Shekhar M Guna, Bokhari KJournal of Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry 2009 27(3):170-174Juvenile aggressive ossifying fibroma is an uncommon and controversial, benign but aggressive osteogenic neoplasm of the jaws commonly occurring in children and young adults. Complete removal of the tumor at the earliest possible stage is recommended owing to its high recurrence rate of 30-58%. Reported here is a case of recurrent juvenile aggressive ossifying fibroma of the maxilla in a 15-year-old male treated with enucleation and curettage. A 10-month follow-up showed no signs of recurrence.

The affected teeth are clinically hypoplastic and hypocalcified, presenting a ghost-like appearance radiographically. The aim of this work was to report a clinical case of a child with both primary and permanent dentition affected by RO. The conducted therapy was based on a conservative approach, which consisted of follow-up clinical evaluations of the anomalous teeth. However, t...

Aduri R, Reddy R E, Kiran KJournal of Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry 2009 27(3):179-183The discovery of foreign bodies in the teeth is a special situation, which is often diagnosed accidentally. Detailed case history, clinical and radiographic examinations are necessary to come to a conclusion about the nature, size, location of the foreign body and the difficulty involved in its retrieval. It is more common to find this situation in children as it is a well-known fact that children often tend to have the habit of placing foreign objects in the mouth. Sometimes the foreign objects get stuck in the r...

Summary Rehabilitation of eating and swallowing functions from the viewpoint of quality of life should attempt to restore not only the physical, but also sensory function. As the size and shape of the intra-oral bolus of food provides oral sensory information important for eating and swallowing, we investigated the stereognostic ability of the tongue in 269 young adults (mean age: 24·5 years) and 60 seniors (mean age: 80·5 years); all of whom had no eating or swallowing complaints. Assessment of the stereognostic ability involved identifying 20 differently shaped test pieces placed in the oral cavity. The young adults id...

Conclusion:
Although as a group, participants have much in common with practices at large, their substantial diversity offers important advantages, such as being able to evaluate how practice differences may affect treatment outcomes, while simultaneously offering generalizability to dentists at large. This should help foster knowledge transfer in both the research-to-practice and practice-to-research directions.

Summary Dental caries is one of the most important reasons for the failure of removable partial denture. The adhesion-associated genes of Streptococcus mutans, such as gtfBCD, ftf and gbpB, might play an important role in bacterial adhesion to denture base materials. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of denture base materials (heat-curing acrylic resins, cobalt-chromium alloy and ceramics served as control) on the formation of S. mutans biofilms and the mRNA expression of adhesion-associated genes. The viability of the bacteria in biofilms was determined by colony-forming units at 24 and 72 ...

We report on a 30-year-old woman affected with OMD with a 12-year follow-up. Focal dystonia involved an involuntary activity of the lateral pterygoid muscles causing forceful jaw displacement in the maximal protrusive position. These episodes initially occurred during jaw function and increased up to an open-lock with bilateral pre-auricular pain. Dystonic spasms were absent during sleep and were reduced temporarily by sensory tricks. Treatment with botulinum toxin type A (BTX) was performed during three different sessions over a 1-year period. Electromyographic-guided BTX injections into the lateral pterygoid muscles were...

Abstract [ndash] In cases of an immediate insertion and loading of implants after a traumatic loss of the patient's own dentition or due to an inevitable extraction of an anterior tooth, it is essential to provide the patient with an adequate provisional crown. A soft-tissue recession must be avoided, whether it is due to a compression of the peri-implant soft-tissue caused by an over-dimensioned restoration in the cervical collar of the provisional crown or to a too small dimensioned sulcus former. A simulation of the exact dimension of the lost tooth [ndash] especially on the cervical part of the new provisional restorat...

In this study, we evaluated propolis as an anti-resorptive agent. Calcitriol-stimulated mouse marrow cultures, which contain both osteoclasts and osteoblasts, were exposed to the ethanol extracts of propolis or vehicle control and stained for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-activity to identify osteoclasts. A significant, dose-dependent reduction in multinuclear TRAP+ cells was demonstrated, although the propolis treatment accommodated cell growth and survival (P < 0.05). Propolis also reduced the formation of actin rings in pure cultures of RAW 264.7 osteoclast-like cells, suggesting that it exerts direct actio...

This article reports the case history of a 7-year-old child diagnosed with WS. The major clinical features were generalized tooth wear and gingival enlargement, altered chronology and sequence of dental eruption, primary canine cusp-to-cusp relationship, ectopic dental eruption, and mildly arched palate. Multiple white spot lesions were also observed, possibly associated with poor oral hygiene, due to a fermentable carbohydrate-rich diet, and continuous use of sugar-containing medications. Dental care management of patients with special needs is discussed and the dental treatment for this child with WS is described.

Abstract: The human fungal pathogen Candida is able to form biofilms in almost all the medical devices in current use. Indeed, biofilm formation is a major virulence attribute of microorganisms and account for a majority of human infections. Therefore, understanding processes appertaining to biofilm development is an important prerequisite for devising new strategies to prevent or eradicate biofilm-related infections. In the present study we used an array of both conventional and novel analytical tools to obtain a comprehensive view of Candida biofilm development. Enumeration of colony forming units, colorimetric (XTT) ass...

Abstract: Smoking is a risk factor for development of periodontitis. Porphyromonas gingivalis is an important colonizer of the subgingival crevice and is a major pathogenic agent in the initiation and progression of severe forms of periodontal disease. However, the effect of major cigarette's derivatives on P. gingivalis is poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of nicotine and cotinine on bacterial colonisation to epithelial cells. KB cells monolayers and P. gingivalis ATCC 33277 were exposed to 0.1, 10 and 100μg/mL of nicotine and cotinine concentrations. The epithelial cells were in...

The objective of this study was to study the effect of a peptide corresponding to residues 1025–1044 of antigen I/II and a dentifrice containing peptide on the adherence of MS.Methods: The peptide was synthesized and included into dentifrice. Anti-adherence experiments of the peptide and a dentifrice containing it were processed in vitro and in vivo. Results: The results showed that the adherence of MS to hydroxyapatite was inhibited by synthetic antigen I/II peptide and also by a dentifrice containing the peptide in vitro. The numbers of MS in plaque from subjects treated with dentifrices containing the peptide for 1 mon...

In conclusion, the white bands of fluorotic rat enamel represent hypomineralized superficial areas and are not subsurface lesions. The detailed description of these lesions is important to understand dental fluorosis.
