

Motif discovery with data mining in 3d protein structure databases: discovery, validation and prediction of the u-shape zinc binding ("huf-zinc") motif.
Abstract Data mining in protein databases, derivatives from more fundamental protein 3D structure and sequence databases, has considerable unearthed potential for the discovery of sequence motif-structural motif-function relationships as the finding of the U-shape (Huf-Zinc) motif, originally a small student's project, exemplifies. The metal ion zinc is critically involved in universal biological processes, ranging from protein-DNA complexes and transcription regulation to enzymatic catalysis and metabolic pathways. Proteins have evolved a series of motifs to specifically recognize and bind zinc ions. Many of these...

Violent video games and the Supreme Court: Lessons for the scientific community in the wake of Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association.
Abstract In June 2011 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that video games enjoy full free speech protections and that the regulation of violent game sales to minors is unconstitutional. The Supreme Court also referred to psychological research on violent video games as "unpersuasive" and noted that such research contains many methodological flaws. Recent reviews in many scholarly journals have come to similar conclusions, although much debate continues. Given past statements by the American Psychological Association linking video game and media violence with aggression, the Supreme Court ruling, particularly its critique...

A more optimistic perspective on government-supported marriage and relationship education programs for lower income couples.
Abstract Comments on the original article by Matthew D. Johnson (see record 2012-08242-001). It is important to challenge some of Johnson's points about the effectiveness and reach of interventions to lower income couples and couples of color and his suggested prioritization of basic over applied research. With emerging findings and practical knowledge gained in lower income communities from all across the United States over the past decade, we see evidence to support optimism for the potential utility of marriage and relationship education (MRE) programs to help disadvantaged and minority couples. Accordingly, con...

A review of the foot function index and the foot function index ¿ revised
Conclusion: This review was limited to articles published in English in the past twenty years. FFI is used extensively worldwide; this instrument pioneered a quantifiable measure of foot health, and thus has shifted the paradigm of outcome measure to subjective, patient-centered, valid, reliable and responsive hard data endpoints. Edited FFI-R into four response categories will enhance its user friendliness for measuring foot health.

Abstract The aim of this review is to evaluate the impact of sleep on breast cancer risk. Given the supposed protective role played by melatonin in breast cancer, it is interesting to study the effect of sleep, which is the moment of melatonin synthesis. Articles were extracted from the PUBMED database between 2000 and 2012 with the following keywords "sleep duration", "sleep quality", "breast cancer risk" and "melatonin". In total, 10 articles were selected. Most prospective cohort studies found a decrease in the risk of breast cancer varying from 38 to 72% for "long sleepers". Furthermore, a meta-analysis of the ...
