Editor’s Note: Timothy Jost, the author of the post below, analyzed the insurance and revenue provisions of the President’s Proposal for Health Care Reform in an earlier post.
Public debate concerning the pending congressional health reform legislation has largely focused on insurance reforms, which were discussed in my first post on the president’s latest reform proposal. But the health insurance reform provisions make up only one title and one-fifth of the 2,400-page Senate bill on which the final reform will undoubtedly be based, if reform happens at all. The remaining provisions of the legislation ...

Former vice president of Align Technology (the Invisalign company), Amir Abolfathi, began a company called Sonitus Medical to create SoundBite, a phenomenon that returns the gift of hearing to people who are deaf in one ear.
SoundBite has two parts – a discreet over-the-ear piece, and a wireless device that fits into the mouth so that sound can be transmitted through teeth. It’s removable, and no surgery is required.
Sound collected in the deaf ear is transmitted through teeth to the hearing ear. Because the oral device doesn’t cover the biting surface of teeth, SoundBite wearers can eat and drink normally while wear...

Researchers at Glyndŵr University in Wrexham, Wales turned a common microwave into a plasma generating equipment sterilizer. By placing a vacuum vessel into the microwave, they were able to generate O and O3 rich plasma that is highly oxidizing and disinfecting. The system costs less than £2000 to manufacture and is small and mobile compared to current commercial plasma disinfection devices.
From Glyndŵr University:
Dr Wright [Dr Andy Wright, Senior Research Scientist] said that tests have shown the technology to be just as effective as existing steam-based methods of sterilisation, if not more - but at a...

Recently I announced a quiz to get more information about a historical syringe that a couple of friends had bought for me. This quiz was far from easy since we had no information on the syringe whatsoever. Medical Museion’s guest researcher and former chief physician Sven Erik Hansen was the first to make a suggestion on our Danish blog — he thought it might had been be used to treat haemorrhoids.
Sven Erik’s was a qualified guess, but it seems like the area of expertise that we are dealing with here is rather odontology. Thomas put a query about the syringe on rete, the mailing list for c...

Yesterday I said I was going to the dentist (and no cavities). Something I really hate and would prefer to skip but with my medical history (insert blah, blah, blah here) I try to be proactive about medical stuff as opposed to the what if scenario. I don't mean that going to the dentist is going to prevent cancer or something but oral hygiene is relatively important. I posted this on Facebook (my cyber hangout) and said that I disliked the dentist but would prefer it to the gynecologist or oncologist essentially. I was surprised to find out the number of people I know who have skipped the dentist due to financial constrain...

When you think of improving your health and happiness, what do you think about? Is it diet? Is it money? Or is it even having that dream house with a nice car? We all have different dreams, but the thing that connects us all is the fact that we believe these dreams will make us happy.
Happiness is something that has been studied for a long time. It’s something that we cannot fully grasp. We may see happy people walking past us, but we never know why they’re so happy and what their secret is.
As the Buddhists say “the secret of happiness lies in the mind’s release of worldly ties”, but do we really need to do that...

This morning's news has two articles on breast cancer.1. There is an impending shortage of a necessary isotope which is used in 'procedures' to diagnose breast and other cancers. 2/3 of the world wide supply comes from one reactor which has been shut for repairs and will reopen in April. The balance comes from another reactor which is closing this month. There are talks to find another source in Poland but nothing is signed yet. A shortage means a return to older, less advanced tests. Clearly this demonstrates the need for market competition and multiple sources for specific items. Isotopes have half lives and decay which ...

Conclusion: Incorrect setting of the ISO values for the segmentation of the scan denture has been found to be a factor in the deformation of SLA-produced surgical guides, although more, at this time known but also less understood, issues appear to be involved. Only one manufacturer's product is discussed; further research is warranted to determine if the discrepancies are process or product based. It might be prudent to closely evaluate the volumetric congruence of SLA-produced surgical stents before their clinical use to prevent undesired clinical outcomes.

Lights out: A protein may switch off cancer cells
ANN ARBOR, Mich.—A protein acting as a switch to activate the cell death process may prove to be an effective targeted treatment for killing cancer cells.
University of Michigan researchers discovered that the protein called RIP plays a role in mediating both the life and death of squamous cell carcinoma cancer cells, said Yvonne Kapila, associate professor, Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the School of Dentistry.
This is key because cancer cells elude the normal cell death process. If that process could be activated artificially by a targeted introduct...

