Clinical, microbiological, and salivary biomarker profiles of dental implant patients with type 2 diabetes
ConclusionsThe study suggests that the clinical, microbiological, salivary biomarker, and psychosocial profiles of dental implant patients with type 2 diabetes who are under good metabolic control and regular maintenance care are very similar to those of non‐diabetic individuals. Future studies are warranted to validate the findings in longer‐term and larger clinical trials (ClinicalTrials.gov # NCT00933491). (Source: Clinical Oral Implants Research)

Knowledge and attitude of dental faculty members towards evidence‐based dentistry in Iran
ConclusionsThis study suggests that the level of actual knowledge of dental faculties about basic principles of EBD was moderate in Iran. However, faculties' overall interest and positive attitude towards learning EBD is encouraging. Therefore, it is highly recommended that degree/certificate continuing educational programmes be planned by the organising committees. (Source: European Journal of Dental Education)

It's worse than we thought!
The current AAO Consumer Awareness Program is targeting adults over the age of 30 years. It is hoped that this new initiative will make adult consumers more aware of the potential benefits of orthodontic treatment so that they will flock to our offices in increasing numbers. This will be wonderful. Or will it? Some of these adults might have underlying periodontal disease that could complicate the orthodontic treatment plan. Should orthodontists be concerned about the prevalence of adult periodontal disease in the United States? Unfortunately, researchers recently discovered that the prevalence of US adults affected by per...

Statistical treatment of the sample
With interest, we read the article entitled “How does orthodontic treatment affect young adults’ oral health-related quality of life?” by Palomares et al in the June 2012 issue of the AJO-DO. First, we would like to congratulate the authors on their work and for being the first in Brazil to investigate the effects of orthodontic treatment on the oral health-related quality of life of young adults who had completed treatment. However, we have 2 major concerns about this study. (Source: American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics)

Stimulating the discussion on saliva substitutes: a clinical perspective
This article discusses some of the most commonly available products used for the symptomatic relief and preventive management of xerostomia. Amongst the plethora of products available to the patient suffering from xerostomia, no single product or product range adequately reproduces the properties of natural saliva and therefore consideration of patients' concerns, needs and oral health state should be taken into account when formulating a home care regime. With Australia's ageing population and its heavier reliance on medications and treatments which may induce xerostomia, oral health professionals are likely to encounter ...

Long‐term tooth loss in periodontally compromised but treated patients according to the type of prosthodontic treatment. A retrospective study
Summary
If prosthodontic treatment is considered after periodontal therapy, the questions arise i) does prosthodontic treatment affect the treatment outcome of the dentition in general and ii) which type of prosthesis is related to best treatment outcome of abutment teeth? Our goal was to compare long‐term tooth loss after comprehensive periodontal therapy in patients with or without prosthodontic treatment. Ninety patients' charts with a total of 1937 teeth who had received comprehensive periodontal treatment 5–17 years ago by the same periodontist were retrospectively evaluated. Sixty‐five patients received fixed ...

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) percentile and skeletal and dental maturity in adolescent orthodontic patients. Methods: Orthodontic patients between 8 and 17 years of age were assessed with a retrospective chart review. Skeletal maturation was assessed by using the cervical vertebral method, dental age with the Demirjian assessment method, and weight status with the BMI percentile. Linear regression and logistic regression models were used to assess the effect of the BMI ...
