Alright, I'm planning out my last (5 months of) electives for fourth year, and I was wondering what you guys thought are essential/useful skills for a GMO to know (other than basic primary care, but I think I'm pretty strong on that front). My school was very hands off for 3rd year students, especially for surgery and OB, I'm not sure if that's important. Things I was considering:
Sports Medicine
Wilderness Medicine
Trauma Surgery/SICU
Emergency Medicine
Labor and Delivery
Dermatology
Anesthesiology (placing IVs, airway management, etc)
Electives in Spanish speaking areas
Other language skills?
Tropical Medicine/TB clini...

Hi there,
I am wondering if it is likely that my health insurance will cover the removal of my Montgomery's glands on my areolas. These are not normal Montgomery's glands. I only have a few, but when I was younger, I didn't know what they were so I scratched and picked at them. Now they are darker, with scar tissue underneath and the potential for infection.
If I were to get them removed, I would of course have to see a plastic surgeon. Is this a matter of convincing my Dermatologist to convince my insurance company or what? The way I see it, this is sort of like a mole removal and mole removal is definitely covered by i...

As a PGY-3, I guess it is time to start thinking about fellowships. Unfortunately, one of the weaknesses of my program is that guidance in that department is kind of lacking.
What is the process like in terms of applying?
What are people looking for from the applicants?
What is the outlook for different fellowships? (I am only familiar with the big three of pediatrics, dermatopathology, procedural) Are certain ones more popular/competitive than the others?

I apologize as this post is quite long but I am at my wit's end and willing to take any help I can get. I am looking for any opinions as to what you might think is wrong with me. I am a 29 year old female.
The medications I take are ones that I have been put on recently. They are Allegra, Vicodin, Folic Aid, B-Complex, Vitamin D, Daily Probiotic, Pepcid, and I am also on two different antibiotics right now, Clindamycin for the abscess I got three weeks ago above my teeth and behind my nose (This is the second course I have been on for this, I seem to be having a really hard time getting rid of it) and the other is Nitrof...

I have this weird-looking mole that has some of the characteristics I know of melanoma (it's black and grey, is elevated, popped up out of nowhere from what I remember, and when it itched and I scratched it on two separate instances, some of the black skin got peeled off at the first one and the mole bled at the second. But then again I have long fingernails). It's a 3-4 mm. Oval-shaped. I went to a relative who's a doctor (not a dermatologist though) to have it checked. Unfortunately he was in a bad mood at the time, fiddling with his laptop while I told him about the mole (about it itching, bleeding and some of the skin ...

When looking over their website, I noticed that they were also trying to take 2 people outside of the match for July 2011. Does anyone whats going on there? Is it a new program or something.

I'm on a gap applying to medical schools (undergraduated), I applied to University of Toronto and Mcgill to study life sciences (as a pre-med course) and got an offer from both of them. Also, I applied to study medicine in uk, and recieved an offer from peninsula medicine school (a PBL medicine school) and still waiting for a decision from Southampton university (integrated system medicine school). Considering my future plans that I want to become a surgeon in the future, and if not probably a dermatologist or an endocrinologist -hopefully- what choice should I make?? Please help!!

DS' pediatrician and cf doctor both brought it up a couple years ago, but weren't sure how to treat it or what it actually was, so I made the dermatologist appointment. Unfortunately the first appointment was with a PA, who didn't have a clue and the 2nd one was with a very young, inexperienced dermatologist who didn't have a clue and didn't even look.
It takes FOREVER to get into the derm clinic, so I need to make an appointment. I've joked that I'll just take DS to the medispa with me and get his and hers facials. He thinks it's cool when I put a clay mask on him or use a facial scrub.

Hi,
I'm not sure how unique my position is but from the experiences I've had in life I think it's fairly up there based on the people I've met through life.
To cut a long story short I'll try and stick to the point(s);
- I'm 23, I only met my father last year, he's a Dermatologist / General Practitioner who's coming up for retirement however I've known his field since I was old enough to talk and had always wanted to work in medicine from the age of < 5
- I had to drop out of school when I was 13 to find work here and there (odd jobs) and progressively since then have developed an extremely successful career...

So...
After hanging out here for a while, I've learned that Dermatology is a super-dooper competitive specialty, and I was wondering why. I, personally, have no interest in dermatology (peds and neuro sound cool to me, but that could probably change once I'm in med school), but I am trying to figure out why it is so competitive. Does anyone know?

Hi all. I have seen threads before with N.D.s and D.C.s referring to them as family physicians (and I have participated in those threads as well). Although I personally find many naturopaths and chiropractors to be great educators (and have many friends in these professions as well), it still makes me cringe a bit when I see them refer to themselves as general or family-practice physicians.
I was reading a local magazine today, and saw an ad for a med (dermatology) spa in my area, called Physician Skin Solutions. I saw the docs pictures at the bottom, with one labeled 'Dr. Shannon XXXXX, on-site full-time physician'. Fo...

Matching into Derm without research fellowship or PhD

Hi everyone,
I'm a prospective student at a top medical school strongly considering derm.
I would like to match into derm and begin my residency right after 4 years of medical school.
How realistic of a goal is it for a 4-year MD to match into derm?
How can I make myself a more attractive candidate against MD PhDs and those with research fellowships?
Obviously, gain as much research experience as possible (targetting for the number of publications), but any other tips or opinions? :)

In which specialty am I more likely to get more time off? Which is closer to dermatology in terms of lifestyle? From my own research it seems that neurologists get 6wks off at VA centers and comparable time off in private outpatient practice. Anesthesiologists supposedly get 10-12wks off but it is becoming increasingly difficult to get a good job. So is it possible that 10yrs from now you will not get a job unless you agree to never have a chance of making partner and getting those 10wk vacations? After all if you don't own the patients and there are plenty of CRNAs and with all the advances in technology/automatism it's p...

I cut my calf while shaving about 2 months ago. After removing the bandaid a few days later, I noticed a light-reddish bump that looks and feels like a hard mole. It is not painful, and has not changed colors, size, or shape since then. Any ideas on what this could be? I have made an appointment with a dermatologist, but cannot get in to see him for a few more weeks and I am concerned that this could be something serious since it just showed up on the spot that I cut. Thanks for any help

I plan to start medical school in August 2012. I'm keeping an open mind, but I'm 99% certain that I want to specialize in dermatology. I know it's incredibly difficult to match to a derm residency, so I wanted to get as much of a head start as possible. As far as choosing a med school, would I benefit from going somewhere that has a derm residency? I also know I want to get involved in research as soon as possible. Any suggestions/advice? Thanks!

Hello,Hypertrichosis relates to excessive growth of nonsexual hairs from the softer vellus type to rougher terminal hairs. In contrast hirsutism refers to thickening of sexual hairs like beard area.Hirsutism is seen in women as a part of hormonal disorders.
As to whether a person has hypertrichosis is based on racial, familial factors apart from age and location of the hair growth.Hereditary factors do have a role here.Growth of soft lanugo hairs by birth is the congenital type and is otherwise of no significance.Acquired types need to be investigated to rule out paraneoplastic markers.Other causes of acquired hypertrichosis...