Many people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are not aware that the presence of significant inflammation anywhere in the body can raise their blood sugar. But this is a very important finding. In rare cases, people can lower their blood sugar significantly by eliminating the inflammation.Unfortunately, because high blood sugar weakens the immune system, diabetes can create a vicious circle where inflammation raises blood sugar which deactivates the immune system components that should fight the inflammation, allowing the inflammation to increase, and further raising blood sugar.A very common site for inflammation that can ha...

A Novel Resin to Treat Early Cavities

DMG America, a dental technology company out of Englewood, N.J., is selling a light cured infiltrant resin that is useful for treating early cavities. At the very early stage of tooth decay, before a formal, treatable cavity has developed, fluoride treatment is often used as prophylaxis. But after a certain level of tooth decay, fluoride will be of no use, yet drilling the tooth to treat the cavity is not merited either, since filling a cavity with this method destroys healthy tooth tissue, and it is uncertain whether the decay will continue to a point that requires treatment. Dentists at this stage usually wait to see how...

Today I am launching my reduce stress in my life campaign. I did mention it recently and have started a little bit but now I really need to focus on what is going on with me. I did a little google research (which isn't always the brightest thing to do because who knows the credibility of what is on the Internet) and found some reasonably intelligent reports showing that there are not clear links between stress and cancer but there are clear links showing that stress does nasty things to your body and makes you more susceptible to other ailments. Okay, so maybe stress wont give me more cancer but I would be happy to get rid...

Two members of the Health Sciences Libraries' staff spent Saturday morning (2/6/10) distributing reliable health information and giving out MedlinePlus pens, as well as flyers with resources for free/low cost health care, to about 90+ parents at the Give Kids a Smile annual event held at the UM School of Dentistry. While the participants were waiting for their dental check-ups, we also gave out colorful stickers to the children. Other volunteers in the waiting room were occupied with keeping the children entertained, while still others demonstrated (on Mr. Potato Head and various stuffed animals) the correct way to brush o...

Clean up those pesky hairs. Use a length of elastoplast to pick up the residue hairs after shaving/clipping for ECG, suturing, cannulation etc.
Bleeding tooth. If a patient presents with persistent bleeding post dental extraction (or knuckle extraction), get them to bite down on a moistened tea bag. The tannic acid in the tea will curb the bleeding.
If they present with a tooth that has been knocked out: First try to sit it back in the socket it came from. If that isn’t going to happen, put in in a urine jar filled with milk. And off to see a dentist ASAP.
Naso Gastric insertion. Patient getting distressed whilst you...

Thanks so much to Dr. Dean Brandon for being my guest on Doctor Anonymous Show 143. We had a great conversation about his early influences which guided him toward his career as a pediatric dentist. I had no idea that his parents were NASA scientists. We also talked about the training process behind becoming a pediatric dentist. (Why the picture of Steve Martin above from Little Shop of Horrors? Check out the opening song of Show 143 and you'll know why)His website is called "Pediatric Dentistry" and we talked about how his posts are a reflection of what he tells parents and patients all the time about certain dental condit...

Health care reform has been one of the major agendas of the new administration. Everyone has been wondering how exactly it is going to work and what it means for them – both personally and professionally. The dental community has specific concerns because dental care is essential to the overall health of every individual. Unfortunately, the general public does not always realize how oral health can literally be a life and death situation. Recent tragic reminders, such as the case where a Californian woman’s gingivitis resulted in the stillborn birth of her child or the 12-year-old boy in Maryland ...

First, let me set the scene. When you go to the Swedish Cancer Institute for radiation therapy, you park in a Bank of America parking lot. Swedish provides free parking in this lot to patients who are undergoing daily radiation, and this is a nice little benefit.Otherwise, I would have paid $6 a day on each of the 15 days I've gone in for treatment. That's $90. Then, you enter the cancer center, walk past the desk where other patients are waiting to see the radiation oncologists, and continue on down a hallway to the "Gowned Waiting Room."How do I know it's called the "Gowned Waiting ...
