Effectiveness of arginine-containing toothpastes in treating dentine hypersensitivity: A systematic review
Conclusion Data identified indicates a potential role for arginine-containing toothpastes in managing dentine hypersensitivity. However, this conclusion is based on small sample sizes and the studies identified did not follow patients up in the medium to long term. The authors recommend that there is a need for well-designed RCTs to be conducted prior to any definitive recommendations being made. Clinical significance Dentine hypersensitivity is a common condition. Its multi-factorial aetiology has led to several treatment modalities being advocated. The continued introduction of new desensitising agents suggests that no ...

Self-perceived changes in oral health-related quality of life after receiving different types of conventional prosthetic treatments: A cohort follow-up study
Conclusions Patients perceived benefits in chewing ability, aesthetics and satisfaction with their mouth after receiving conventional dental prostheses. Clinical significance Conventional prosthetic therapy enhances patients’ overall well-being although it can cause discomfort and chewing dysfunction in more than 20% of subjects. Metal-based removable partial dentures are the most predictable in terms of patient satisfaction. The higher the clinical impairment felt by patients, the higher the increase in OHRQoL after rehabilitation. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

MMPs activity and bond strength in deciduous dentine–resin bonded interfaces
Conclusions Higher collagenollytic activity is found in deciduous than in permanent dentine. At 24h, collagen cleavage by MMPs at the hybrid layer is higher in deciduous dentine leading to a lower MTBS. Clinical significance The presence of resin monomers reduced collagen degradation when applied on demineralized dentine, but exerted protection was lower in deciduous dentine. Influence of various irradiation processes on the mechanical properties and polymerization kinetics of Bulk-fill resin based composites
Conclusions Both materials enable at least 4mm thick increments to be cured in one step under clinically relevant curing conditions. Clinical Significance: The susceptibility to variation in irradiance was material dependent, thus properties measured under clinically simulated curing conditions might vary to a different extent from those measured under ideal curing conditions. Evaluation of an anatomic dual-laminate composite resin shade guide
Conclusions The use of Miris2 prefabricated anatomic dual-laminate shade guide with interposition of water or glycerin between the enamel–dentine tabs demonstrated acceptable ΔE values when compared to Vitapan Classical and custom guides. A chart for matching Vita shades with various combinations of Miris2 enamel/dentine shades was produced to assist the clinician in obtaining acceptable restorations. Clinical significance The prefabricated anatomic dual-laminate shade guide is as efficient as a custom shade guide, facilitating clinical steps and saving material when doing composite resin restorations. Investigation of Biodentine as dentine replacement material
Conclusions Biodentine demonstrated both structural and chemical changes when etched with 37% phosphoric acid. Biodentine exhibited a lower calcium to silicon ratio and a reduction in the chloride peak height when etched. When used as a dentine replacement material in the sandwich technique overlayed with composite, significant leakage occurred at the dentine to material interface. On the other hand materials based on glass ionomer cement were etched successfully and no chemical and physical changes or micro-leakage were detected when the materials were used as bases under composite restorations. The micro-hardness of all ...

Failure of incompletely excavated teeth—A systematic review
Conclusions After incomplete removal of deep caries, pulpal failure was more common. One- compared with two-step excavation reduces risk of failure, and factors like number of restored surfaces seem to but influence failure, but limited evidence permits drawing definitive conclusions. Clinical Significance Growing evidence indicates that one-step incomplete excavation seems suitable to treat deep caries lesions, and might have advantages compared to two-step incomplete or complete caries removal. However, it is too early to recommend certain clinical strategies. (Source: Journal of Dentistry)

Various irrigation protocols for final rinse to improve bond strengths of fiber posts inside the root canal
Irrigation after post space preparation and its effects on the bond strength of different adhesive strategies are still an issue of interest. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of various irrigation protocols (IPs) on the push‐out bond strengths of fiber posts. One‐hundred and fifty extracted human anterior teeth were divided into three groups (n = 50 each) and endodontically treated. The post space was irrigated before post placement using the following five IPs in each group: IP1 (control): 5 ml of distilled water; IP2: 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) applied with passive ultrasonic irri...

Effects of directly autotransplanted tibial bone marrow aspirates on bone regeneration and osseointegration of dental implants
ConclusionDirectly autotransplanted tibial BM aspirates did not show beneficial regenerative effects in the small study population (N = 6) of the present pilot trial. However, the proximal tibia proved to be a potential donor site for small quantities of BM. Future trials should clarify whether concentration of tibial BM aspirates could effect higher regenerative potency. (Source: Clinical Oral Implants Research)

Diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders: an ethical analysis of current practices
Summary
The defining characteristic of a profession – and especially a health‐care profession – is that the behaviour of its members is proscribed by a formal code of ethics. The main purpose of such codes is to guide practitioners' interactions with patients, assuring that patient interests are protected. In other words, the ethical code requires practitioners to place their patients' needs for proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment ahead of their own needs for income and advancement. The dental profession has a code of ethics that was developed by the American Dental Association many years ago; in most clinical...

Bite force measurements with hard and soft bite surfaces
Summary
Bite force has been measured by different methods and over a wide variety of designs. In several instruments, the fact that bite surface has been manufactured with stiff materials might interfere in obtaining reliable data, by a more prompt activation of inhibitory reflex mechanisms. The purpose of this study was to compare the maximum voluntary bite force measured by a digital occlusal force gauge (GM10 Nagano Keiki, Japan) between different opponent teeth, employing semi‐hard or soft bite surfaces. A sample of 34 young adults with complete natural dentition was studied. The original semi‐hard bite surface was...

Effective three‐dimensional evaluation analysis of upper airway form during oral appliance therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea
Summary
The oral appliance (OA) is considered to be an effective treatment modality for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Upper airway enlargement during OA therapy is critical, and lateral cephalometry has been used for the two‐dimensional evaluation of upper airway form during this therapy. However, this method cannot provide an accurate three‐dimensional (3D) view of upper airway form. To confirm the effects of OA on the upper airway in patients with OSAS, we performed CT in the presence and absence of OA in 15 Japanese patients (12 males, 3 females) who responded to OA therapy. CT in the presence and absence of OA wa...

Could sucking on babies’ pacifiers keep allergies from developing?
This study was too small to draw any conclusive facts about allergy and the sharing of microbes,” says Lee. “But I joke with families that a little dirt may be good for their kids, and this study certainly wouldn’t contradict that.”
Since the study’s publication, some dentists have noted that parents sharing oral bacteria with kids might lead to cavities. But Man Wai Ng, DDS, MPH, dentist in chief at Boston Children’s says it’s doubtful that occasional pacifier sharing would be overly damaging to young teeth.
“The reality is that saliva transfer is almost completely unavoidable, ...
