Humoral and cell‐mediated autoimmunity in lichen sclerosus
We read with great interest the paper of Edmonds et al. 1 who observed that men with penile lichen sclerosus (PLS) have significantly increased extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1) serum levels when compared to healthy controls (HC). Similar results were previously found in women with vulvar LS (VLS).2 Edmonds et al. 1 postulated that anti‐ECM1 antibodies are not the causative mechanism but present an epiphenomenon in LS. Nevertheless, there is evidence for humoral as well as cell‐mediated autoimmunopathogenic mechanisms driving LS.1‐5

Ichthyosis vulgaris ‐ the filaggrin mutation disease
Abstract Ichthyosis vulgaris is caused by loss‐of‐function mutations in the filaggrin gene (FLG) and characterized clinically by xerosis, scaling, keratosis pilaris, palmar and plantar hyperlinearity, and a strong association with atopic disorders. According to published studies presented in this review article, FLG mutations are observed in approximately 7.7% of Europeans and 3.0% of Asians, but appear to be infrequent in darker‐skinned populations. This clinical review article provides an overview of ichthyosis vulgaris, epidemiology, related disorders and pathomechanisms. Not only does ichthyosis vulgaris possess ...

Clinical and epidemiological comparison of patients affected by palmoplantar plaque psoriasis and palmoplantar pustulosis: a case‐series study
ConclusionsOur data suggest a close relationship between PPP and psoriasis. The existing data concerning epidemiology, clinical presentation, genetics, histopathology and pathogenesis do not permit a clear distinction between these two entities, which seem to coincide in many aspects. PPP appears to have a marked predilection among female smokers.

Digital compression of facial arteries facilitates cutaneous nasal surgery
Non‐melanoma skin cancers on the nose frequently present to dermatology for surgical excision. This anatomical area has an excellent vascular supply and, consequently, increased intra‐operative bleeding (Fig. 1 (a)). Pinching the nasal tip to control bleeding is commonly used, however this can be uncomfortable for the patient because the nasal septum may not be anaesthetised (Fig. 1 (b)).

Tacrolimus abrogates TGF‐β1‐induced type I collagen production in normal human fibroblasts through suppressing p38MAPK signalling pathway: implications on treatment of chronic atopic dermatitis lesions
ConclusionsThe present results demonstrated that tacrolimus significantly inhibited physiological functions of fibroblasts enhanced by TGF‐β1 in vitro. Clinically, we propose that topical tacrolimus may not only reduce AD recurrence but also ameliorate dermal fibrosis often seen in chronic AD lesions.

Imaging actinic keratosis by high‐definition optical coherence tomography. Histomorphologic correlation: a pilot study
Abstract With the continued development of non‐invasive therapies for actinic keratosis such as PDT and immune therapies, the non‐invasive diagnosis and monitoring become increasingly relevant. High‐definition optical coherence tomography is a high‐resolution imaging tool, with micrometre resolution in both transversal and axial directions, enable to visualize individual cells up to a depth of around 570 μm filling the imaging gap between conventional optical coherence tomography and reflectance confocal microscopy. We sought to determine the feasibility of detecting and grading of actinic keratosis by this techn...

Keratins and lipids in ethnic hair
Human hair has an important and undeniable relevance in society due to its important role in visual appearance and social communication. Hair is mainly composed of structural proteins, mainly keratin and keratin associated proteins, and lipids. Herein, we report a comprehensive study of the content and distribution of the lipids among ethnic hair, African, Asian and Caucasian hair. More interestingly, we also report the study of the interaction between those two main components of hair, specifically the influence of the hair internal lipids in the structure of the hair keratin. This was achieved by the use of a complete se...

Dermatan sulfate synergizes with heparin in murine sperm chromatin decondensation.
Abstract The mammalian sperm nucleus contains an unusually condensed chromatin, due to replacement of the majority of histones by protamines. However, soon after the spermatozoon penetrates the ooplasm at fertilization, decondensation of this densely packed chromatin must occur to allow formation of the male pronucleus and syngamy. Decondensation is accomplished by protamine disulfide bond reduction by oocyte glutathione and replacement of protamines by oocyte histones with the aid of an acceptor molecule. Previous results from our laboratory have demonstrated that heparan sulfate (HS) present in the ooplasm functi...

