What Is A Dental Abscess? What Causes Dental Abscesses?email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
A dental abscess, or tooth abscess, is an accumulation of pus that forms inside the teeth or gums. The abscess typically originates from a bacterial infection, often one that has accumulated in the soft pulp of the tooth. Bacteria exist in plaque, a by-product of food, saliva and bacteria in the mouth which sticks to the teeth and damages them, as well as the gums. (Source: Dentistry News From Medical News Today)

Hybrid Composite For Root Canal Treatmentemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Unrelenting toothache means a visit to the dentist is inevitable, and if the tooth decay is really bad root canal treatment is often the only option. The dentist first removes the nerve completely and then closes the ensuing canal with a filler. This must be airtight to prevent bacteria from entering and causing renewed inflammation. On the other hand, the material must also be removable. (Source: Dentistry News From Medical News Today)

Conclusions Silver/tin alloy and gold powder imparted the necessary radiopacity to a calcium silicate-based cement. Barium sulphate was also a suitable radiopacifier together with a lower concentration of silver/tin alloy and gold powder that achieved the radiodensity recommended by ISO 6876. Further research is required to investigate the broader properties of the calcium silicate-based cement with the different radiopacifiers. (Source: International Endodontic Journal)

Stability values of titanium dioxide-blasted dental implants in edentulous maxillas: a 3-year pilot studyemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Summary The purpose of this follow-up study was to measure the resonance frequency of Astra Tech TiO2 blasted implants at second surgery, at one and 3 years of loading. Secondly, it was investigated whether resonance frequency at second surgery could discriminate between successful implants and those that will fail over a 3-year period. Fifty titanium dioxide-blasted implants in eight consecutive patients with edentulous maxillas seeking fixed rehabilitations, were included in the study at abutment connection after 6 months of healing. Resonance frequency, clinical and radiographic records were obtained at abutment connect...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the strain and temperature change in dentin induced by laser irradiation of human root canals with or without water cooling. Twenty-eight palatal roots of extracted human maxillary first molars were used. The strain in dentin was measured using strain gauges fixed on the apical third of the buccal root surface. The temperature change of the root dentin was monitored using thermocouples embedded into dentin near the apex. The root canal was irradiated with Er:YAG or Nd:YAG laser at an output of 1 W (100 mJ, 10 pps) for 5 s. The tip of the irradiation fibre was located 2.0 mm from...

They were irrigated, dried with paper points and transferred into 1 mL of simulated leakage (Enterococcus faecalis in tryptic soy broth) every 24 h. After one, two or three transfers, the number of colony forming units was measured by drilling the canal space and recovering the dentine shavings in antimicrobial-inactivating broth. Two-way anova of the log-transformed data showed irrigation method, leakage ...

An intraoral luting technique between electroformed gold copings and a metallic framework for a cement-retained, implant-supported metal-resin-fixed complete-denture is presented. As a consequence, the conventional thick prosthesis margin (electroformed copings, cement for the luting phase, framework) was modified into a thin electroformed prosthesis seal (0.3 mm) just beyond the apical limit of the esthetic material. Abstract  The aim of this study was to compare the histologic response elicited by repairing furcal perforations with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and a new endodontic material in the name of “calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement” in dogs’ teeth. Thirty-four premolars were randomly divided into four groups: MTA (n = 15), CEM (n = 15), positive, and negative controls (n = 4). Root canal therapy were carried out; perforations were made, and the furcation areas were then repaired with MTA or CEM cement. The animals were sacrificed after 3 months. Conclusions: Swelling of the parotid gland following use of a mouthwash has previously been reported, although previous reports found this side effect only in patients who used chlorhexidine mouthwashes. This complication has therefore been informally linked to chlorhexidine. The present case report questions this hypothesis and suggests that parotid gland swelling may not be related to the type of mouthwash used, but may instead be a consequence of the rinsing action itself. The value of chlorhexidine in clinical dentistry has led to many applications, including varnishes, mouthwashes, sprays, chewing gums, and dentifrices. However, at some common concentrations, it can cause staining, especially in orthodontic patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether a lower concentration of chlorhexidine in dentifrices (0.50% or 0.75%) could reduce the risk of tooth staining without compromising its effectiveness for gingivitis, bleeding, and plaque prevention. For the best possible results, this was a double-blind, randomized controlled trial. Fulfilling the inclusion criteria, 81 volunteers...

However, no systematic study has quantified technique accuracy to reliably predict the surgical risks. Ten drill-free screws (DFS) were placed by using the G-RSG. The central point of the mesiodistal septum width (SW) was the selected implant site on the presurgical radiograph. The distanc...

Chemical composition of enamel surface as a predictor of in-vitro shear bond strengthemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions: The chemical composition of the buccal surface of maxillary first premolars was not significant in predicting in-vitro mean shear bond strength. Other factors are likely to be important contributors to the large variations frequently seen in bond strength studies. (Source: American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics)

Interceptive treatment of palatal impaction of maxillary canines with rapid maxillary expansion: A randomized clinical trialemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Introduction: Our aim in this prospective randomized clinical study was to assess the prevalence rate of eruption of palatally displaced canines, diagnosed at an early developmental stage with posteroanterior radiographs and consequently treated by rapid maxillary expansion. Methods: A sample of 60 subjects in the early mixed dentition with palatally displaced canines diagnosed on posteroanterior radiographs was enrolled in the trial. Their age range at the first observation (T1) was 7.6 to 9.6 years, with a prepubertal stage of skeletal maturity (CS1 or CS2). The 60 subjects were randomly allocated to the treatment group (...
