No significant difference in the levels of dental fluctuating asymmetry between hypoplastic and non-hypoplastic skeletal groups from the Joseon Dynasty (mid 15th–early 20th century), South Korea
Conclusion: As to the reason for the result of the present study, it was speculated that (1) different kinds and/or degrees of stressors may influence the occurrence of LEH and DFA, or (2) traditional measuring methods used for DFA research may not reflect true DFA levels. Based on this study, it is recommended that both LEH and DFA should be utilized and reported independently in future research on the environmental stress and nutritional status of human populations. Evaluation of oral tissue response and blood levels of mercury released from dental amalgam in rats
Conclusions: There is a positive correlation between blood mercury levels and oral tissue response in mothers, however, the negative impact of mercury on oral tissues of offspring rats was due to high mercury levels in their mothers’ blood during pregnancy. We would recommend that women should – as far as possible – postpone having dental amalgam filling placed or removed during pregnancy to avoid its harmful effect on the foetus. Further clinical studies are recommended to test our findings in man. (Source: Archives of Oral Biology)

Comparative analysis of in vitro periodontal characteristics of stem cells from apical papilla (SCAP) and periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs)
Conclusions: Our study provides the first evidence showing that SCAP express periodontal properties in vitro. SCAP not only showed PDL-related markers, but also displayed a higher proliferation rate and a greater mineralisation capacity than those of PDLSCs. It might help understand the development of tooth root and periodontium. Furthermore, SCAP could be a promising candidate for periodontal tissue engineering. (Source: Archives of Oral Biology)

Gene and protein localisation of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α converting enzyme in gingival tissues from periodontitis patients with drug-induced gingival overgrowth
Abstract: Objective: It is known that tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α converting enzyme (TACE) plays a crucial role in fibrotic inflammatory diseases, and is specifically inhibited by tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-3. Fibrotic drug-induced gingival overgrowth (GO) is often combined with periodontitis. However, neither TACE nor TIMP-3 has been thoroughly examined in periodontal tissues to date. The aim of the present study was to analyse mRNA expression of TACE and TIMP-3, and protein localisation of TACE in gingival tissues removed from drug-(calcium-channel blocker) induced GO and periodontitis. Methods: A to...

Simvastatin induces apoptosis and disruption of the actin cytoskeleton in human dental pulp cells and periodontal ligament fibroblasts
Abstract: Objective: Simvastatin, a competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase, and widely used as cholesterol-lowering agent, has been suggested for its beneficial effects on alveolar bone formation, regeneration of dental pulp tissue and periodontal ligament. High doses of simvastatin appear to induce apoptosis in several cell types, but little is known about its possible effect on tooth-associated cells. Therefore, the effects of simvastatin were studied on apoptosis and cell morphology of human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) and periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPLFs).Methods: HDPCs/HPLFs obta...

The role of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in the prevention and therapy of oral diseases
It is known that a balanced nutrition is an important factor for human health and should include a sufficient share of fruits and vegetables, especially with regard to their content of essential vitamins. One of them is vitamin C, which is found in certain fruits and vegetables in relatively high concentrations. Today, a vitamin C level of at least 0.9mg/dl in the blood plasma is ranked as an efficient prophylactic dose. If this level is maintained, the risk of getting cancer, atherosclerosis and inflammatory diseases, among them gum diseases, is decreased. The pro-oxidant activity of vitamin C on oral cancer is also curre...

Gene clustering analysis in human osteoporosis disease and modifications of the jawbone
Conclusions: The expansion of knowledge regarding the molecular basis causing osteoporotic traits has been brought about with the help of a de novo identification, based on the data mining of genes involved in osteoporosis and in modification of the jawbone. A comparison of the present data, in which no role was verified for 98 genes that had been previously supposed to have a role, with that of the literature, in which another 81 genes, as obtained from GWAS reviews and meta-analyses, appeared to be strongly associated with osteoporosis, probably attests to a lack of information on osteoporotic disease. A qualitative study of the dimensions of patients’ perceptions of facial disfigurement after head and neck cancer surgery
ABSTRACT
The study aim was to explore the underlying dimensions of patients’ perceptions and experiences of facial disfigurement following surgery for cancer treatment, using a qualitative approach based on individual in‐depth interviews. Data analysis and interpretation consisted of separating responses into phrases or statements with a single thematic aspect. Subsequently, a number of dimensions and categories were created using a deductive–inductive content analysis. Three main categories emerged: discovering of the cancer, coping with the disease and disfigurement, and reconstructing a new identity. The initial s...

Paired maxillary and smaller mandibular mouthguard for rugby player with malalignment
Abstract
A rugby player who had frequently experienced soft tissue injuries while playing rugby and wearing a conventional custom‐made mouthguard came to the hospital clinic. The patient had suffered traumatic soft tissue injuries such as lip lacerations and bite trauma. Severe crowding due to ectopic maxillary and mandibular canines was observed. In response to the patient's request for better protection, a set of maxillary and mandibular mouthguards was designed: one covering the entire maxillary dentition and the other the mandibular front teeth only. The mouthguards were to be worn simultaneously. In this paper, we d...