Prevention, recognition and treatment of dry skin conditions.
Abstract Dry skin is common and impacts on wound healing, the severity of other skin disorders, such as inflammatory dermatoses, and on the patient's quality of life. Dry skin may delay wound healing, especially in patients with venous leg ulcers and those with pressure ulcers. The aim of this review was to help clinicians recognise where dry skin may impact on patient management in general and on the patient's quality of life. The review addresses causes of dry skin and the impact dry skin can have on patients. The presentation of dry skin is discussed and a classification tool for dry skin is proposed. Prevention...

Comparative Study of Biological Activity of Four Botulinum Toxin Type A Preparations in Mice
ConclusionThe dose‐conversion ratio between onabotulinumtoxinA and abobotulinumtoxinA was determined to be 1:2.6; previous reports of 1:3 were considered too high. A dose‐conversion ratio between onabotulinumtoxinA and new botulinum toxin of 1:1 was deemed appropriate. OnabotulinumtoxinA and incobotulinumtoxinA demonstrated a dose‐conversion ratio of 1:1.07. The efficacy of incobotulinumtoxinA was slightly lower than that of onabotulinumtoxinA. These dose‐conversion ratios are applicable solely from an efficacy standpoint and not for safety. This study was conducted in mice, so it may not translate perfectly to human applications.

Measurement of stress–strain behaviour of human hair fibres using optical techniques
In this study, a more accurate ‘true’ stress–strain curve of human hair was determined by applying optical techniques to the images of the hair deformed under tension. This was achieved by applying digital image cross‐correlation (DIC) to 10× magnified images of hair fibres taken under increasing tension to estimate the strain increments. True strain was calculated by summation of the strain increments according to the theoretical definition of ‘true’ strain. The variation in diameter with the increase in longitudinal elongation was also measured from the 40× magnified images to estimate the Poisson's ratio a...

In vivo pharmacokinetics and in vitro antifungal activity of iodiconazole, a new triazole, determined by microdialysis sampling
In this study, the distribution of a new triazole drug, iodiconazole, in rat dermal interstitial fluid and blood was investigated by double-site microdialysis following dermal administration. It was demonstrated that well-calibrated microdialysis sampling in rats could be used to assess the percutaneous penetration kinetics of iodiconazole cream. Iodiconazole penetrated rapidly and cleared slowly from the dermis. The ratio of area under the concentration–time curve in dermis (AUCdermis) to that in blood (AUCblood) was close to 20, which meant that the free iodiconazole concentration had a higher distribution in the targe...

Prosthetic Conformer as a Pressure Device in the Prophylactic Management of Postsurgical Auricular Keloid Formation: A Clinical Report
Abstract Keloids form as a result of aberrations of physiologic wound healing and may arise following any insult to the deep dermis. By causing pain, pruritus, and contractures, keloids significantly affect the patient's quality of life, both physically and psychologically. Multiple studies have been conducted for decades and have led to a plethora of therapeutic strategies to prevent or attenuate keloid formation, of which no single treatment has proven to be widely effective. Also, there is a dearth of information in the prosthodontic literature regarding appropriate management of such cases, especially when located in c...

Immunization of Rabbits with Nematode Ascaris lumbricoides Antigens Induces Antibodies Cross-Reactive to House Dust Mite Dermatophagoides farinae Antigens.
Abstract There are controversial reports on the relationship between helminthic infection and allergic diseases. Although IgE cross-reactivity between nematode Ascaris antigens and house dust-mite allergens in allergic patients have been reported, whether Ascaris or the mite is the primary sensitizer remains unknown. Here we found that immunization of naïve animals with Ascaris lumbricoides (Al) antigens induced production of antibodies cross-reactive to mite antigens from Dermatophagoides farinae (Df). Sera from Bangladeshi children showed IgE reactivity to Ascaris and mite extracts. IgG from rabbits immunized wi...
