Interleukin‐13–producing CD8+ T cells mediate dermal fibrosis in patients with systemic sclerosis
ConclusionThese findings show that IL‐13–producing CD8+ T cells are directly involved in modulating dermal fibrosis in SSc. The demonstration that CD8+ T cells homing to the skin early in the course of SSc are associated with accumulation of IL‐13 is an important mechanistic contribution to the understanding of the pathogenesis of dermal fibrosis in SSc and may represent a potential target for therapeutic intervention.

Extract of Aneilema keisak inhibits transforming growth factor‐β‐dependent signalling by inducing Smad2 downregulation in keloid fibroblasts
Abstract
Keloids are characterised by the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM), especially overabundant collagen formation. In keloid fibroblasts (KFs), transforming growth factor (TGF)‐β‐dependent signalling is closely associated with a variety of keloid pathologic responses such as ECM production and fibroblast overgrowth. Thus, inhibition of TGF‐β signalling would be a potential therapeutic approach to prevent keloid scar formation. Thereby, we aimed to identify a novel TGF‐β signalling blocker among natural products using a simplified screening approach. We discovered that the extract of Anei...

Spontaneous occurrence of photoageing‐like phenotypes in the dorsal skin of old SAMP1 mice, an oxidative stress model
Abstract
Skin photoageing is a complex, multifactorial process and both intrinsic and extrinsic factors may contribute to its pathogenesis. The ultraviolet‐irradiated hairless mouse has been used as an animal model for photoageing, but this model mimics only the ‘extrinsic’ aspects. Here, we show that skin from old SAMP1 mice, a model for higher oxidative stress and senescence acceleration, exhibited histological and gene expression changes similar to those in human photoaged skin without ultraviolet irradiation. These changes include an increase in elastic fibre and glycosaminoglycan histologically, an upregulation ...

Non‐invasive assessment of tryptophan fluorescence and confocal microscopy provide information on skin barrier repair dynamics beyond TEWL
The objective of this study was to characterize alternative non‐invasive methods to evaluate the dynamic processes involved in the recovery of normal human SC after total removal. TEWL, tryptophan fluorescence and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) were used to determine skin barrier function, cell turnover and epidermal morphology over a period of 10 days after total removal of the SC by tape stripping. The results show a biphasic recovery of TEWL over time, which contrasted with a linear increase of 2.3 μm/day in SC thickness. Tryptophan assessment of cell turnover also demonstrated a biphasic pattern attaining a...

Residual genomic signature of atopic dermatitis despite clinical resolution with narrow-band UVB
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common inflammatory skin diseases and is characterized by barrier defects and altered immune activation. Narrow-band UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy has emerged as an effective treatment for patients with moderate-to-severe AD. We recently showed that resolution of clinical AD with NB-UVB treatment is associated with suppression of inflammatory pathways and reduction of epidermal hyperplasia. However, AD lesions tend to recur in the same locations after treatment, suggesting that residual cellular and molecular alterations might predispose to new lesions. Gene expression profiling of pso...

Pyoderma Gangrenosum With Wrist Joint Destruction: Case Report
Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare, noninfectious, neurotrophic dermatosis. We observed a case of PG mimicking cutaneous and osteoarticular infections that presented with a prolonged ulcer on the forearm, severe wrist pain, anemia, substantial local and systemic inflammation as evaluated by serum laboratory data, and carpal osteolysis. Although PG rarely damages joints, the ulcer extended to the joint and destroyed the osteochondral tissues. Advanced ulcerative colitis, which is a most common comorbidity of PG, proved to be an underlying disease. Antibiotic and surgical treatment did not heal the ulcer, which was successf...

The skin surface pH and its different influence on the development of acne lesion according to gender and age
ConclusionsThis is the first study to evaluate the correlations between pH, age, gender, and acne development in a large acne patients group using an objective, bioengineering method within the viewpoint of skin pH. We could expect that there are gender differences in the correlation between pH, age, and acne development. From this result, we could provide a clue to the treatment of acne, that maintaining the pH balance according to the difference of gender and age is an essential consideration.

Dermatology life quality index scores in children with vitiligo: comparison with atopic dermatitis and healthy control subjects
Abstract
Vitiligo and atopic dermatitis (AD) are two major cutaneous diseases that affect quality of life (QoL) by causing functional and psychosocial disorders. Our objective was to calculate Children’s Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI) scores in children with vitiligo and to compare these values with those in AD patients and healthy control subjects. The CDLQI was completed for 50 vitiligo and 50 AD patients presenting at the dermatology polyclinic, as well as for 50 age‐ and sex‐matched healthy controls. All subgroups in the vitiligo patient group had significantly higher total CDLQI scores than healthy contr...

Maximizing diagnostic outcomes of skin biopsy specimens
Abstract
Skin biopsy is a common dermatologic procedure that is typically required to assess cutaneous neoplasms and to evaluate indistinct skin eruptions for which a clinical differential diagnosis is considered. Although plenty of literature exists on the histopathologic features of different skin diseases, clues and methods that help maximize the diagnostic results and avoid common pitfalls in the processing of skin biopsies have received little attention. In cutaneous biopsy, interpretation is very important, as is the process of choosing the appropriate biopsy technique. As soon as the decision to perform a skin biops...

Human leukocyte antigens class I and class II in patients with pemphigus in southern Turkey
Conclusions The results suggest that DRB1*04, DRB1*14, DQB1*05, and DPB1*0401 class II HLAs and A*11 and CW*01 class I HLAs are associated with pemphigus in southern Turkey. Observed differences in LD patterns between patients and controls suggest that the coexistence of the respective alleles is strongly determinant of predisposition towards (DRB1*14/DQB1*05 and A*11/DQB1*05) or protection against (B*50/DQB1*02) the disease.

Neonatal skin care: a concise review
Abstract
Skin care practices play an important role in the health of well newborns and hospitalized neonates. Fortunately, for many aspects of neonatal skin care, there exist evidence‐ or consensus‐based recommendations to guide best practices. Based on our review of the recent medical literature, we include in this manuscript the current recommendations regarding neonatal skin cleansing and antisepsis; umbilical cord care; use of emollients; and prevention of diaper dermatitis. In addition, we review the recommended practices for preventing and treating pressure ulcers, wounds, and other skin injuries in hospitalized neonates.
