Response of human chondrocytes and mesenchymal stromal cells to a decellularized human dermis
Conclusions: The results obtained showed that in in vitro conditions HDM_derm behaves as a suitable scaffold for the growth of both well-differentiated chondrocytes and undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, thus ensuring a biocompatible and bioactive substrate. Further studies are mandatory to test the use of HDM_derm with tissue engineering to assess its therapeutic and functional effectiveness in cartilage regeneration.

Cheilitis glandularis: immunohistochemical expression of protein water channels (aquaporins) in minor labial salivary glands
Conclusion  Our findings suggest that the expression and arguably, function of some of the AQPs may be altered in CG; consequently, water flow mechanism abnormalities with possible alteration in salivary composition seem to occur. External factors (mainly UV rays) seem to play an important role in CG; nonetheless, our findings suggest that there might be some degree of alteration on water transportation.

One Goal, Different Strategies ‐ Molecular and Cellular Approaches for the Treatment of Inherited Skin Fragility Disorders
Abstract Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a heterogeneous group of inherited diseases characterized by the formation of blisters in the skin and mucosa. There is no cure or effective treatment for this potentially severe and fatal disease. Over the past few years, several reports have proposed different molecular strategies as new therapeutic options for the management of EB. From classical vector‐based gene therapy to cell‐based strategies such as systemic application of bone marrow stem cells or local application of fibroblasts, a broad range of molecular approaches have been explored. This array also includes novel met...

Photo protective effect of libanoridin isolated from Corydalis heterocarpa on UVB stressed human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells
In this study we have investigated the effect of libanoridin isolated from Corydalis heterocarpa against UVB induced damage in human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells and the molecular mechanism underlying those effects. Treatment with libanoridin inhibited the cell cytotoxicity and LDH induced by UVB exposure at 40 mJ/cm2. Additionally, expression levels of type IV collaganases (MMP‐2, MMP‐9) were decreased by libanoridin. Furthermore, MMP tissue inhibitors were enhanced followed by treatment with libanoridin. Moreover, UVB‐induced activation of phosphorylation of three MAPKs such as JNK, ERK, p38 and AP‐1 transcription ...

Repigmentation of Poliosis After Epithelial Grafting for Vitiligo
ConclusionRe‐coloring of poliosis with vitiligo is possible but was unexpected because of the difference in mechanism and signaling required between hair bulb melanization and the surface skin. One likely mechanism to explain this change is that melanocyte stem cells are stimulated and migrate to supply hair bulbs with new mature melanocytes. Epithelial grafting of vitiligo with poliosis in hairy areas should be a treatment of choice when white hair tufts cause cosmetic disfigurement.

Estimating the Number of Lifetime Follicular Units: A Survey and Comments of Experienced Hair Transplant Surgeons
ConclusionThere are a finite number of FUs containing permanent hairs in any patient. The results of this survey provide a guideline that should be helpful in avoiding inappropriately aggressive goals such as creating overly dense or overly anterior frontal and temporal hairlines without regard for a cautious evaluation of the limitations of likely long‐term donor/recipient area ratios. We present useful guideline numbers that can help physicians choose appropriate surgical goals.

Complementary methods for contact hypersensitivity (CHS) evaluation in mice.
Abstract Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is an experimental model of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) that can be studied in mice. For CHS responses, mice are immunized by painting with a reactive hapten, such as 1-fluoro-4,6-dinitrobenzene (DNFB), on the shaved abdominal and chest skin. Subsequently, the ears are challenged with diluted hapten, eliciting 'hypersensitive' ear-swelling reactions, which can be measured with a micrometer. In this manuscript we present complementary methods that can be used to evaluate CHS in mice that include: ear weight, vascular permeability, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, IFN-γ c...

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex with PLEC mutations: new phenotypes and new mutations.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results confirm that EBS-PA is linked to mutations in the distal exons 1-30 and 32 of PLEC. Long term survival is possible with skin improvement but delayed muscular dystrophy onset is probable. While EBS-MD is linked to PLEC mutations in all exons, in most cases usually one of the mutations affects exon 31. The precocity of muscular dystrophy seems to be linked to type/localization of the PLEC mutation(s) but no correlation with mucosal involvement has been found. Haplotype analysis in Western European patients with Mal de Meleda: founder effect for the W15R mutation in the SLURP1 gene.
Abstract Mal de Meleda, (MDM, OMIM #248300) is an autosomal recessive monogenic disorder defined by progressive transgredient hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles, hyperhidrosis, malodourous scent due to bacterial superinfection, and minor symptoms such as perioral erythema, mild ichthyosis, pseudo-ainhum and nail abnormalities. Mutations in the SLURP1 gene, encoding the Secreted Ly-6/uPar related protein-1, cause Mal de Meleda(1) . SLURP1 enhances the function of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor α7 (nAChRα7) in epidermal keratinocytes, thereby promoting differentiation of keratinocytes in the stratum granul...

Pulsed Dye Laser-resistant Port Wine Stains: Mechanisms of Resistance and Implications for Treatment.
Abstract Port wine stains (PWS) are among the most common congenital vascular malformations. Unlike capillary hemangiomas, these lesions do not involute spontaneously but rather become progressively more disfiguring as the patient ages. While benign in nature, the cosmetic deformity and attendant psychological and emotional distress prompt the majority of those afflicted to seek treatment. The pulsed dye laser (PDL) has long been considered the treatment of choice for these vascular lesions; however, very few patients achieve total clearance with PDL therapy and a significant number of lesions fail to respond at al...
