WOW! Blog Tour: Trixies Trade
The following is a guest post by Ruth J. Hartman, Dental Hygienist and author of “My Life in Mental Chains,” “Must Love Cats” and most recently, “Pillow Talk“. If you are interested in guest posting for Dental Heroes, please sign up here. Trixie, my tooth fairy main character, makes handmade jewelry during the day since she can only steal teeth after dark. I decided it would be fun to give beaded jewelry a try. Being a hygienist, I already knew a lot about what my hero dentist did all day, but I needed to connect more with my heroine. Hair Cortisol as a Predictive Biomarker for Heart Attack [Highlight HEALTH]
This study has implications for research and for practice, as stress can be managed with lifestyle changes and psychotherapy. This study demonstrates a novel technique to quantify the accumulation of cortisol in hair over time and suggests that hair cortisol can be used as a biomarker for chronic stress. This study further suggests that cortisol levels are elevated prior to the clinical manifestation of coronary heart disease, supporting the theory that chronic stress is not heathy and may result in the increased risk for coronary artery disease. Your Doctor Might Be Making You Sicker

Yes, that’s right — now you don’t only have the sickies in the waiting room oozing virus-ridden goop out of every orifice to worry about, but your doctor could get you sick too. Great. Now we’re worried about our dentists sticking their germ-ridden hands in our mouths as well. via Yahoo! Health Post from: BlissTree Your Doctor Might Be Making You Sicker

How To Survive Medical School Part 3: Prioritise
This is quite a timely post, as I am on a very busy rotation and have not been writing much recently. Also, I am going to be keeping this brief, as I have to keep going with the study. If you cannot prioritise, you will not survive medical school. That may sound extreme, but it is very true. If you have gotten in, you are probably already pretty good at prioritising, but compared to other areas of study, medicine is so huge that you need to improve on this skill rapidly if you are to keep your head above water. There are so many things that you feel expected to know and to do, and you will never have time for them all, even...

Debate on Industry Research – Critic Admits to Mealy Mouthed Evidence
Critics Medical Researchers   Two groups—the "pharmapologists" and the “pharmascolds”—have long debated the proper role of the pharmaceutical industry, and what responsibility they have to the public. Solar-Powered Toothbrush: No Toothpaste Required?
Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan have developed a solar-powered toothbrush that doesn’t require toothpaste. At the base of the brush is a solar panel, which transmits electrons to the top of the toothbrush through a lead wire. These electrons react with acid in the mouth, breaking down plaque without the help of toothpaste. It’s an advancement of a model described 15 years ago using a titanium dioxide rod which released electrons when illuminated. The researchers are currently recruiting 120 teens to test the brush. The model is named Soladey-J3X and is manufactured by the Shiken company of Japan. ...

Donate your medical textbooks to Operation Medical Libraries
Developing countries have a need for more medical textbooks. Can you imagine going through medical school without a single book? How about going through medical school without any lectures, slides, or a computer? The reality is that many health care providers are learning to become doctors and nurses without having access to vital educational resources. That's exactly why the UCLA Medical Alumni Association started Operation Medical Libraries (OML) in 2007. In fact, Operation Medical Libraries was featured in a NY Times article titled, "Doctors Heed Call for Books for Afghanistan." OML exists to shrink the educational ...

Pain relief is often taken for granted in the Western world, but in about 150 countries the use of morphine is severely restricted. Tatum Anderson investigates how this has come about, and what steps are being taken to stop patients living and dying in extreme pain.Dozens of recycled plastic mineral water bottles are filled with brightly coloured solutions. The bottles are full of oral morphine, colour coded for different strengths—green for the weakest, then pink, and blue for the strongest. Every day, teams of nurses take them to paediatric and cancer wards and patients living at home near Kampala, Uganda. In a country ...

Alzheimer’s And Oral Hygiene
By Barbara Pursley Alzheimer's Reading Room Maintaining good oral hygiene was most important to Mom. Daily preventative care included proper brushing and flossing at least twice a day. I can remember her saying, “If you don’t take care of your teeth then you won’t feel like smiling.” In the early stages of Mom’s disease, brushing her teeth with an electric tooth brush was not that difficult, but I can’t count the number of times that she bit my fingers when trying to floss. And, I learned early on that I definitely couldn’t depend on the nursing home for this duty. Every year, I took Mom to the dentist...

When I was due for my regular cleaning, I remember asking the Onc about seeing the dentist. Her response was … we should hold off for now. OK … bad breath is not a priority. D talked to our dentist during his visit and the dentist said he can do just a shallow cleaning and there will be no problems. Eventually both Docs worked it out, I delayed chemo one week and had a cleaning at the ~18 month mark. Well, it’s a year later once again and D said, why don’t you get y...

The Texting Shrink
I like texting. It's a fast and efficient way to exchange information, and I'm a bit prone to yakking, so this allows for a no-nonsense exchange without all the gabbing about how the kids are doing or the latest on someone's ingrown toenails, or the usual assortment of small talk items. Running late, order my salad. Yes, Bobby can get a ride home with us. Or, if you're Roy: "do you have triple sec for the mango margaritas?"
